Steve Sutcliffe drives the HondaF1 RA107 at Silverstone. Part 3. For more Honda news and reviews visit Sander: I mean i am terribly sorry to say this but it is almost incomprehensive to us how difficult it is to drive these vehicles. Even at my numbed down sim racing i can tell that at highspeed corner if you position your throttle even a mill too low you will spin off despite having huge downforce because of the sensitive rear end departure rate that is caused by massive 405 section rear tyres and every move you make has to be ultimately precise and also very fas since when done wrong it spins like a feather and you can't drive at 80 percent of what the vehicle can do because then it won't create aerodynamical grip and you won't generate enough heat into brakes and tires. What Steve Sutcliffe did back in the day was mentally insane and no tv presenter apart from Tiff Needell and Steve have managed to keep up the speed and temperature that these vehicles require to actually drive constantly and even more so was Steves effort more incredible since Tiff Needell back in the day actually drove an f1 car. Steve was already in my mind one of the best auto testers alongside Chris Harris but now Steve is my new hero. To be fair Chris harris, a proffessional racing driver even back in the day also drove the f1 car and did a great job despite spinning of twise but when he drove the track was even worse and was covered with greasy half way melting ice particles. -CroswhiteK actually hammond and harris are normal presenters especially richard hammond who doesnt have any backround in racing. Steve sutcliffe was a racing driver before and he wasnt that bad at racing so u can compare sutcliffe with tiff needell who drove a f1 car before and tested a williams back in 2004 i think, or even jason plato who is a presenter but at the same time hes a racing driver.

Actually more than a second, given that Rossiter is already half a second up.
In reality Sutcliffe is probably 2 seconds behind. ALso factor that this is the short track at Silverstone, and actually its an average performance, from someone who drives fast cars for a living.
its not ACTUALLY that impressive, when you think about it properly.

-NateDawg80126 yes i agree but hamster was dealing with a lot more power from the v10 instead of a v8 and the traction control was really bad in the 2004 renault r25 even though alonso won the the world championship and the 2007 honda was now where near as special or as good as the renault. BRING THE V10'S BACK!

It's not really surprising considering that Sutcliffe is a race winner in various British series - he was a works driver for TVR, he also did two races in the BTCC in a Lexus, and he finished 9th in his first race.
Hammond is a presenter with a license, Sutcliffe is a racing driver turned presenter.

To be fair to Chris - he went out on Slicks, in a car not prepared by a real deal f1 team, and the track was Even colder than here.
id have thought in equal conditions Harris would have been fairly similar, not as good as Sutcliffe but there or there abouts.

reply

He had better conditions than Harris, this is his second time in F1, and looks like he had far more tries. Take in account that he has spooned it first time in perfect conditions, so I can't imagine how would he driven it for a first time in Chris's conditions.

this review doesn't take into account the following:
Rossiter did his laptime in the freezing cold, in the morning. In reality, I bet if Rossiter did his laptime in the same conditions as Sutcliffes best time, he'd have gone a second quicker.

reply

Very true but didn't Steve do his hotlaps on rain tires which would give him a disadvantage when the track started to dry up. I might be wrong but just and observation, regardless he was pretty good.
reply

I know he used to, he even got so far as to the BTCC in the last round in 2001 - he finished ninth in one of the races, I think. I don't know why he didn't get any further.
