Loud Grinding Noises & Dash Lights On - Prius Edition autos: Early 2000s Holden in NZ had rust jacking like issues tho ZERO salt r snow EVER I was the disc brake machinist for a dealer and they didn t really admit it nore did GM/Holden Australia cause they claimed they never seen it happen before.
I use to get the odd car loose it s friction material suddenly and grind and some were coming loose when it was time for new pads n disc skim (rear issue)
I also so it once on a Toyota and both makes used PBR Australia pads etc and same looking style.
I suspect an issue at manufacturing.
No these cars didn t get rusty from dipping boats in the ocean either.
Nothing got done and I was suggested to keep my mouth shut.

You do a great job of showing how to do the work in the rust belt. These tips and tricks have helped me even down here in the south. You do an especially great job in this video teaching WHY. Why you don't just slap a set of new pads in and call it good. Why you don't just shove in a new sensor. Why you have to do the work to get down to the root of the problems and why youinspect other things that are no problem now. but will cause the customer problems later. The level of TRUST your customer has in your word Shouts from the Mountain Top I feel Safe putting my families life in his hands. Even if I only install a set of pads it is never Just a Brake Job! Thank you fore your Excellent Work.

A PRIIIIUS! Don't ya know Eric, you're supposed to say, WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! the ENTIRE time you're behind the wheel of one of those!
Neighbor's '06 Impala I did a rear brake job on just 6 years ago, and EVERYTHING is completely seized. He's put 1, 400 miles on it since then, lol. So, the friction material is good! And. that's about it, lol. There's nothing left of the car. Just trying to keep it going as long as possible. and we're close to the finish line with this one. He had me weld his parking brake cable back together. I used a cut cotter pin end.

You know I've seen a bunch of Toyota rear hub bearings throw those codes - the way they are made over time corrosion gets in them. When the road gets salty then salt water gets in them and probably shorts them out slightly and sends the ABS wonky. Those bearings will probably last another winter and then start making noise from salt water intrusion.
Edit: Damn - those are really smoked. Never seen one quite get that bad.

Hey Eric, perhaps this might sound funny but i'm curious with all the rust issues (road salt) that you have in your state if you have ever tried spraying new brake parts with a Rust Proofing spray paint (mainly for yourself and long term clients) that will likely come back and so you can see if that does any good in preventing or lessening rust from forming. Curious if it would make a difference on new parts.

I don't understand when I take my truck in if I have a problem with it breaks. Especially if there is a noise or something I get it done. I don't need an estimate. It's got to be done people these days. They want a nickel and dime everything but they have no issues of buying their boos and they're cigarettes and their pot. But they don't want to get their vehicle fixed. I don't understand that. Just get it done.

I live in North Carolina. So there are no issues with rust rotted rotors. I used to get mine (DYI) turned at a local shop but then found that new ones were damn near the same cost. I had to smile at your observation that most of the shops in your area (the PRNY more broadly) sold their lathes long ago. Great videos and lessons Eriic. And keep the dry wit humor coming, too.

Another great video - thanks for bringing us along. Looking forward to subsequent videos showing repairs. Splitting diagnosis and repairs, in this case, works really well. Allows us to take advantage of your deep knowledge of what has happened and why without you feeling you have to short cut explanations in the interest of limiting the length of your videos.

My Brother bought a set of Bear Claw brake shoes for his 77 chevy van. He was driving along and the back tire locked up and skidded. He put in Reverse and heard a clunk and some weard noises. pulled the drum open and the pad had become fully unbonded. The material wasnt riveted to the shoe was just glued. First time I'd ever see a brake shoe do that

How did Mrs O's high dollar brakes work out? I'm havin the same issue on an 2011 DTS Caddy with shimmy and bought the coat/drilled/slotted rotors, but just gonna go with the ceramic pads. I am in South Dakota where rust isn't as bad. We've got some big Muleys and Elk round here if you ever get a chance to Escape from NY. Even Pliskin could use a break.

Looks like a very similar braking package on the front of that Prius as my 11 corolla, I ve had very great luck with centric coated rotors and akebono pads, lasted me 4 years in the PRNY and all that took them out from lasting about that much longer was a pin boot that tore and seized the pin on the passenger side last winter

Those of us who have seldom driven vehicles need to do a brake inspection or have it done, to look at the bonding of the shoes and pads, as well as look at leaky hydraulic parts. Nice DIY trick on the sensor. If you design a system to be logically repaired, as Toyota seems to do, it will last so much longer. thanks.

When you are lucky enough to find a good mechanic, you value his judgement as this customer here does. I enjoy the different brake jobs because it's all worthwhile information, and since I do my own rigs, that little bit I glean off of Eric O's videos may be the difference between an easy job and a miserable one!

I loved the idea of regenerative braking, but was surprised at how hard it is for brakes to survive without being regularly used. If I owned a Prius I'd make sure to jam on the brakes once in a while to try and keep everything moving. Like parking brakes, if you don't use them, you lose them.

It's not the Brake-Kleen orchestra/bell that's the problem - it's the missing bass riff when Big Nasty shows up. which is very rare these days. You know things are serious when the bass riff plays before you even see Big Nasty. It's like Jimi Hendrix testing his wah pedal before Voodoo Chile.
