With so many post, I suspect you won't read this one. You are wrong about dielectric grease being used in connectors. Your are right that it is an insulator but as a grease is fails. It has almost no film strength and will actually improve the electrical connection, if there is still pressure on the connector pins. Years ago, using DC4, I looked at a gold on gold connection. I drilled a hole in the connector so I could do a 4 point measurement. On untouched gold on gold connection, I measured 10 to 15 milli-ohms during several connection insertions. I applied DC4 ( a high quality dielectric silicon grease. I put the connector together and the meter showed 0 milli-ohms, or at least below the range of that meter. Even 10 milli-ohms is good but 0 is even better. So why does it work at all. It is used in high voltage connectors as an insulation as well as to keep moisture out.
I have since used it for many connectors that had failures due to high current and over heating. As long as the connector pin has tension it will work fine. Remember, it has almost no film strength, which makes it a poor lubricant.
You might ask why the connection gets better. I was told by an engineer that it was because it blocks oxygen that like to form on any metal surface. The scrubbing action of the connect makes a clean metal to metal connection.
I've never used automotive silicon dielectric grease, I've always used DC4 that can be had from places like McMasterCarr.

Now I wish I had stocked up on the old style lead caffeinated solder! I was once able to repair a main board out of a flat screen TV that had bad solder joints by removing it and blasting it with a heat gun until it was almost too hot to touch. It reflowed the joint and worked great. However, the board wasn’t permanently attached to a huge chunk of plastic that is sure to melt into a puddle when heat is applied to it; like I am sure is the situation on all modern car instrument clusters. You can also purchase wire glue these days. It looks and works like super glue. I was able to repair a cheap string of battery power Christmas lights successfully with some of it. A forever repair Probably not but it might work for awhile. After all, they aren’t building forever cars these days, either! When you are keeping a beater alive, there is no end to the lengths you’ll got to just to save a dime and keep the wheels turnin’!

This one came in the nick of time. I now know of two places to send out a cluster for repair and I was about to put die-electric grease on my evap connection.
I believe Billy Joel said it best in his lyrics
Oh, she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out and she never gives in
She just changes her mind
She is frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel
But she can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me

What other purpose does dielectric grease have besides keeping your spark plug boot from getting stuck on the porcelain of your spark plug I've used it in place of silicone brake grease, and also used it on polyurethane suspension bushings. I've either had no answer on if the two greases are compatible, or told dielectric and silicone grease have a different chemical make-up. I can say that dielectric grease has worked fine on polyurethane bushings and on caliper pins. But still no answer, or no they're not compatible from someone commenting on my comment.

Clusters are a problem on the Ford Fusion, too. I had a 2007 Fusion that the security system disabled the vehicle from starting, not unlike this Escape here. It's always interesting when the part of the security system that’s integral to the cluster thinks the original owner and the original keys are trying to steal his own vehicle. I replaced and reprogrammed the cluster and the Fusion was happy again. The big question is, why do you need a security system on a vehicle that ultimately locks you out of it and keeps you from using it.

Thanks Eric, for comments on dielectric grease! Yes, use it for spark-plug wires, but on the insulating parts, not the conducting parts. For those who insist on using it on battery posts, first clean the post and clamp, torque to factory spec, and THEN put a little grease on the outside to keep out moisture and to attract dirt.
As in a million of your other videos, use de-oxidizer/contact cleaner for contacts. I like to spray both ends of connectors and then immediately plug/un-plug a couple of times to scrape oxidation off contact areas.

Had cluster issue on ford focus. Lots of light/gauges issues. Manipulating the 32 pin connector affected it. Removed cluster, under scope there were some cracked solder joints on the board of the 32 pin receptacle. Retouched all of them, that was 6 mos ago, so far no further probs.
My only other cluster repair was replacing a fuel gauge stepper motor (different vehicle, that worked out well also.
But I hope I don't have any more cluster issues on either of my vehicles, because I'm sure I'm due for the next one to kick my a.

