Another excellent and helpful video, Eric. I hope that the customer takes your videos of the doing the repairs on the vehicle to the previous shop that resulted in all of those repairs by you to being needed in the first place. I certainly hope that they refund the customer every penny charged for their doing, let's call it substandard, work on the customer's vehicle. High school auto mechanics classes would do a much better job on the vehicle than that shop did. Even I could have done a better job than they did, and I am just a shade tree mechanic looking for a shade tree.
Now that you have spent some time with the ICON T10, is it good enough to compete with the Autel price basis I have the XTOOL D8, and I am satisfied with it so far. I work mostly on older vehicles that do not have a dozen or more computers on them, so I am not certain of what its full capabilities are on the rolling computer racks that are today's vehicles. I do like that the XTOOL D8 has 3 years of free updates right out of the box, and XTOOL constantly has new updates available for it. So far, from what I have seen with you working with the ICON T10, it appears to be a capable scan tool.

I can tell anyone who to go to if they need service in my town. My rule-of-thumb when considering a shop: If I see an advertisement on television or radio or the internet I do NOT go there. If you are good, you don't need to advertise; people will find you. I think you are right, you can't know what it's like to call someone for service. Of course, all members of your family are pillars of the community. If I needed a tow or had a semi I'd call your brother Doug. If I needed tires for farm implements, I would call your brother, Scott. If I needed to lose weight, I would call your sister Elizabeth for a gym membership. I wouldn't call you for anything because I have watched you for years and know the kind of work you do. JUST KIDDING! GREAT VIDEO!

When I'm looking for a shop I try to go by 'word of mouth' for recommendations. but that doesn't always work out! Case in point. I'd been taking my Honda Accord to Dormans (here in California) for tires and brake work for awhile and when the brakes needed to be renewed I went back. Dormans advertises 'tires, wheels and brakes'! Ok. everything seemed fine until I had to have some 'warranty' work done so I had to return to the dealership. During the suspension repair they called me to inspect a 'problem'. The previous brake job had RED LOCTITE put on all the threads for the caliper housing and the disc brake bolts! They had to drill out the bolts and found some good used units at the local salvage yard! Pictures were taken and shown to the manager at the Dormans. money was refunded but Dormans will never touch my car again.

I had a shop fix my 07 Tundra starter. They took the wheel off and just absolutely demolished my truck. The ruined the hub, axle, and wheel bearing. A squirrel got in my truck while it was there and ate a wire harnesswhich cost my insurance company $8000. When it was at Toyota getting the harness replaced, they noted all the damage done by the previous shop. I immediately messaged them and luckily, they fixed everything without any fighting. One of the worst parts, they knocked a wheel weight off and I kept taking it back bc of the wobble and nobody could figure out what was wrong with ituntil I did my brakes and found it was missing. The laziness and complacency at most shops is ridiculous. I wish I lived closer to SMA, it would be the only place I’d ever go. I’ve considered it before, only live a few hours away lol

If the customer is telling the truth, there is a moral question of what to do about the shop that performed such dangerous and potentially life-threatening work on this vehicle. It has been my experience after watching thousands of videos in various professions there is a built-in bias to protect their own - that is, to give those in their profession the benefit of the doubt despite all evidence to the contrary that it is undeserved. The shop that performed this work deserves to be blacklisted in the most obvious way, and while I'm certain Eric O. warned his customer off, his shrug of the shoulders at the end was uncharacteristic of his morality. The shop should have a formal complaint filed against it with these two videos demonstrating incompetence. Their license should be revoked.

