Ford's Baby Truck Goes Rugged! 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor Review

Ford's Baby Truck Goes Rugged! 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor Review

While most of us wait for an AWD hybrid version of the Maverick, Ford is now shipping the most rugged version of their popular small truck: the Maverick Tremor. In addition to skid plates and all-terrain (and all-weather rated) tires, the Tremor borrows the capable AWD system from the Bronco Sport Badlands. Originally designed for on-road duty in vehicles like the Focus RS, the twin-clutch rear axle effectively becomes a locking or limited slip differential whenever the truck wants. Coupled with a more aggressive center coupling lockup and the Maverick is nearly as capable as a truck twice the price. Looking to go further off the beaten path in an easy-to-park truck? Check out the Maverick, but good luck actually finding one on the lot. __: I went to my local dealer to order a 2022 Maverick Lariat Hybrid on 12-20-2021. I was turned away and told to go back home and put in an Order Reservation online. It was an utterly meaningless and pointless exercise! Putting in an Order Reservation was nothing more than a pacifier to make customers feel better, even though it wasn't actually going to do anything at all. Just before the order banks opened up for the 2023 MY, I contacted my dealer again and asked what ever happened to my Order Reservation for the 2022. I was told that it was just quietly deleted, along with everyone else's. He told me that he would call me the day that the 2023 MY orders opened up so I could get a real order into the system. I got the call on 09-17-2022 and put in the order the same day. Since then, I have received multiple emails from Ford (about every month or so) telling me how sorry they are that my order is still being delayed. My most recent conversation with the dealer was that it might start production by the end of March and be built by the end of April. If all goes well, then it should be delivered by the end of May. I guess time will tell.

The reason RWD vehicles usually turn tighter than similarly sized FWD and AWD vehicles is because the front CV axles are limited in how much they can articulate, so most steering setups for FWD vehicles are designed to not exceed those limits. You also see this when people lift their FWD and AWD cars where their CV axles die much quicker than with the stock ride height.
RWD Vehicles don't have CV axles up front so with proper suspension design you can get obscene steering angles like on the Triumph Spitfire.
The Maverick has a turning circle less than 1ft smaller than some current production F-150 models.

I waited 2 weeks short of a year for my Maverick Lariat hybrid. It can deliver over 40 mpg in the summer, and low 30 s highway if you re not doing 80+. A nice little truck, especially with copilot 360 with lane centering. Ford will be adding a 3rd shift at the plant that builds this plus the Bronco Sport, so this should permit a bunch more of the Ecoboost engine models to be built. For some reason they don t build as many hybrid models which sees a higher demand than they expected. If you like this size of truck, I think it s worth the wait, once the order books open up again this summer.

Ordered a hybrid Maverick in October 2021. It got scheduled and then canceled and turned into a rollover order. In the meantime I needed a vehicle so I tracked down a hybrid at a dealer 1, 500 miles away and bought that. Now my rollover hybrid is about to be built and will probably be delivered in late February. I don t know if I will keep it as I don t really need two Mavericks and my other one is an XLT so it is slightly nicer. If you want an XL hybrid with only one option (tow hitch) as a long term tester let me know- might be willing to sell it to you.

I have a hybrid. waited 8 months for it. (Recvd March 2022)
I recently got an EcoBoost, awd, fx4, 4ktow. that was a 10 month wait. (Recvd December 2022. Both trucks are XLT versions, each with a few low priced Alacarte options. No constraints for any options I ordered.
On just two tanks of gas so far in the EcoBoost, I'm getting 24. 2 average mpg. must be that final drive ratio of the tow pkg which helps to get worse mileage. almost as bad as the 23. 5 you've experienced on the Tremor.

I like the base Maverick. The off-road versions wouldn t be anywhere on my radar since I have no need for off-road use. I like that they gave it their torque-vectoring rear diff. I was prepared to call the Tremor nothing more than a tire and appearance package, but the rear diff makes it worthwhile for off-road use.
For me, the base Maverick Hybrid would be the best. It s very practical, very efficient and very inexpensive compared to other trucks.

It seems I am reminded that Ford can't build them fast enough, but for some reason I've seen like 14 of them in the last year. I live in Northern Illinois. This past summer I drove down to St. Louis, then to Nashville, then to Owensboro and Louisville and back to Illinois. I'm looking for them, but I just don't see them. Is Texas and California buying them up?

Waiting in vain for my 23 XL HYBRID. Yes I would like an AWD but not willing to settle for another runabout that only gets average mileage just getting me to work and running my kids around. The way many on the internet seem to think is that only less than half of us who ordered the XL are going to get one. I hope I m in that lucky half.

Cool truck. I've been a lifelong Ford driver, as was my entire family. But no more. Ford has poisoned the well for many of us. Low production and incredible price gouging have turned me off from ever buying a Ford product ever again. I love your reviews, you (and Ford) helped put me into my new Audi. Life goes on.

.. a great share! .. . I have a 2022 FX4 Mav. .. waited six months to get it, and it was well worth the wait. .. I live in the bush in rural Northwestern Alberta, Canada, and this little truck meets my every need so far. .. economical to operate, and a steal to buy. .. simply grateful for my current ride. ..

Very nice and informative video! I placed an order for a Tremor and it has been on the train and/or freight truck since December 29th. I hope it comes in soon! Your video made me more eager to get my own. Consumer Reports also had nice things to say about the Maverick. Thank you for doing this review.

I'm sorry but 8' is a standard bed. Building material are 8' long. Until the last 15 years or so that the short bed has become a thing form folks that really don't need a truck flooding the market. On the maverick I would buy one if the base motor came in awd.

I feel like this tremor package will be a dud. Think it s something like 5% of mavericks will have this option. But it s such a niche vehicle with a huge MPG hit vs the FX4. I bet these will be one of the most available on the lots after a few months of production

Is 6. 5 really the most common bed size? I think all half ton pickups with a crew cab utilize a 5. 5 bed. The 6. 5 bed is an option which I seldom see.
3/4 ton trucks have a 6. 5 bed minimum, but not half tons.
Is that correct?

As someone who drove both a '97 F150 and '03 Ranger, I was turned off Ford trucks when they brought back the F150 Heritage size/shape as the new Ranger and the Maverick to replace the old Ranger. and then charged 5x as much for them
