I help out a guy who just got tires put on at another shop. Shortly after that he was driving down the highway and the front wheel fell off! The damage wasn't to bad and it could have been a whole lot worse

Wow! You put lube on your wheel lugs, dont you know if you oil your lugs they will fall right off! I been oiling lugs for 50 years and never had any fall off. Of course you have to TIGHTEN them.
Dont recommend Never- Seize though, something about Never- Seize on lugs makes them feel like you could tighten them till you rip the studs out.
Sometimes aluminum wheels get a layer of corrosion on the backside where they meet the axle and youre squeezing that corrosion layer which may cause the wheel to loosen. I bet the wheel that got away had a big thick layer. If you have old corroded aluminum rims its good to scrape it off and then use a small sanding block make sure theyre nice and flat.

As a Friend of The Court in California, there, judgement went against the customer/driver most times where a Wheel fell off case arrived before the bench.
There's NO WAY this happened instantly and the driver had to have heard or felt the wheel becoming loose a long time before it could drop ALL the lugnuts. That took time and miles and the driver has to bear most of the responsibility for a total wheel load.
Re-torking has NEVER been an allowed argument in court. Wheels are never retightened after original sales of vehicles when new and manufacturers would never create culpability for designing wheels that needed retorquing.

I do all my own vehicle maintenance and repair, mostly because I know from experience how most technicians work. All that matters to them is beating book time, the more shortcuts the better.
Before I found my niche in plant operations and maintenance I worked in many different auto shops, in many different roles and I can say with certainty that Eric O is the most thorough, attentive, detail oriented and most importantly honest mechanic I have ever seen spin a wrench. If I ever get stuck with a problem I'm headed for upstate NY!
Thanks Eric, it's real nice to know there's still at least one guy doing the job right!

I had a Tire changed by a local shop. On my way to work (about 7 miles) I heard a loud popping noise When I got to work I checked the wheel that had been worked on. All 5 lugs were only finger tight. Fortunately the wheel did not come off. I have never been back to that shop and I have told every one I know what a sorry ass operation they were. CYA language on the receipt is pure BS!

Liked the way you cleaned up the flange ans threads of the lug bolts, working dealership level suspension bolts always get torqued. I know your arm is the torq wrench, but shit does happen and documentation is everything and lug bolts torqued. I never saw anyone ever clean off the wheel weight sticker glue pads unless the rim was getting painted.

TORQUE YOUR WHEELS! At minimum, every time you get your oil changed you should get your tires torqued, it takes 2 minutes and any shop will do it for free. Problem avoided. Or he didn't go back for his re-torque. As a tire guy of 15 years. simple stuff like re-torques not being done makes me cringe lol. Great video.

Show me a better mechanic on youtube, both in mechanical aptitude, and diagnosis. I kind of wish i took this route for a trade than the one i picked, steamfitting. I have no work at all, zero. Thanks to the economy. A good reputable mechanic will always be busy.

Good sir you are one of a kind mechanic and I just don't trust just anyone with my vehicles. You take time on the little things and go out of your way to clean the parts that most machanics would overlook. Awesome and over the top you are sir!

so let me get this straight? this dude pays for four new tires and a week later the wheel and all his lug nuts magically fall off? I would have some questions for that tire shop
reply

I hate when that happens. Watching your own wheel fly down the road is cartoonish and kinda upsetting when you remember a car needs 4 wheels to stay up!
