Cadillac SRX: Running Rich P0172 / Hard To Start
video description
Just to make you jealous, my Bradford Pears blossomed Monday. A sure sign spring is just around the corner here in the Carolinas.
I know you guys in the upstate are a month and half, or so, away from the ice going out. My sister left for Northville this morning. Her, her husband, and the kids, are going to check on my parents' house on the reservoir. They might even crank up a snowmobile or two for a little fun on the snow. Not sure how much snow is even on the ground at this point.
Anyway, I hope you and the family are all good. Take care, Alan

Cadillac seems to have a habit of doing things the hard way. I think it's because they try for innovative and end up straying from proven design concepts. It also leads to the Special Tool thing as well. Examples like the 4. 1HT (freestanding sleeves leading to blown head gaskets that needed a whole 'kit' - essentially an engine rebuild less lower end - and it's DFI integrated into the radio. Then there's the Northstar line, too many issues to mention, but the 900 water cooled alternator and starter under the intake come to mind. I'm not real familiar with the big 3. 0, but GDI in general is a bad idea with inherent issues, injectors running diesel pressures without diesel lubricity, intake fouling, etc.
There's a premium price on Caddys that extends to parts. Bet that injector is pretty pricy and probably special order. I doubt NAPA (not a sponsor) will have one.
Hope we get to see the injector changeout. Thanks, as always, for taking the time to share!

12: 50 that's the studio for you. Yep. Studio at GM, Stellantis, and Ford hold way too much power. Things that they control can be really crazy, joke at many places is that they get away with all this crap because they know where all the bodies are buried and executives don't want all their dirty laundry aired out. So. we have engineers working around studio decisions, which leads us to some real messes.

for several years the 2. 4L in my car now close to 400k had long cranking on cold starts changed every part i could that did nothing then this very cold winter started having intermittent no start just cranking thought it was gm passlock issue turns out it was fuel pump relay. bought standard ignition brand engine pops off moment you turn the key even if its -30 f

Ahh yes. the GM high feature v6. lol. Boy are they proud of that platform. I work with several guys that helped with the development of that motor. When this motor is longitudinal mount(STS and CTS) you have to remove the damn intake to do anything. so you were on the right track E. Either way that was a good diag. Nice work and thanks for sharing!

Brilliant diagnosis, accurate, cost effective - no parts cannon fired to get to the bottom of the problem. If I lived anywhere within a 500 mile radius, you would have my car to look after! You're a superstar of the automobile aftercare industry, no wonder NAPA is not a sponsor, they only get what is required to fix your customers cars! lol

That was impressive work how quickly you chased down the exact problem. I do hate those scan tools sometimes because of how they display info. 5K + misfires on 5 in history, a few misfires while running but that total miss counter stayed at 0 the whole time. Drives me crazy with the conflicting data. Maybe there's something I'm missing.

Here Ye Here Ye for the bore scope to confirm! Now, whats the best approach here. replace just one injector or all of them? Does it matter how many miles are on them or do you only replace the #5? Will the labor to do them all now cut down on labor in doing them one by one in the future?

It is amazing to watch you diagnose these in real time. In this case I noticed the freeze frame MAF was zero, which seemed odd. You quickly noticed the imbalance between the two banks, and quickly honed in on the problem. We'd also love to see you swap one of these out.

The special tools are a must. This ain't no PFI of old. I was told there was a tsb with an updated PN from GM on those injectors from my Chevy guy, covers some 3. 6's as well. ) I didn't look. Anyhow, at least it didn't hydrolock! Bore scopes are handy dandy!
