This Kia Is Running Out Of Time! I picked up a similar problem with a friends diesel Ford, it was a 16 valve four cylinder engine that refused to start all of a sudden. Using Forscan software I called up the oscilloscope view and compared the cams and crank data which showed them out of synch with each other. A new timing chain kit sorted the problem and she fired up without removing the cylinder heads as nothing had came into contact as it had only jumped one tooth.

My daughter has a 2021 Kia Seltos with about 70, 000+ miles. She bought it new. Her engine light came on and the car stalled but restarted. She took it to her usual shop and they said it was showing codes P000b and P0017 and should go to the dealer. She brought it to the dealer, and they found the exhaust cam phaser was loose. It must have also damaged the cam because they replaced both the cam and the phaser. They also replaced a couple of oil seals. The work was done under warrantee at no charge to her. Her car is running great again. She got lucky it was still under warrantee. It was the first trouble she had with the car.

Hey Eric, please forgive what is probably a really dumb question, but as far as simulating a cylinder pressure test, couldn't you just do a relative compression test via current draw test on the starter and crank the engine in clear-flood mode (if it has one) or by disabling the injectors? I would think if all cylinders on that bank were consistently off (by a common delta, that would offer the same result? Thanks as always, Eric.
reply

No Eric, you can do it, i can't.
A person would need more than a casual experience to understand how these systems work, then interpret what the data means, providing you had the equipment. These cars have reached a point, where the average shade tree mechanic can install the easy parts via the parts canon. if the canon shot didn't hit the target, you can only hope the garage that you selected is as good a you.

Since we don't know if the cam phaser retards or advances cam shouldn't you unplug both solenoids? Since the other one could be causing the problem? Just nitpicking since I agree it does not seem to be moving when the solenoids are attached and its a mechanical problem. As a home DIY I'm constantly debating getting a scope but so far have not been able to justify it.

That was cool but the ecm thought it was 24 degrees and the pico measured at 14? Also read 0 and no change in rpm. It needs a hammer to the phazer. I was always told You can measure it to death but it still needs a part. True words Carl- I hear ya now. Says 0 but no sound change, it's lying. Great Job. Why do they design things so you can't work on them? Genius

I'll never own another Kia. The 2017 Soul, we have now, uses 3 or more quarts of oil between oil changes (always never more than 3000 miles between oil changes. While under warranty, we brought it up with Kia several times. They told us that this is normal, that all newer cars today use oil. lol. Maybe so, but not that much oil. Anyways, another great video.

Uh O. Take it to Eric O. To bad these other Shop's don't have knowledgeable people that know how to trouble shoot something a REAL ISSUE? And then be able to fix it? Thank God you are in the Immediate area Eric, apparently even the Dealers don't know what to do on there own Vehicles? Let's see if this one returns to your shop to be repaired?
reply

The unfortunate thing in all this is that the customer gets screwed by the original shop since they threw parts at it instead of properly diagnosing it. Personally, I would hope that the customer sees this video and sues the other shop for throwing parts at their vehicle.

Great title! Reminds me of my favorite saying, There is no time like the present, and there is no present like time!
Thought this up in the eighties, some self medicating could have been involved, after all it was the 80 s, thank the Lord, that s over with

Does Eric made house calls to Pittsburgh? Need a steering rack in an 05 Chev-Ro-Let. He could make a great video! Then he could visit Danner and his brother at their newish shop. I love laying under a7k lb truck on jack stands and jacks. In the cold. Life!

Hmm, cam/crank correlation error. Better whip a full set of plugs and coil packs at it! What a bunch of tools. I wonder what the replacement for this scam/hackjob will be in the glorious compulsory EV pod car future for terrible shops.

Nice video Eric, I had one that kicked my but it was a Sedona, after putting a new belt on it it still was out of phase, I found it had sheared the index pin off the cam, I'd have them pull the gear and check the pin

3 minutes in and already have an idea of what this is going to be. My Kia had same signs and symptoms at 104k miles. Timing guards are plastic and wore out. Had it repaired but the motor still failed at 118k.
reply

Maybe the other shop will ask you to just fix it?
Video! Fixing a Kia intake cam timing error. Sweet!
Or not. Dang it. Thanks for the great video, Mr. O. And for going the extra mile.

I hope there were other codes we didn't see. No reason to change plugs and coils given the codes. It was presumably to chase the P0300 but given the other codes they should have ignored it.

As a shop Knowing that there is Cam timing codes. Why would you even shoot parts at at if you have 0 clue what you are even looking at. That's just dumb and ridiculous! Kudos Eric

Great video and diagnosis. Good to know that the data stopped reading when unplugged.
I see the glasses dangling around your neck. I guess you finally gave in to them.

reply

The PID will drop from scan data because the reference voltage signal has open circuit too. Without reference voltage no valid data, if reference is provided.
reply

The scope doesn't lie! Hope this isn't another twisted camshaft like the one you and Ivan found. I saw that video.
Good one Mr. O. Nice to see Mrs. O.