The best local shop I ever had was back when I was still farming, there was this little run-down building with all the paint peeling off and no sign. They had all the cars and tractors they were working on just kinda parked wherever, and the lady at the desk was old, mean, and kept the lights real low in her office. I could go in there with my sad, rusty little Jetta that stalled out every time I stopped at a light, and they'd slap together whatever I asked for (I couldn't afford to fix the whole thing up right, but they'd slap on the bare necessities for me without blinking an eye- no judgement at all. No muss no fuss (except from the mean desk lady of course, and they'd always do it right. That was a good shop

Adding that kitchen to the office was a smart move. Took my chevy 2500 to a recommended shop and they charged 760 for a new front hub and bearing replacement. On top of that they torqued that wheel so high even Discount Tire couldn't hardly get the lug nuts off. They had to get a breaker bar extension. I just trade in vehicles now for new ones. Do I want to have a truck payment or do I want to spend a ton on maintenance that isn't done right. New is a lot less stressful.

I do most of the work on my vehicles but when I have to pay a shop to do the work I cant do I read the reviews drive by said shops and see how full the parking lot is and look how clean the shop is and stop in and talk to the counter person and look at how many employees they have. good shops mostly are clean and have nice equipment and many employees means they must be making money to keep shop in business

I'm intensely interested in why the previous work was done so poorly. Is the root problem that it's almost impossible to hire qualified auto techs, so shops turn to people with substance abuse problems or low problem solving skills that will work for below market wages If this is the case then the obvious (and painful) solution is to increase auto tech pay tremendously to attract high quality workers.

If I were the customer, I would advise the 'other shop' to fire the employee that worked on my car. That person could wind up killing someone. In the aircraft industry the 'sh! t' rolls all the way back to the mechanic who is suspected of causing the ahem 'air mishap' and if found at fault, not only would he/she lose their job and certification, but they could also be found liable and SUED!

Do you have thread files And they're not what you think. maybe They're not pointed their crosshatched. Do you use them after you chase a thread to get rid of the goobered up edges. And yes I am a machinist retired 35 years You're welcome. Just trying to make life go easier I learn from many people with knowledge. You know those old guys that are 70 years old. That still work.

I know why your shop is full and busy all the time. You have good judgment and ethics on your work. Common sense goes a long way. To bad most have none. I guess years of working on cars helped. It's sad other shops can't fix simple things that are glaring them in the face. I would pay good money if you were my mechanic. I would know it's done right. Great work Mr. O.

I look for old guys, but I did come across a young guy that jus like you. Worked in his Gramps shop and was a crackerjack mech. . Went there a lot even though I did a lot of my own stuff, brakes, mufflers stuff like that and they would advise me when it was time to trade up. He eventually went into computers and was very happy, and cleaner! LOL Shop still run by family.

When my car broke down on the road and I lived in an apartment (they didn't allow car maintenance) AAA recommended a repair shop and each time I was very satisfied with the work they did. Busy California freeway. very stressful place to break down. the AAA towing company took me to a shop that turned out to be A-OK. They didn't take advantage of me. What a relief.

A tell sign for sketchy shops. watch for excess mechanic turnover and ask how the mechanics are paid; flat rate or hourly rate. Without going into too deeply flat rate paid mechanics are under more pressure to get the work done faster. So look for a shop that uses an hourly rate to pay their mechanics, there is an old saying take time make nice.

Definitely grade school quality from the other shop. They really need to lower their labor rate if thats how they usually work on vehicles. Working on vehicles from the rust belt is sad. Sad because all goes sour in just a few years and they aren't fun to work on plus, a gamble in many cases due to unknowns along the way of a typical service procedure.

Great Video Mr. O! I tried reading reviews to choose a shop and it didn't help. Still got taken to the cleaners and my car left with the same problem it went in with. The guys at the parts store told me about a garage that does good work and they also specialize in Fords. I started going there and no complaints. Seems like they do good work.

Another example of competence by the Master! I did all of my own work for many years simply because I wanted it done right, now that I'm too old and infirm I'm also lost when it comes to finding folks who actually understand what they're doing. Stay away from the dealers, in over 50 years I've seen only a few that are actually competent.

I look for shops that do the right thing but must be able to identify a Saturday Mechanic. Why is my wheel still vibrating at high speeds after new bearings, and the mechanic keeps balencing the tire 10 times. Oh he moved the balencer and it was off so scratch the first balence. I have also had it road force balenced.
