Chevy Tracker: Bad Purge Valve or Bad ECM? David: Hey Eric have you changed out the bcm body control module on a Dodge Dakota. I have a 2002 Dakota and was having the horn honk without hitting the horn and the headlights didn't turn off even when the switch was turned off. I found out that the bcm controls all them functions and bought a refurbished tested BCM. The horn doesn't honk automatically anymore and the headlights turn on and off correctly but now my remote door lock on the key doesn't open the doors. Any ideas how to fix that. I disconnected the battery over night then reconnected it to see if that would reset it but no luck. Thanks for any tips.

Bummer what the end result was. That's the bad part of owning an older vehicle is obtaining parts, it seems even salvage yards now don't even keep older vehicles around for parts. It's always nice when you can just swap in a different ECM(instead of having to program a new one) to see if it is the problem child. There wasn't really any way of knowing it had other EVAP issues until fixing the first issue it had. Probably the driver in the ECM got tired.

Did a similar repair to my son's mustang thanks to one of your previous videos. First time using my newly acquired Autel. Found that the PCM was commanding the purge solenoid on, but did not have the beans to actuate it verified by voltmeter vs test light. Replaced PCM with a used one and programmed the keys with the Autel. I felt like a boss that day! You did it, so I could do it too!

Eric, I'm saddened to read about the evap codes because in my mind this truck was a keeper! My 97 Dodge truck is currently running on a replacement ECM I think I paid 27. 50 for several years ago. Plug and Play! Oh how I miss the good old days! Thanks for Sharing!

so the guy knows how to throw parts at a problem and didnt want to throw the pcm at the problem? even though he knew about it and had it. whats the worst that could have happened, you plug it in and the car doesn't turn on then you take it to the shop

Eric did you see your buddy Ivan find the rear window washer fluid leaking and pulling down the can bus voltage causing a no start
That was a really cool find
Both you guys are great troubleshooters I watch ever day and Scotty once a week

Rick, I enjoy eatching your professional attitude, and logocal diagnostic skills; you are tops.
For a few months when first watching you, I thought you were saying, Self made Auto. LOL!

You're Lucky. Usually I get them after they have tried replacing the PCM a few times, the have tore apart the wiring harness and it reeks of frustration and defeat.

One thing you notice, the best diagnosticians here on the net, Eric, Paul, Ivan and Keith, reach for the lowly test light first. No surprise.

Why did you pull the window switch video down? I was enjoying it - perhaps the Russian repair comment was upsetting people at the moment?
