Good selection of finalists, and the R1S is a good choice for EV of the year. I took a look at Rivian's website and configured a dual motor R1S for max range. It was 85k with the default free paint color, and had 352 mile range. That is about 5k more expensive than a Tesla Model X LR and about the same range. The Rivian does have more towing ability, 7700 lb. IIRC. That is a nice advantage over the 5000 lb capability of the Model X. Overall though, the Model X looks like more car for the money, especially if you can take advantage of the 7, 500 US federal tax credit.

You nailed it! Rivian R1S is the benchmark for the EV industry. Rivian R1S ticks all the boxes: Boxy, ground clearance, head room, cargo capacity, rear hatch, thin vertical A, B, C and D pillars, and physical side view mirrors. Back to basics! Its not hard at all to getbthis right. Are there some less than desireable things about the Rivian R1S? Yes, glass roof, leather seats, and the split hatch to name a few, alomg with the price tag, but otherwise nothing else comes close to the Rivian R1S.

It s ridiculous that the American media, including you, keeps promoting cars hardly anyone needs. The fraction of Americans going off roading is likely single digits and almost every vehicle on the street is seating a single person, most
Americans would be better off with a smaller, more efficient EV that would also be better for the environment, as well as safer for other vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

While I like the R1S, the price is off-putting. Maybe a EV of the year, and an alternative approach? This year, the alternative would be more toward the every man price point. Is that what the Model Y discussion was intended to convey? Maybe another year the primary choice will be more affordable, and the alternative could then be the no compromise choice.

I don't believe Tesla (and GM) announced they will lose the tax credit come Jan 1 is accurate. According to Tesla's website, US federal tax credit is not available for the Model 3 RWD and LR, but is available for the Model 3 Performance, all Model Y's (RWD, LR, Performance) and the Model X LR. Check with the IRS to be sure.

A better Toyota Land Cruiser / Lexus lx without the bad mpg. R1S delivered and more. Effortless passing power, one pedal driving, towing off-road capabilities and commanding view makes it a great package. The only drawbacks are charging infrastructure for road-trips, and unknown reliability. Try one and you will agree.

The Rivian R1S is a good choice for EV of the Year. Personally, I like small vehicles. If the Kona EV were priced a little cheaper and if it could DC fast charge faster, I'd buy one. I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews of the upcoming Volvo EX30 later in the year.

It's a shame that during the EV transition we didn't take the opportunity to regulate out gross 1%er overcompensation barges that will never see more off-road than a mall parking lot with potholes (on its way to take up 2 spaces)

The R1S looks great and has excellent reviews. The practicality, usability and capabilities is definitely unique. The closest you can get is a Range Rover but it would be at least a year or two before a RR EV will show up.

Poor build quality on Rivian, windshields and headlight lenses crack easily. I've seen this in person and on YT. I don't dislike this vehicle by any means and would definitely choose it over a Y.

Consumer Reports just had the R1S as one of the worst cars they tested this year. Too expensive, difficult to drive with the aggressive regen braking, and very inefficient for an EV.

A base model Telluride beats the R1S in literally every metric except 0-60, which no one actually cares about anyway. The EV fad is o-v-e-r

Totally agree. We have the R1S and Y. Got in before the 3/1/22 price increases and a few words that sums it up - capable of everything.

Great another EV that 90% of people can't afford! Who even knows if Rivian will still be in business a few years from now!
