Subaru EJ25D 2. 5 DOHC Timing Belt & Water Pump - Part II
video description
Also wanted to know any way to tell camshaft positioning like the other side of engine looking at the plugs that go on the other side of this engine. I did mark with white valve ink marker the old belt before taking it off. I know Eric says that the piston is set in the middle or to that effect when its timed. Guess I best try and start it but was concerned that I may have botched it up. First time tackling this type of repair. My friend is helping me also.
We filled up with antifreeze the top passengers coolant hose and it fills in the coolant super fast. I did this before and my car ran fine. Much much faster way in replenishing the coolant but again no expert by any stretch of the imagination.
Any insight on my predicament regarding the intake wheel pulley on the drivers side needing readjustment? I'm going to count 28 teeth over on the belt too. Wish I seen this video before tackling this project.
Great freaking videos Eric!

I bought a 97 Subaru from a guy last year not running. I took a chance and paid 1000 dollars for it. He told me it was his daily work car and one morning it would not start. He said he had a mechanic looked at it in his driveway and said his computer went bad and that is all that is wrong with it. I got it towed to my house and started working with it, anyhow I took the timing belt apart, it has a brand new belt, new water pump, bolts were cleaned then I found out that they did put a new timing belt and water pump but when they put it back together the idiots forgot to place the little keyway when they install the crankshaft pulley. lol so when you start the car it would not crank because of it. Needless to say at the end I got the car running and drove it for two years and sold it and made more than what I payed for. What a great deal!
That was a true story. But not all the time you ran into that situation 90 percent of the time you ended up buying a melon. So my suggestion is don't buy a car especially when the car does not run.

Awesome video, thank you so much for the help. Question. You mentioned the symptoms of a car that has the timing screwed up when set up correctly. I know someone that wants to sell their Subaru and it has the symptom you mentioned (runs fine until it warms up. Recent timing done as well (and redone apparently. How likely would you say that is the culprit, and what kind of damage can occur from running it that way? Thanks again for giving me the confidence to break open my Outback.

I had the SOHC engine (2. 2) and honestly working on a Subaru in the home garage is way easier than my Toyotas or Ford. Especially since the alternator is on top. Spark plugs are not terrible even though you think they would be on the boxer engine. Will be looking at your head gasket videos as well: -)
Excellent video and walk through on the DOHC version, a lot of owners have trouble with lining everything up.

Love that if you want to full gorilla.
I am working on my 2006 Subie and this video was super helpful Eric,
I have to say it, even if i didn't have a Subie with similar issues, i would rather watch one of SMA videos for half an hour than watch any dumb BS Sit Com or reality TV show, SMA is the Ultimate in Reality TV viewing!
Keep it up Eric, your the best.

Hey Eric, been a long time watcher. Great vids as always. I doing a suby for the first time. You skipped the torquing of the crank bolt. i don't have a special suby pulley holding tool and Im wondering whether you use a special tool or you have some other way of holding the engine still on an auto to torque the bolt? appreciate your advice,

What is your take on the quality of original Subaru water pumps? I recently had my timing belt and components replaced on my 2010 Legacy 2. 5I, and the mechanic said unless they start weeping, he won't pull them until the second TB replacement. He said they're really reliable.
Just curious as to what your thoughts are. Thanks!

The great thing about owning a Japanese car is the parts. So many Japanese companies making good quaility part in Japan or the USA. Lot's of them are OEM.
We wouldn't dream of buying a car with a Chinese engine but we can end up with an engine full of Chinese parts. Not for me thanks. Pay the bit extra and drive without worry.

One little thing. Sometimes the idler pulley has a large center hole that is fitted with a large cupped washer. I don't know if it is intentional, but it sure is handy to loosen that bolt a bit so the pulley can go off center and give you another half inch of slop in the belt so you can finesse the timings.

I bought a GATES kit online for my Subaru Outback within one week the water pump failed. I replaced it Now the tensioner froze and snapped off the block breaking thru the timing cover. Its an interference motor so I dont know as of yet its blown or not. DONT BUY GATES ONLY THE BELT IS MADE IN USA
