A sensor is in a good spot, when the manufacture needs to put a thick heatshield over it. All of that heat might reduce the senor's lifespan.
Some of these manufactures get really tiresome with their 30 different types of safeties to hold the plug clip in place. I have seen a lot of broken connectors that never fall off, so I have no idea why all of the additional safety locks were added to hold the tabs. I used to work for a place where mechanics glued broken connectors on with gasket maker or other real glue, because they feared the connector would come off. That is a very bad idea too.
On A/C connectors. I know why those high pressure lines have additional locks sometimes. One time I was jiggling a high pressure connector, in order to see if it was leaking, because I could not find the leak. The high pressure line came off in my hand blowing 350 PSI refrigerant all over my hand and leg. That was the last time I ever did a giggle test on an A/C line. Good thing I had my safety glasses on and a thick leather glove on due to the heat.

You need a camera person. Someone to film so your hands are free. And someone to keep you smiling and happy. Mrs. O in a bikini running the camera would keep you smiling and happy and get good film shots for you. No way you could be anything but happy and smile with the beautiful Mrs O helping. lol. Just a thought since I imagine you get frustrated at times, and I've seen you ALMOST say a few words. What better way to keep you happy and working in a good mood. Thanks Eric. Does anyone know if its normal for a coolant sensor to start out reading, say 200C, at startup on a cold vehicle, then drop and stabilize, adjusting to what seems to be the correct coolant temp as the engine warms? its a 2006 Ford F150; i thought the scan tool data (OBD2 also) for this sensor would show a temp similar to the ambient temp as well as the engine temp? Seems odd. The reason i even looked was that as the engine warms and the thermostat opens, the engine temp gauge on the dash shows the needle somewhat past center, to the right, although it never gets to the red zone. Truck seems to run fine as the temp gauge has been very consistent over time. Just thought the temp gauge + the scan data for the coolant sensor was odd and maybe indicating a bad sensor?

I fired the parts cannon at a P0172 code in my 2002 Neon SE with the big 2. 0L and 161, 000 on the clock. Gas mileage went from 22-26 mpg to 16 mpg and the Money light. Built an inexpensive smoka, no vacuum leaks
Fire 1, plugs and map sensor. Now idle issues
Fire 2, new IAC and throttle body clean. idle fixed, still P0172.
Fire 3 New injectors and O2 sensors, but the one in the cat welded itself in. No joy Won t pass Pa inspection and now I m ready to push it off a cliff.
Only joy I have had lately is hearing my ex wife bought a 2013 Equinox at an auction for 5 grand. No keyfob, Service Stabilitrak message, TPM message and abs light on and 4 tires that will not pass Pa inspection either. It s got the ecotec that likes to blow up if oil gets low.

Hi Eric, I used to work as a design engineer for a supplier to Nissan for the head lamps and tail lamps. Preventing soft set connections was a big deal. During design reviews both internally and with the customer (Nissan) the manufacturing engineer and design engineer needed to show proof of how we check for and eliminate the potential for a soft set connection. In most cases we use connectors with the secondary lock (red tab) that a machine can push and verify that the red tab is in the locked position. It was a big deal to a lot of people. Oh well I m back to being a mechanic now and much happier

No mans land is the ladies rest room. Speaking of connectors that fall off. The plug fell of the light switch on my 1969 ford pickup one night. Fortunately I was only 1/2 mile from home because the head lights and parking lights didn't work. I didn't have a flash light. Found out that by turning on the hazard lights and pushing the brake slightly the parking lights and tail lights stayed on so I drove home that way. i got a flash light and plugged the connector back on to the light switch. That never happened again so i am guessing they didn't plug it all the way in at the factory.

I absolutely hate the green lock connectors on Nissans work good new but get the usual dirt crud and oil on them and they won t release to save your life god forbid you go to do the passenger side cam sensor on a 4. 0 on a frontier or pathfinder I ve broken more heater hoses for when the connector finally comes loose then I care to admit. Was being rushed one time and actually got scalded when the heater hose broke won t ever change them on a hot motor again a waiter can wait unless they d like to pay my hospital bill

Connecting lock was invented by a group of attorneys after losing a lawsuit. Harness too short from factory, broken motor mount pulls everything apart and a mother with a minivan full of kids stalls on the train tracks. Or some other tale of woe. Cars are built to be assembled on a line, after that it's tough luck to us all. These videos encourage one to keep thirty year old cars if not corroded on the road. Thanks.

Last year a bad coolant temp sensor on my 98 Chevy K3500 with the 7. 4L left me stranded for a little while with a crank, no start. After it cooled down, it started up and I was able to make it home. I had the same thing happen some years back on my 98 Chevy K1500 with the 5. 7L so I always keep one on hand and so I fired the parts cannon at the 7. 4L and put a new sensor on it and that fixed the problem.

The germans love to tell people they shouldn't work on their own cars if they aren't qualified, hence the non standard 7mm internal hex on certain brake calliper guide bolts.
Kinda makes sense not to want to risk running someone over coz you didn't fix your brakes right. It happens, I've had occasion fo flag some one down before and warn them their brake callipers were not put together right.

Prior to the invention of the lock tabs, during OBD-I (and maybe before, doing a touch test to see if any connectors were loose was part of the diagnostic tree. Move them and see if the conditions and/or readings changed. I found few, if any, loose or disconnected, but apparently somebody thought it was necessary. Then again, I was more of a heavy line guy than a driveability guy, so there's that.

I did that on my 99 Saturn in 2008. It was always idling high as the sensor was telling the engine it was cold. The sensor was 22 bucks and the special socket another 13. After I replaced it the engine idled back to 800 and the gauge read correctly. Such an easy car to work on. I look at the engine on my 2018 Focus and I say what's that thing? Or what does that big metal thing with fuel lines do?

I work at a GM assembly plant. The reason for the lock (CPA connector position assurance) is if the connector isn t seating all the way generally you can t push the lock in. So it s basically to ensure during assembly connectors are seated due to us being rushed with jobs being loaded. An engineer told me within the next couple years they will be on 99% of the connectors SMH
