Split pins are not that complicated and as long as you bend the ends in different directions it will work fine I have seen nails being used when they couldn t get a cotter pin and the old one was not going to work properly so they just drove in what ever they could find that would fit in the hole and bent it over my favorite pin was the farmer that just cut a piece off of the barb wire fence and put it in there that barb was handy enough for the tractor

I ve got an idea (sometimes dangerous. Every 12 months you take apart the front rotors, brake pads, that clip he had to fool with, calipers basically everything that tends to rust together, so that when it comes time to replace those parts that endure normal wear and tear, all you replace are those worn parts, not the whole front end.
Just a thought.

Dana corporation supplied napa chassis and master ride chassis for many years. Dana sold their chassis business to a financial group, who later sold it to Federal mogul/moog in 2014. Napa awarded mevotech with the master ride line first and enventually the premium line. Napa was not a great company to deal with, and they did not play well with FM/moog.

I just wanted to say thank you for another great video. Cant wait to see you cross that million sub mark.
If we all just share with one person everytime we watch a video we could help him reach that 1 mill mark. Its totally free and a great way to show support. Just thought id throw that out there. Hope everyone has a great day

I'm 70 & have been bending cotter pins JUST LIKE YOU! U made that job look easy. I remember an episode where u said it's not expensive owning torches. I know absolutely NOTHING on burning, flames, etc. I'm embarrassed to say. Now, I'm just too damn old. Great video!

You hit on the one thing that annoys me and that's is Soder and not Solder. I could understand it if the spelling was different but I believe it is the same. And FYI I am in Australia.
I only mention it because you did. Keep up the good work.

Nothing like a fresh fried snap ring to fire up your ball joint! Nice work to not disturb more corrosion than necessary. Napa has the price levels for parts that will get the cost conscious maybe a few years or oem equal if you pay the price!
reply

Do you know why NAPA says this.
NAPA does not manufacture, distribute, sell, or supply any product or automotive part.
Research Napa and that comes up. So if their saying that then what are all the parts your using lol

Hey Eric, just wanted to say I bought a pair of the Astro led light sticks because of you. Love them! Nice to have a mechanic I can trust and learn from. You always give me confidence to tackle my projects.

Please keep in mind that it's helpful to us DIYers to see what or why the ball joint was indicated to need replacement. I mean as opposed to one of the other parts of the suspension that might go clunk or thunk.

The car magazines in the 60s stressed to not mix greases of unknown origins due to possible incompatibility. I hadn't thought about that in years. Are there two type bases for wheel bearing grease now a days?
reply

last one of those I did the dust shield had rotted away (ontario rust belt) so I could get to the clip and just used a punch remove it. the rest was exactly the same. And that is also how i do the cotter pins.
reply

It DOESN'T MATTER what way the cotter/split pin is bent as long as it doesn't touch or foul any rotating component and rhe pin doesn't fall out plain and simple so there is no right or wrong way to bend it.

SMA Sunday special edition! The Astro tool for the WIN! Need to pause video to make my English muffin and add some cherries preserve, with some coffee? As always your content is great at anytime of day.

Mevotech is junk. Ask me how I know, tried their replacement lower control arms for a 2002 Neon. Lasted 6 months, ball joints gave out. Believe it of not, Dorman makes better parts.
reply

I gave up on the greaseable style parts for my cars. Non-greasable is good enough to go first 15 years then it will last until it drives into the scrap yard on the second go around.

Funny you should mention livin down south, my 2000 F350 7. 3l w/211, 000 miles has 0 rust or bondo anywhere on the frame or body. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

reply

We used to have to worry about mixing sodium-based greases and lithium-based greases, but these days I'm not even sure that you can still get incompatible greases anymore.

To be honest, for a 12 year old car in the PRNY, it looks pretty good underneath.
Unless it was a Southern States rental car that finally made it's way to the PRNY.
