My dad who would be 97 if he were alive today, could tell you about the dangers of open flames and gas tanks! When he was youngster during the Depression, he was playing behind a gas station in garage with a friend. And there was a bunch of old junk cars back there. I guess you would call them collector's item now, but I digress. His friend had a dime. A dime back in those days was a lot of money! Especially during the Depression. For some reason the friend was playing with the dime around the filler neck on an old pickup truck. Probably just showing off his kids tend to do. He dropped the dime into the gas tank. He begged my dad to strike a match so he could look down there and find his dime. My dad was like no way! Finally dad relented and struck the match and held it at arm's length over the filler neck so his friend could look down the neck into the tank. Just says the friend started gazing down into the murky depths of the gas tank a jet of flame came out! they both took off running home. Next thing you know the friend's mom is pounding on my dad's door raising hell because her son came home with no eyebrows no eyelashes and no bangs! Dad could tell the story a lot better than I can! That man had a lot of stories!

Eric - Please PLEASE consider getting yourself an Altair 4 Way Gas Detector. They are small, handheld, about 400 and can detect CH4 (methane, or gas vapors, H2S (hydrogen sulfide, O2 (oxygen) and CO (carbon monoxide. It will audibly and visible alarm when any one of the concentrations exceeds a safe limit. Use it any and every time you are working with an open flame ignition source and even a heat gun. Wow, I was puckered when you were torching that tin cover. Also, consider cold cutting whenever possible. Intuition tells me Jeep / Chrysler considers that ridiculous tin cover disposable. I wouldve cut it with some small cutting wheel and got a new one. HTH!

Fuel pump replacement that requires hammer, chisel, heat gun, drill and scraper. A Jeep engineer whose father was a chippie?
Edit: Seriously though, I always wonder when I see you drag out the fuel caddy. Do you charge the customer for half a tank of gas? If it was my Jeep I'd be happy to have all that muck out of the tank, but I can imagine some customers complaining if they don't get why.

Know it's silly and of course trust your experience but when you broke out the torch all I could think was KA-BOOM! :-)
After watching the full video couldn't help but think vandalism might have been the reason for fuel pump failure? Anyways great video and know it's 3 years old and commented anyways; -)

Hey Eric, I know this is 3 years to late. But you should buy a small server that you can save all your data from your tablets and can make it easier for you to pull up the data when you need it at a later time

Sparks plus gasoline make for explosions! Always keep your feet on the ground or use a grounding strap to avoid static discharges, I should talk using a cut off wheel to create an access door on my 06: -)

I know this is old but I think falling edge to falling edge is a half revolution 6: 25.
The bad segment presumably goes dead every time it comes across the brushes, of which there are two.

I replaced a fuel pump on a 2004 BMW 325i E46. It was actually easier than this Jeep! I cant believe that the Germans made it easier than this American thing.
