It's a premium SUV showdown - which out of the Mercedes GLE, BMW X5 and Lexus RX is worthy of your cash? Our review of these big 4x4s takes a look at everything from interior space, practicality, driving impressions and - importantly - a traffic light drag race. Can the Japanese Lexus RX outclass the German X5 and GLE? Or will the GLE (formerly the Mercedes ML) romp away with the victory? There's only one way to find out. Enjoy!

I need help here. I am looking for a car with a lot of front seat space. I am taller and heavier than the presenter. I am starting seriously to hate the new model cars with massive center consoles. So far I have done test drive on Merc GLE (you feel like can of mackerel inside, Landrover Discovery (weird floor bumps pushing your legs under the seat, Lexus RX, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, VW Tuareg, BMW X5 (all with massive center console issues) and they all suck! My 1980 Golf 1 had more space on the front seat. What is wrong with manufacturers? I may need to buy used Merc ML. I can't stress how frustrated I am the last 2 weeks.

Well that Lexus is just an ugly thing! I am not sorry to say this! Might be the most reliable from these 3, and might be the confiest and luxuriest, but still, I cannot stand that exterior! I like the interior better! And there is another thing to mind too, if you get a second hand, germans are very much liked in my country, therefore you will find easily decent shops! But with an advanced Toyota, which has electric motor and batteries. well good luck with that!
So yeah, I would buy german!
But I would consider Audi Q7 or Q8.
These are my thoughts, and might differ from others opinion.

Lexus (and Toyota of course) is the brand, which hardly makes no mistakes.
There are some let downs on every series with performance issues (steering, boot space etc. But all of that is not a deal breaker.
It is sooo difficult to find reports of Lexus broken down.
If the car is well maintained and you don't get a lemon, I bet, that EVERY Lexus will reach the 300k miles mark without anything that has to be changed.
The magic word: QUALITY(CONTROL)
Also. ALWAYS get the V6. Cheaper to maintain and only a bit higher fuel consumption with a lot more power.

Remember the the RX 450h is not better than the RX 350. People thought bigger # is better. No unlike the Mercedes GLS 550 > GLS450. The Lexus 450h is not higher end than the 350. They are basically the same thing. The 450h is just a hybrid version. That's all. I don't like hybrid cars. They probably save you like what, $10-$20 on gas per month? But when you need to replace the battery or repair the electric motor, that cost is breakeven, maybe cost even more than all the gas money you save.

As we all know now - those of you who jumped into tbe BMW or Merc and managed to hit 150k miles or klms without major issues costing a fortune to replace - are regretting the purchase. Lexus all day every day. If its like its predecesors the Lexus will do 300k in a heart beat if maintained. 5 years from now the repairs will out weigh the value of the car for the Merc and BMW.

I really don-t know why everyone is choosing the Lexus. My family gets bad service at the dealers and they are cheaply built compared to the Mercedes and BMW. My dad currently has the Mercedes and it-s very reliable. Never broken on us once and we have taken it to the middle of Australia and back. The X5 is the best though because it is the nicest car to be in and to drive

Last week I picked up a 2016 RX450h F-Sport similar to the one on this review, what a car enough power, very quick when needed in Sport and Sport + mode but very economical 60mpg when driven slowly in traffic and around quiet roads in ECO mode, the best of both worlds. and it big enough for a family of four.

the Lexus is miles apart from the german competition, or any for that matter. It's such a standout car. This, of course, is the same story in 2020. People are starting to wake up to the fact that german -quality- and engineering are far from what they used to be 10-15 years ago

Some people may claim that they save a bit of gas when they purchase a hybrid car. The thing is, you pay for at least 20 k over price and if you calculate how much you need a gasoline engine per year is less than what you pay for the hybrid car for a years. -

Thanks! I was debating between RX and GLE for my next car, and this video is of tremendous help. RX added a touchscreen to its 2020 version and with Android Auto support I won't need to deal with their infotainment system anymore, which is also a plus.
