Helping Out My Sister - Ford Explorer Flex Pipe Have you tried spraying the undersides with used automatic transmission fluid for rust protection? its about the only fluid that gets down to the metal and its a waste anyway. Its a quick 100 or so. Lasts two years, one year on exposed spots. The car must be really, really dry. We compared against all the professional rust protection coats, it outdid them. Some even makes things worse by trapping moisture.

Eric,
I have a question. My mother has a Chevy S-10 pickup at her place in the Adirondacks. I have no idea how old it is, maybe a 96'. It does get driven much at all. Only the house caretake drives it to run errands for the house.
Anyway, it recently has some battery work done. The Caretake brought it back for the place that replaced the battery with the Check Engine still on. I ask my sister why did these folks not clear this code before giving it back to the caretaker, knowing we'll never drive it enough to clear the code before we get it inspected. Could this shop have cleared the code for having the batter disconnected and such? I told my sister they could have easily done so. However, I guess that all depends on if the have a scanner? Also, if we take it in for NY State Inspection with a check engine light on, what will happen?
Thanks. Alan form NC.

Mr. O, I understand you wanting to do a good professional job for your sister and all.
But you could have saved all that grinding and welding time by using muffler putty, then wrapping the joints with muffler tape.
That would normally be just fine. But to give it that professional look, wrap the muffler tape with metal foil duct tape.
It adds that finishing touch that says, This job was done by a highly trained professional, so don't question it.

Morning, your still a great repair guy in my book. If you weren't so damn far away, this 70 yo would not be afraid to drop off his vehicle for repairs. Oh, please wear ear protection also. As someone who has working with steel for 40 years and used hammer and grinders on it, believe me when after time, one starts saying ( WHAT) more. Keep up the good repairs.

Nice! Flex pipe certainly has changed over the years. Back in the day it was nothing more than super thin metal in about 1/2'' segments and you cut the pipe to length. That stuff was only good for a few high engine revs or one trip around the block before you blew it out. You did your Sis a solid. I hope she repaid you by treating you to an ice cream cone.

Yep. I have a 2014 Explorer Sport. The turbo model, so I have 2 flex pipes. The short one went on mine, and its only available from Ford, no aftermarket. He couldn't do what you did here either, as the back of the flex is right up against the flange, and he had no room to weld anything. Pipe is about maybe 2 feet long? 395 cdn. Ouch. Nice job, Ford.

Eric you do nice work. I bought a flex head torch for my mig and it s a game changer, I start as high as I can on the pipe form and oval pattern ( with the puddle ) between the old pipe and the new pipe and don t stop till you get to the bottom. I find I get a leak free joint when everything is done correctly.

Do not put your welding skills down Eric, I have seen plenty of your welds in the past, and they are better than most. You want to see poor welding, gotta see Ray's. He really does need some lessons. That crackling sound of the mig tells me the machine is set up well for the job too.

GOOOOOOOOOOOO FORD! 600 bucks for a little flexi pipe! YEESH!
I'm sure she'll offer to pay for the job, but also I'm pretty sure you wouldn't take it anyway. So she'll reward you instead by spreading the word that she has the best brother in the world, and THAT is priceless.

Man, I'd like to watch the welding in real time, not sped up. Fact is, every sped-up sequence in SMA videos could be real time for me. When I'm watching, I sometime touch the mouse so the time remaining shows, then I wish there was more time remaining.

He must hold no ill will towards his sister, as he didn't leave any undetectable perforations in the weld by accident. It's so weird Eric, whenever I drive the Explorer I get so relaxed and just want to take a nap ever since you fixed it. :-D
reply

Very straight cutting. When the sparks from welding were hitting your arm I expected a few ouchies. You must have leather for skin LOL. Those darn factory flexies don't last the life of the vehicle and should be made to be replaced more easily.

Flex pipe = cost
Sawzall blade = no charge
Welding = no charge
Grinding wheels = no charge
Final inspection = no charge
Lava soap to wash hands when complete 250. 00. LOL
JUST HAD TO JERK YOUR CHAIN ERIC.

I had a shop work on my wife s old Honda accord for a loud exhaust and they told us we need a complete new system. I denied the repair, and took it to this well know muffler shop for a new donut gasket, and flange bolts.

Great info, sir! This tells me that I might be able to buy a welder and replace 2 flex pipes under my V6 FWD. One is only 3 or 4 inches long, the other is about 8 inches.
Now I just need a hoist!
And a garage. .. .

Been welding for 123 years, you should have removed whole exhaust from car and then welded that piece in. You also should be using NASA certified flux and a Nuclear Titanium Flux Capacitor Welder made by Tonka Toys.

Love your content and your work. But it hurts my soul a little everytime the welder comes out. Even just welding safety to start lmao. You get it done though, and that at the end of the day is what really matters.

if your brother could have towed it in LOL. ad after the video Western welding shirts. with the pipeline refrense i was thinking where is his starched shirt and cap pulled down to keep hotties out of your ear
reply

Underpants man I particularly liked how you took a look at yourself in the mirror when you finished welding I have never somebody else do that before so retrospective. I couldn't do Im not that bigger man
