Love the money shot btw. hp printers are the worst, poor manuals and documentations, practically non-existent diagnostics. I feel helpless often on them. Watching you fix this indicates that if a person has the tools and documentation, almost anything can be fixed. That's where I get frustrated with vehicles. I can't spend $1600 for the Icon scanner you used or get a subscription to service data. So a lot of times I need to hire out. I will always go to a private business rather than a dealership. Dealerships put too much pressure on the techs to diagnose quickly rather than troubleshoot. Plus there is the incentive to get as much money from the customer as possible. The really tough problems take time and customers don't realize that 2-3 hours of research and diagnostics is sometimes needed to fix a broken wire.

When I began my professional mechanical career it was in the US Navy Aviation branch, we had dedicated electricians and very well sealed electrics. Watching you work with OBS2 and a plethora of other tools is very enlightening. But as a airborne Crew chief I always had to think 1 step ahead to what do I do next to stay in the air and protect my crew. All I can say is WOW. Your customers are so lucky to have your real thought process on their side. And you don't have to keep unneeded inventory that would have been used in a failed repair. Bravo Eric O you have done it again.

I've seen when a shop makes an error like this, they don't tell the client; fix the wire and take the clients money.
I was a service writer and had more than one argument with the owner when this sort of thing happened. In one instance, the diagnosised $700 light switch (Mercedes) didn't fix the problem- the tech was in a panic. I ended up using the wiring diagram to trace the issue to a module in the trunk.
All that said, although I don't work in that industry any longer, I LOVE watching your stuff and have a huge respect for your process and shared experience! Thank you!

I just had a lincoln navigator come to the shop i work at in Huntington Beach California. its from Massachusetts. And it reminded me of you. Cuz holy shit the ammount of rust everywhere was scary. That truck was so sketchy to drive im sure the reason is in cali is cuz here you can register the car/truck with just the monitors passed. Theres no inspection unless you crashed the car and want to get a new rebuilt tittle. Or you have a modified car and were told to revert the car to stock. After doing so you need an inspection

In electronics repair, as in auto repair, one must be conclusive as to the fault or bad part. I have seen equipment that has had the parts cannon thrown at it and the problem is still there. Often the problem was made way worse by poor quality/ counterfeit parts. One learns quick on Sony that OEM transistors are the only ones that work, like using OEM parts in a vehicle. Fantastic diagnosis and cure for the problem. Now to ask: Did the dealer screw up the vin or was that from the broken wire confusing the system

Eric you solve problems with logic, visual inspection and logical deduction. Dealers follow diagnostic information put out by the engineers which often times is crap and that is why they always quote things like modules before doing a proper inspection and troubleshooting like you did. This is why you will always have customers for life and keep growing your business. The problem will eventually be too many customers and not enough time available unless you want to work 80 hours a week. Good job Mr. O!

One hour well worth it! Outstanding troubleshooting skills. You could have easily been in the IT tech industry. I have been troubleshooting tech for 30 years and your troubleshooting techniques are exactly how we diagnose problems. Alot of initial research and reading and thinking. In tech one code or error can cause a downhill spiral of other codes and errors. You cannot assume anything. I always told my techs to backup until it works and then move forward. Find the point of origin. Great job!

Am I just a geek in that I find it awesome that Eric O, talks my language when it comes to computer networking Calls out the OSI Model. He's done it more than once with other layers. Here he uses Physical Layer. I know I've heard him talk about Data Link, as well as Transport as well. There are 7 Layers in the OSI model; Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application.
I think he knows way more about this stuff than he wants to reveal. He is a superman!

. you are a natural educator. your delivery and logical approach are impeccable. have you ever thought about teaching. something to think about. a more formal arrangement. online or in person. you could make millions. things like how to get the most out of your scan tool. outlining a troubleshooting tree. customer relations. automotive business management. the list is endless.
. would be a lasting legacy maybe.
. thank you for all your efforts.

I was looking at the ICON T10 when I was in Harbor Freight yesterday, buying gloves. It looks like it may be the replacement for my ZurichPro. (hint hint lol) I'm currently fixing up fubar'd footage of a botched Cruise Control Diag. Using the ZurichPro to demonstrate circuit functionality.
The dealer would be $800 deep, and wrong, but wouldn't admit it, and would still charge the customer for it, regardless. It's a cutthroat world out there.

I doubt the dealer hardly ever has to eat the cost of an incorrectly diagnosed module. More likely is that the module gets installed, when it doesn't fix the problem the techie calls in his 'Eric' (miserable old sod who does things old school) who identifies & fixes the real problem. Customer never gets told that 'Eric' fixed the problem with a bit of wire and some heatshrink. So customer gets handed bill for $800 and everyone is happy.

I wonder how much the icon diagnosis tool costs. I was looking online for autel or launch but I'm not sure if I should buy it or what to buy. 500-1000 is quite a lot of a bit hobby car work but I'm a former car mechanic and never learned to diagnose a car properly like Eric does it. It was only changing parts and guessing. What a waste of time it was and I'm embarrassed to even say that I was working in shops like these.

Dealerships are something else. I have a 2013 Malibu that I noticed to need a tune up (original spark plugs at 150k km) so I asked the dealer to replace them and the SPECIALIST told me that they are life-long spark plugs they die with the enginewhat So I bought the plugs and changed them myself. (I just didn’t want to bother working on them when i took it to the dealer but the answer just made me do it)

Doubtful ford would have eatin the abs, they would have charged a thousand bucks for a module and diagnostic on finding a broken wire, probably would have thrown the restraint module at it also. It’s funny, you and Wes over at Watch Wes have the exact opposite advice; opinion Of how to use di-electric grease, and what it actually does and where it should be applied. Great video!
reply

After dealing with dealerships, they never just eat anything, even words. Given this job, they would replace the module and fix the broken wire after they knew the module did not fix the issue and printed up an 800 dollar bill, and handed it to the customer. Sad, but not many places would admit a mistake, and dealer do not ever admit anything unless they can't hide it.

This is just awesome the way you work is just bulletproof. Good job, this guy was right to have it double check by you! Do you think someone changed a module prior getting that communication problem or just to have a faulty connection in the signal wire could have corrupted the information in the module, reason why you had to reprogram it
reply

Forscan is free for all and works awesome with everything ford that ive used it on. everything including writing the as built coding. which havent seen another tool let you do. cuz you can brick a ford ecm quicker and easier than turning the key when messing with the as built data. put one wrong number in and boom shes as good as concrete.

Great job as always on the diag.
I’m a technician for a caterpillar dealer and cat calls separate small module to module can bus local and the larger bus with all the modules is global. I’m sure someone wiser than I can explain it better.
Thank you for your videos. They have definitely helped me in the heavy equipment field.

Great point about dielectric grease. Great for waterproofing/keeping moisture out of connections but it in no way, shape or form, enhances contacts. There are studies out that say different but if you look who's funding those studies, it's the manufacturers that sell dielectric grease and other products. Stabilant 22 is where it's at

I had one with the same issue with no communication with ABS and no speed meter, and I found a broken wire to the ABS module. and that fix the issue. trust me I tried to a update on PCM due lost communication to the ABS Module. And that didn't fix it. and that's when I went to the Wire diagram and found the broken wire.
