Years ago a young dealer mechanic did a tuneup on my 02 s10 4. 3. He also fixed a coolant leak at the thermostat housing. Soon after I had funny noise and money light. I did have a code reader so it did say something about the cam. First trip back he thinks maybe got some antifreeze on the crank sensor. He clears the code and sends me off. Short time later same code. I confirmed that it was cam and research said the cam sensor was on distributor and a note that connector should be removed before removing cap and obviously reconnected after cap replaced. I went back and told him my story. He seemed skeptical but he reached down and lo and behold the connector was there and disconnected. He reconnected it and problem solved. I don't think it was a case of forgetting to reconnect. I don't think consciously disconnected it but rather knocked it off because he didn't know exactly what he was doing. 22 years later I wonder how he's doing.

Hey there Eric. Im a retired utility compny mechanic of 37 years at one company lol. You sir are taking the steps needed unfortunately needed this age, to FIX modern vehicles. Its the same with big trucks sadly. I sumwhat became the fixit man after many years as I would take the steps needed, and time, to find whay makes sense in all of it. I found over the years that many folks I worked with would read the codes, throw all the parts at it, company had money, and when that didn't work, get the fixit man on it. I sulute your diligence in troubleshooting. You are one of the few willing to take all the steps needed to find the money shot. By the way, you are underpaid.

Well now. This video was just what I was looking for. I have a 2011 Kia Sorento and it has electrical problem, Key on engine off it has 4. 96v, when I start it up it then has 2. 9v on the reference wire. it is sending codes for cam, crank, VVT solenoids, and throttle body. replaced cam sensors, crank sensor, VVT solenoids and also VVT sprockets. I taking it that it has a bad sensor some place in the system. but in any case you answered a question I had and that is what is the 5v refence at when the engine is running. well now I know it should be closed to 5v. Thanks Man.

Great video Mr O. Is great that you found the issue and also potentially the third issue as well. But, I cannot help but wonder. That other shop is going to get all the credit for it. That vehicles owner unless they were aware it was going to you because they couldnt find it, then they will never know who in fact fixed the issue and to them unless the other shop tells them, it will look like the other shop done all the work. Although if you wanted to be sneaky. you could always put a business card in the glovebox hehehee. Keep safe and well everyone: )

Maybe it's just me, my generation, or how I was raised, but if I were another shop, especially if I were starting out, and I had to send a car to someone like eric, I'd just let him fix what he found and send the customer there to pay directly. no middle man, not up charge. my goal would be to show my customers that, I might not know everything but i'm at least honest and want to keep working with them as I learn.
I'll also be interested to see if that HF tool is a good as say an autel. it's about the same price I paid for my MS906Pro.

Erick, I do like your work but 1 thing i dont like is when you do any brake work most of the time you have problems with Rusty bolts and you dont like to take the time to take the rust of the bolts if you would charge a few bucks to clean them up i would pay for you to do it, and i know you dont like to reply back to me im the Guy who sent you the Front back plates to you for a 2000 Toyota limited. thank you.

You had the intermittent code, trouble back probing, and the signal was really dirty looking on that scope. My first thought was to de-pin that wire from the connector to see if the wire is half broken at the pin crimp. Glad we got to see the resolution to this one.
Any reason you didn't check for any continuity between pins on the connector See if something was getting a short to ground intermittently.

Can't believe folks drive around with a car running that crappy and only get it fixed for inspection.
But then we don't have inspections and they drive worse here.
Throw those crappy probes out!
I have a hard time throwing away something possibly useful too, but you don't have 5 bucks in those Amazing probes and have already wasted diagnostic time with a bad one-- trash em!

One of the few times that I saw something that you overlooked at first. One in a thousand. Eric, you're making me feel sharp today.
I suspected a flaky wire on that sensor connector or at the ECU, but you figured it out soon enough. Great troubleshooting as usual.
What No lawnmower guy Maybe he's on vacation. Oh well, at least there's plenty of town drive by traffic to add ambience.

You gave an honest non biased description about the tool. Will it work for everyone Probably not.
But it does look like it'll work for a diy application. May work great on a service call or a road test also. HMMMM!
That was a tricky one with that intermittent connection, but persistence paid off!
Nice to see Mrs. O also.

COMMENT! Doesn’t it bother you Eric that you do all the diag work but don’t reap the rewards of seeing it through to the end and seeing it fixed I think it would kinda bug me a bit but I guess I’m OCD or something! Nice work though- I thought for sure the phaser had slipped on the end of the camshaft!

I never ran into voltage drop or current carrying capability issues till I started my current job as an airport gse tech (all the trucks, tractors, belt loaders and stuff around planes at the airport. Watching and learning from your videos has gotten me through some serious binds! Thanks for doing what you do Eric!

I think that Dr. O. needs to add a door to that back hallway to Josh's side of the shop, to cut back on the background noise, so that we can better hear his words of wisdom. Parts of this video were very noisy. Maybe a sliding barn door type door for style and space saving. Maybe Home Depot will sponsor it.

I'm guessing the original cam sensor wasn't bad either. That broken wire is just one example of why the parts cannon is a bad idea. Guess then diagnose to confirm before swapping out parts. Yes, I've seen jobs where perfectly good parts were swapped out for chinesium and made the real diagnosis harder.

Seeing that garbage on the 5V line, which then clears up could easily be dismissed as a fluke. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about that. You found the problem, and that's what is important. Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is what those guys in the white coats like to call it! You are very good at it.

I hope you take it as a great compliment that other shops bring you cars to diagnose circuit codes. They know what’s up. You have patience, experience and a great intuition for bad wires. I believe circuit diagnosis should be an Olympic sport and you might get the gold.

I had an issue like this on my wife's vehicle related to the crank sensor. After replacing the sensor as it was mega cheap, it ended up being.
The battery, the ign coil had a corroded terminal on one cylinder and I had some high resistance on one ground so I replaced it.

Well sitting here on Saturday night and catching up on SMA. Where I find Eric O. Hot hot on the trail of a intermittent wire connection. What else does he find but a vacuum leak. Like Sherlock Holmes he always finds the bad guys hidden in the woods. Great video content.

It's funny how many of these mechanics talk about having the right tool for the job, yet use cheap readers to see up close.
Help the local economy and go see an eye doctor and get the correct glasses for the job.
It really is pretty easy. Eye promise.

Kudos to the other repair shop for shipping to EO seems like they’re interested in fixing issues for their customers. Now I suggest they watch some SMA videos so they can be the man instead of sending it to the man EO! Excellent work Eric!
