Chevy Equinox: Battery Draw- Fixed With Service Info calholli: If it was my car. I likely would have assumed it needed a new HVAC unit since it has that draw. Instead of buying one, I would have pulled that fuse, ran the two wires to a super cheap relay (with an inline fuse now) and wired that to switched power. So when I turned the key off -- it would drop that relay, which would basically pull the fuse to my HVAC unit. No more draw-- and I didn't have to buy an expensive module to make it work. I'm not afraid of hacking things this way on my own cars, if they are old enough. lol

My first experience with parasitic electrical draw was working for an RV dealership in the late 1980's as a warranty manager.
We had a slew of AC Delco engine batteries that would go dead. Rather than check the batteries out, I was told to warranty them. That all stopped when the supplier checked the batteries, charged them up, load tested them and said there was nothing wrong with the batteries.
Told the mechanics that something was drawing down the batteries. They came back and said that there was a small miliamp draw but nothing that would make a battery go dead.
We fould out later that these new fangled dash radios that had digital clock displays created a miliamp draw and it was just enough over the period of a month of not starting the new motor homes, the battery would die. See, before this all the dash radios were analog so they didn't have a clock which drew down the battery!
The solution was simple enough. Our lot manager made sure to start and move all the motor homes on the lot on a regular basis.

That module might have gone into a 'standby/suspend' mode as a result of its last run settings. When the fuse was pulled, it cleared any 'suspended' operations from the running program.
Had the HVAC unit been run again, it might once again have retained a 'suspended' operation mode waiting to resume its last settings. Under normal regular use, that 70ma spike draw would be superfluous to battery drain. Extended periods would have found it problematic, and thus a software update that defaulted to completely clearing the software running instructions. when the HVAC is not in use.
This is directly analogous to a personal computer in 'standby' or 'suspend' mode. There will be a continuous trickle required of the battery that will eventually drain it.

What do you know another you Tuber I would like this You Tuber to know that Eric is doing his best to give you of his time, talent, and undivided attention by making these videos. His moto is If I can do it you can do it. That is a challenge he has put forth to all of us. Try to put in as much thought, time and effort into doing what he does and you to can be as confident as he is in diagnosing and fixing automotive problems. Put that same thought, time and effort into life and you will be as happy as he is too.

My thought. Maybe that service letter was correct and you resolved it. Maybe when remote hvac module was powering on the heat control and that temp actuator was miscalibrated and the clicking you had us hearing was a door sticking trying to find is home. That random power maybe seeing temp and setting that blend door to it's position and not seeing it? Hard to put into words. IDK. I feel you resolved the issue.

I ve never heard of someone with an aftermarket sunroof. Seems pretty risky. Lol. I could just see an install going wrong in too many ways. It would leave me getting drips in the eye every drive while I take a drag off my coffee. . Its Like adding a 3000 watt subwoofer system to stock electrical system. Don t do it! Why not just get a JEEP with TOPLESS OPTION! To each their own I suppose. Lol.

Eric, let's get some REAL jobs to do soon! Here in Florida Corrosion Belt we don't get to sit around waiting for things to do! There is always shocks to change, brakes, A/C service, tune ups and oil changes. We can't hang out in the kitchen with the pretty girls! Need some exhaust system change outs, mufflers replaced, tires replaced and coolant leaks fixed. How about an alignment!

3: 20 There is nothing wrong with my vehicle but if it sits more than 3 weeks without being started and driven, then the battery will die.
I don't drive a lot and even when the vehicle was new, when I forgot to drive it, the battery died.
It's the nature of the beast with all these electronics nowadays.
Technology will be the downfall of civilization.

I cannot believe how our automobiles have got so dependent on computers. We have gone from walking, horse, horse and buggy, mechanical with some electricity and to mechanical/computer run autos! Next will be battery/computer run autos. It seems like we try to make our lives easier, but at the same time make them more complex! Progress or confusion? Such times we live!
