Sometimes A Lucky Guess Is Way Easier Than An Actual Diag Dana: Out of curiosity. Do people ever sell these rusting out hills that still technically run? Like this one. ball park guess. How much could you get one of these type junkers for? A couple bucks above scrap? Below Scrap be Price? I'm clueless. So, just for pure morbid curiosity?

My work partner drove his Ford pick up to work one rainy morning and when he went to get lunch, his truck wouldn t start security light was flashing everything seem to work except the starter wouldn t click. He had to have it towed turned out it was that module that sits above the spare tire in the back Had shorted out. Apparently that s a common problem on Ford pick up trucks
So I was doing some service work on my spare tire on my 2005 Ford pick up and I just happened to look up there at that module and I noticed it was all corroded and then I noticed it was cracked almost in half truck still ran so I bought a brand new module just in case I would hate to be stranded because of a driving through a mud puddle.

just a little note for you. don't be surprised if a swarm of PA cars show up in the future. The state is considering legislation to discard Inspections entirely or drop them to when the vehicle changes hands. because the STATE makes no money on state inspections (just the inspection stickers)
That said, I have never heard of a single situation where that air suspension ever worked or was present to begin with. Do those modules/motors fail the second they roll off the factory floor, or what?

I just got to say I m continually horrified by the rust you guys are dealing with in what are not very old cars.
Here in Central Queensland Australia I thought we had bad rust because of tropical rainfall and being close to the coast but you guys are seriously dealing with absolutely catastrophic rust!
If you are totally on top of your maintenance can you prevent it or are you just delaying the inevitable by a few years? Great Content: )

Man,
If I lived there I'd put in as many undercar car washes as the bank would let me float.
May not stop them from rusting out but it would have to help slow it down!
My local car wash does a 59. 95 special and you get as many washes as you want (including undercar) per month.
I use it 3 or 4 times a week when they're salting the roads and my 2004 Silverado still looks like new underneath.

I don't understand how millions and millions of people justify living in the rust belt. Your wages have to be 30-50%above national averages just to replace your super overpriced 100, 000 vehicles every 5-10 years.
I can't fathom having such a disposable product; a liability, at asset prices.
In the grain belt, my 18 year old car has no rust like that at all. 300, 000 miles and going strong.

Living my whole life in Michigan and as a retired mechanic I always thought Michigan was the King of the Rust Belt when it came to rust damage to vehicles. After watching your videos and seeing the extensive damage to PRNY vehicles I bow to the King. One question, do you sometimes get concerned about even lifting a car on the hoist in fear that the frame could completely fail?
reply

Why on earth would anybody keep buying vehicles that do not have galvanised frames Surely there is enough of the interested American public to make a horrendous row about it! One of the main reasons for VW s success in UK is they don t rust much ( there s always going to be someone who keeps his motor on the beach ) I cannot answer for VWs built in US.

The condition of the body looks pretty good! Too bad about the frame. We suffer the same fate here in Northeast Ohio. I have an '06 Explorer with only 120K, but similar condition frame, and body still looking good. All our cars succumb to the same rust cancer. Hoping Surface Shield will change our luck going forward.

Funny story, my neighbor had one of these and he had a problem where if you d take off the fuse cover, it would start, put it on, dies, the code was lost communication with fuel pump module, however we noticed the fuel pump relay, if we touch it, we hear it kick in, changed out the fuse box n the issue was fixed

I've been off work just had knee surgery done. I'm a union journeyman millwright in a paper mill so not a vehicle mechanic. I absolutely love watching sma video's! I especially like when Mr O explains his thought process on how he diagnosis issues! Thank you sir for sharing!

5: 00 am and SMA video. How to work on a truck in the PRNY. While the rust falls around you? This guy is the Sherlock Holmes of vehicle repair! It s all elementary? Knowledge is power! And at SMA, Eric has the knowledge of the RUST belt!
reply

Nah, you weren't lucky. You earned it! I've heard horror stories about Ford trucks needing the cab removed to get to the engine. And Ford truck taillights that cost 5600 to replace. Do you avoid working on those?
reply

You covered my first question. I was going to ask if you would pass the inspection on it. Is it able to be road safe or is it too dangerous to try? Only use left for it is a plow truck in a private lot?
reply

What's really sad is somewhere, somebody is prepared to put a sticker on it and then the death trap will be on the road. The issue being the danger to another road user if it lets go.
reply

if any mechanic is allowed a lucky guess from time to time, then i think eric qualifies.
what do they say? fortune favours the prepared mind.
something like that anyway.

reply

It's old hat, but just seeing a vehicle that new rotted like that is irrationally infuriating. Vehicles are supposed to last multiple decades, not a handful of years.
reply

I had an 2011 denali that had electrical issues that would put it in limp mode. Had the same issues. Took out the module and sealed up the connector. Back in business
reply

You have my permission and encouragement to go shoot that yap trap next door. Is that thing owned by the same dude that knows exactly when to start mowing his lawn?
reply

Love when my day starts out with a rusty truck and Eric O going scientist on a quick fix most would take hours to figure out. Experience wins! Screw tik tok!
