So, if the owner wanted to repair this, obviously a new head gasket is in order. Would you do both I also assume you'd want to send the head out to a machine shop and check for warpage and maybe have it machined if it's more economical than a new or used one. But again, would you do both heads Would you recommend a new/used engine Or just tell the customer run 'er till she blows up and send 'er to Wilbert's Obviously cost will be an issue for any potential repair. Curious as to what your preferred route would be here.
Very cool with the borescope showing the coolant dripping into the cylinders. Woudl you check the other bank or were there no misfire codes from there

I’ve had two Hondas with the 3. 5 V6 engines. When I had random misfires I learned that those engines require that you set the lash on the valves every 110k miles.
I didn’t have the tools to do a proper diagnosis but I was over 200k miles and it had never been done. Set the lash on the valves and the misfires went away.
How often do you recommend your customers have this service completed If you ever do, please make a video, there aren’t many great videos of this service online. Love watching your videos!

I joke and interviews that I'm the head gasket King, if the coolant has ever had to be filled at all in any way and issue has occurred a very bad one, it's hard to call them early for most people they want to think no it's the coil no it's only upset when it gets really hot at a stoplight it can't be the head.
Eric O figured it out, but it ain't no easy diag most mechanics with start by replacing the damn spark plugs and coils, but any kind of misfire and my hair sticks up like a wild kitty

I bought a Mr wiggles a few months back, it’s the second depstech borescope I’ve owned and I’ve gotta say they’re absolutely fantastic for the price. I had a scope that I bought from Matco for my Max 4 and the picture quality was absolute garbage, not even worth its price in plastic. If you want to get a quality scope off the tool truck you’re talking at least 1000 bucks, that’s insane when you can get a Mr wiggles for 150 lol

Before watching this video I'm curious, because the symptom is the same as what my 91 Toyota 3VZE had. It turned out to be the head gasket was leaking about a teaspoon of coolant into a cylinder, as the engine cooled down. When I pulled the spark plug, looking for the misfire, the threads came with it, due to corrosion. I fixed the stripped threads after watching a SMA video and replaced the head gasket.

For whatever its worth, back in the day before snazzy borescopes were available to every joe blow mechanic. This problem would throw tiny clues, such as water will eventually sink to the bottom of the oil pan and by cracking slightly the oil drain plug, water droplet's will be the first to seep out. Get enough water in the oil it will turn into a grey colored milk shake.

My '07 Honda did the same. When I pulled the heads, the rear bank middle piston was really clean. Ran for another 100, 000 miles after.
317, 000 and consuming 4 quarts of oil a month when I retired it.
I noticed it went from the scrap yard to the fire department, I guess they needed a training vehicle. It was all cut up last time I saw it.

I saw your shirt Eric and I just wanted to let you know that Amsoil makes a much, much superior version of fluid film than Fluid Film does! To each his own, but I only use the much better quality stuff. Take care and I enjoy all of your videos.

I guess there is a risk of hydro lock the engine. If you drive and then stop the engine there will be still pressure in the cooling system and if this leaking is getting worse more and more coolant can leak into the cylinder. It should be repaired immediately or a way more expensive damage will be the result

Nice work as always! If a moment comes up. I'm also in the PRNY (upstate) I sent an email about an inspection question for the emissions. I know you likely get slammed with emails, just had a question about a trucks calibration code for the inspection. (2011 silverado)
Have a super day!

Rare for these to blow headgasket bet car overheated 1st from leaking radiator which is very common. Hey we now have Wilberts down state in Dutchess county they just bought the Honda Acura salvage yard we used for years just put a engine in a crv and had a wilberts tag
reply

I bet that engine got overheated at sometime and if you pulled the other bank of plugs there will be some seepage too.
Yeah, the old butt-o-scopes are cool, I use them on gearboxes to see problems before teardowns and rebuilds.
And, please remember to wipe when done.

I have a 2004 Audi A4 3. 0 V6 that seeps coolant at the seem between the iron sleeve and aluminum block near the top of the cylinder. Originally, thought it might be the head gasket and replaced it to no avail. Got a new Depstech, pressurized it like Eric and found the drip.
reply

Hey Eric, just tell the guy to loosen his radiator cap she'll run fine after that! Keep the radiator pressure down compression will keep the coolant out of those front cylinders! Shade tree for sure but that unit is old enough to vote. How long before it rusts in half

Time to try the mechanic in a can before going the expensive route. The other consideration is the outrageous replacement cost of a new vehicle vs. new engine or junk yard engine. If the salt hasn't devoured it then I'd lean toward fixing it one way or another.

Well, Eric O. It’s time to seriously consider wearing progressives so you’ll be able to see the small print. I finally had to a few years ago. It happens, my friend.
You’ll notice how clear everything will be. The dashboard on your vehicle will be amazing!

Thanks, very useful Endoscope.
I have a home one, used it a few times to check for leaks(nothing else) under my floorboards, drilled a small hole and found the leak and only pulled the one floorboard, how did car technicians manage before these tools.

reply

TLDR its an engine issue, just started watching the video
I remember watching a video on the car wizard last night about a Toyota not starting when cold but runs when warm. and it ended up being less than 100 psi compression on all four cylinders

Another awesome video. I had never seen a motor cry with so much steam and water. I was already warming up the popcorn for this movie. Glad the customer can take on such engine job. That camera sure looks very handy to have.