Also make you you tell them not to use those little usb chargers that go in the cigarette lighters.
They put out a frequency that interferes with the TPMS and will set the light off, eventually leading to them not recognizing them anymore and requiring reprogramming or replacing.
My wife has a 2012 and that’s what happened to hers.
I out am aftermarket radio in it with wireless android/Apple car play and usb ports. She stopped using the little lighter thing and all the problems went away.

My wife who happens to be a lady and an MD with a patient who is a car guy in a big way. Comes in for treatment but declines treatment. These are for cancers too. He has his own wacky ideas. Doesn't do what she says, comes back in and complains about the treatment he went with by another provider that she told him not to do. Finally she tells him she isn't looking at any new spots until he treats the spots from the last visit the way she told him too. While it's always women, sometimes it's men too. :)

I wonder if tariffs are going to dry up the market for Canadian car parts. Damn VIN thinks my car is Canadian, and my American cluster was replaced with a Canadian cluster, with the wrong mileage. United Radio thought the actual miles were kilometers and divided by 1. 6 and reset the mileage about 7, 000 miles back. Even the car computer was reset, and I had the car except for the few hours it took to replace the cluster. Surely this will be an error on my CarFax report.

Yea we had a few of those on the Mazda Tributes go bad like that, which tracks because it’s just an Escape.
Just a heads up Eric, the steering locks on those things will wear and not fully turn the ignition switch to the start position when you turn the key. The lock assembly not the the lock cylinder. It will be similar symptoms to the IC failure from the customers perspective.

Intermittent problems w circuit boards are most often attributed to cold solder joints. It can take hours the first time to locate the bad solder joint(s) but oddly boards of the same batch will have the cold joints in the same spot(s) on every board. So when you fix the first one, the ones that come for repair after that are pure profit because you know right where to look.

I finally found something i disagree with you on. I do diesel mechanic work. They love to mount the ecm on the side of the engine block. Those plugs are prone for getting water in them and messing everything up. Thats is the exception to the rule. Packing those full of dielectric grease will keep out the water and save all kinds of issues. Other than that i agree.

Hey Eric I really appreciate all the excellent videos for all us ol DYI'ers! Just watched your Ford Fusion HVAC video. I just wrestled out a 2003 Ford Windstar Blend Door Actuater. You do an excellent job of showing the diagnosis thru to the repair. I reach for my multimeter a lot more because of you, and its probably saved me a few doallars. Thanks man!

Ohh man I just troubleshot a 2016 cadillac with a can network issue as well! Turned out that the tailgate module was taking over the low speed GMLAN and not allowing the car to start! When I measured the voltage on the network I had 6V! Keep up the good work Eric, I particularly enjoy watching troubleshooting videos after spending the day troubleshooting!

I know my comment has nothing to do with the video but I ran into an issue on a 2020 Grand Cherokee I'm replacing the transfer case and I can't get to drive lines off of it I don't know if you've done it can you slide it back or do I have to drop the exhaust and drop the whole driveline just to get the back drive line out to get the transfer case out

I've done a ton of lock control modules on those. Gears from the lock cylinder wears just a bit and won't turn the ign sw all the way. When they don't crank, bear down hard on the key but not hard enough to break it and if it starts that is the problem. Just putting that one out there.
I use dielectric grease on my worn shoulder rotator cuff.

I have this vehicle but the XLT trim. My son drives it, but I might just be keeping it forever. Fun little vehicle. I'm mad about the chipped valve that led to a defective head job and subsequent problems that I needed to fix myself. Including doing the infamous unkeyed crankshaft pulley. But now I know I can fix almost everything on it myself.

The other issue is a pin fitment issue in the plug on the ECM/PCM on the firewall. Moms 08 Mariner had the same issue and the cluster was replaced and produced the same symptoms. It took IDS from Ford (now FDRS) to figure it out. One poor fitting pin was the issue. Figured it out and haven’t had a problem since

I hate these models dyeing that you cant always get replacements for. The GEM in my ranger is dyeing, I cant relearn my TMPS and the DLR's will randomly come on when key off. I need to get around to sending it out for repair. Ford stopped making them so I cant replace it with a new unit, just get it repaired
