Old cars are old for a reason and unless they are a treasured classic or collector's item, good enough is usually good enough to get them moving back down the road, If you know what I'm saying. Jpol Ps. I would have skipped the call to All and gone with your gut feeling. Your a damn good mechanic if you'd only believe in your abilities and convince yourself of that. That was my problem in modifying things at first and it took many years of doing it for me to realize that when I come up with an idea now, the manufactures could use it for a permanent fix for the problem. That's one of the many skills that makes up the being of a real mechanic, versus just a diagnostic genius or a master wrench man. It's just to bad at that point they don't issue us a mechanical engineering degree to paper the wall with besides our license and certs.

Why didn't you replace the accumulator/receiver dryer? That's mandatory when the system has been open that long. That cap over the hoses doesn't do squat. Once those lines are exposed to atmosphere, that acc is toast, the desiccant wasted. Plus, this is an old system. Now the system has a negligible ability to remove moisture from being circulated. As for the orifice tube, if you can remove and clean it and it doesn't appear damaged, it can be reused. Missed the mark on this one.

Just found your site while looking at videos for a mode door repair on a 2006 Dodge 3500. Great site. Ive got another issue with this same truck in that the A/C compressor will not engage. It engages when I jump it straight to the battery and has 11. 6 volts at the positive wire at the compressor when unplugged but as soon as I plug it in voltage goes to zero. Do you have a video on a problem like this?

It seems like a lot of armchair mechanics know how to do your job. Practical world experience has to be used in real life, if accumalator breaks of, 7 hrs and expense added to the hob to put air in an old truck, I think you made the right call. I am amazed at your competence in what you do. Dont let the armchair mechanics get to you. You do a great job. very impressive. thanks for the vidios

It's been found that the OEM metal-to-metal connection of line head
to compressor would strain the one bolt clamp.
Incorporating a Dado washer on each line gives the connection
more integrity under vibration and thermal cycles.
The O-rings perform all of the sealing function of the connection.

Definately a washer. Washer in this case is used as a spacer so it mounts flush. The o rings do the sealing. The o-rings themselves do the sealing. Try a tube of O ring grease in a tube. Some oils will eat away at the o ring or swell them too much and distort them.

Several years back Chrysler switched to a flat washer. They continued to manufacturer the hose with the indent for the oring. We were not prive to the reason for the change. But it did eliminate the issue of tore orings during assembly.

Eric O. I love your video but can you give me any pointers on a 1998 Dodge Dakota V6 3. 9 liter. I need help working on my emergency brake. I cannot find anything to help me. any pointers or tips would be wonderful.

Question, would it not be possible to shave/file the bottom of the tube a little, so it would allow it to drop lower into the compressor bore? If you can't raise the bridge, lower the water.

I just did a 2003 Ram and it comes from factory with both flat sealing washer and o-ring. Both had orange colored rubber material like the broken o-ring you showed on camera.
