How Would You Diagnose This One?

I follow my gut on a repair and develop a test to prove my gut feeling. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. How would you diagnose a vehicle that you suspect was loosing compression under load?

How does shutting off the vehicle, then cranking it again, temporarily fix a sticking valve until the next hill? You're not shut down long enough for the guide or valve to cool and contract enough to allow movement again. Every sticking valve I've ever encountered, stayed in the open position, maintaining a constant loss of power until you done something specific to free it. To me, this seems more like a secondary ignition problem, which is something that would heat up and cool down in that short amount of time. That's just my opinion though. I'm in no way saying you're wrong, because I've seen stranger things with Ford products. A valve sticking on hills only, just defies logic for me.

What about the electric fuel pump? I used to work on dodge vans with the FI 360 and over time with high mileage theyd get a condition midway thru 3rd gear under full throttle, theyd sort of lay over and the power would drop off. Id seen this condition before on high performance Grand National engines so I put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and looped it under the engine bonnet into the cab so I could watch it and sure enough under extended full throttle in third, I could watch the fuel pressure start to drop off then youd feel the engine lay over power wise. A new pump definitely fixed it (replaced the whole FP module.

My Honda CRV had a similar problem but the VSA and check engine light would come on too. I took it to Honda for testing. They charged me 179 for testing and then wanted 4k to put a new VSA system in. I put fuel injector cleaner in and it would be okay until a hard pull acceleration. I put some Lucas Oil Deep Clean Fuel Injector Cleaner and the problem went away and never came back. I still put the Lucas Deep Clean Injector in every third tankfull

People's Republic of New York?
If you think NY State is govt controlled, you should try living in Ontario, Canada.
We cant even go to the doctor unless the govt says Yes. Many of us die on govt imposed waiting lists and there is little we can do about it. The govt lets us gamble at the Casino, but we cant buy healthcare even when our life depends on it. We dont have free healthcare, we have free waiting lists.

If you suspect running compression loss pull the cyl 3 valve cover knipendex the cyl 3 rockers off the push rods and leakdown test cyl 3 with the piston moved from top to bottom. If it passes leak down in all positions (just rotate the crank bolt while cyl 3 is under leak down pressure) then the bottom end is good.

I watched your ac resister video. My ac worked even tho its a 98 Silverado after changing the fan speed switch and fuse. Recharged ac and it worked all day. Then the next day when I came to a stop the air stopped. But when air moves thru coolers it is ice cold. Should I change the resistor or blower motor?

I'd take exactly the same approach you did. However, for guys with less resources on hand they could always tape a vacuum gauge to the windshield to verify a mechanical fault in the valvetrain. Of course cylinder identification would be out using that method.

when you put seafoam in it or another cleaner, it will sometimes work but usually its just a temp fix and the issue will return, so the best way is to pull the head and while you're at it, you might aswell do both of them, its cheaper and better in the long run.

I would tape a vacuum gauge to the windshield for a test drive uphill. Plus you can hear the weak cylinder during the crank after misfire. These are fun. Youll usually get them in with new coil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, injector assembly, EGR valve, etc. .rofl.

Sea foam, followed by a can of berrymans. Then get it up to operating temp and slowly add some cool water, then run the snot out of it. If that didnt do i the heads gotta come off. The miss fire is probably what nuked the converter initially.
