It is, of course, a matter of oppinion. But for many of us, Porsche-purists, it is NOT a matter of shifting speed (-and yes, here PDK is superior, but it is a matter of the experience, working with the car, the art of changing correctly, hitting the sweetspot - the pure driving experience where YOUR ability as a driver matters, and is not served to you as perfect and quick gear changes.

wrong, there are 3 types of gearboxes. Manual, automatic, and automated manual. Of course in the automatic and the automated m you dont operate the clutch yourself, but in one you still decide when to shift gear and when not to. aka 50%manual 50%automatic which the name refers to. To simplify what I just explained: one is with stick, the other is with paddles behind the wheel, and third does not have anything for you to operate except the stick for D, R, N etc.

The difference, unlike your Camaro/Corvette analogy, is that the 911 has the worse engine layout. The top level sports and racing cars all have mid-engine, because it works. Walter Rohrl, the factory Porsche guru who demos all the new top cars to the press, was recently asked about the dynamics of the 911 vs Cayman, and he said he'd take the Cayman every time. And yes, I have no problem affording a 911 - I've had a six including a 993 Turbo and a 2010 GT3.

All I'm reading is blah blah blah about the manual and PDK. If u havnt driven it then dont say anything. I felt the same way about manual is the best and down with automatic. But once u drive it it's amazing. PDK shifts great. And PDK is the direction porsche is moving whether you like it or not manuals are becoming ancient history. Do yourself a favor. Drive it first then say something

you bought a Porsche, right? if that car was made by GM or Mazda, would you have bought it? probably not. you bought it because it's a Porsche. but Porsche is Porsche because of the 911, NOT because of a boxster or cayman. why didn't you buy a 911? does it drive worse? is it less refined, uglier, and less available options? or. was it the price? loaded & rhetorical question, btw.

There may be faster, quicker, sports cars, or some with better overall performance stats, but this car to me is just perfection in terms of balance and grace. try driving as fast as Sutcliffe is going on those wet, icy roads in an almost any sports car of comparable specs, and you'd be in the ditch. Hats off to Porsche!

And just for the fun, there are cars with a -D- that are neither automatic nor automated manual. For instance take a look at the Tesla roadster or model S. They have a single speed gearbox so it can obviously not be automatic nor manual, so your statement that all cars with -D- are automatics isn't completely true. :)

It's true, I am a manual bloke, but the heavy nature of modern so called sports cars and the torque curve lend themselves to Dual clutch transmissions. I have driven them all and still think that. that said, it's not a good thing. My left leg still needs exercise.

that's like asking GM to give you the Camaro with the Corvette engine, tranny, chassis, body, etc. they did - it's called the Corvette! Porsche did that too - it's called the 911! sheesh. so many people want a 911 but don't want to pay the price for one.

It's a great car, but imagine what Porsche could do with it if it didn't need to -protect- the 911? I say to hell with it - give us a new full tilt Cayman R with a 3. 8 and all the goodies, and support it in GT and club racing!
