I was at the launch for the brand new Renault Scenic and Grand Scenic and have the low down on this 5 seater and 7 seater people carrier. The Scenic comes with seven different engine options (two petrol and five diesel) and, even a hybrid option! Even the infotainment display is slightly unique, as it's mounted portrait instead of landscape. Find out more about the new Renault Scenic before it hits the market in our brand new 4k video. Will you be purchasing this family friendly MPV?

So there is a huge sliding glove box, just like the Captur. except that when Renault converted the car to right-hand drive, the glove box shrunk to the size of a medium jiffy bag. I suspect that the new Scenic will suffer the same problem. A tiny glove box in a family car is unacceptable. Also I had a first-gen Scenic and the seats folded individually and could be removed. The latest one shows that when the seats are folded down, you may have a flat load area but there's not much volume as the seats take up so much room. No car manufacturer seems to make a truly versatile MPV any more where the seats can be removed to create a small van

Too much style over substance. Have the Mark 3 Scenic at the moment but this has a much smaller boot (no good for dog and shopping, and the 60/40 seat split is no good for 3 teenagers as they can't adjust their own seats. Plus they're lower than in the Mark 3 so no good for long journeys for tall teenagers as their knees under their chins. All in all a disappointment as all a consequence of unnecessary sloping roof styling IMO. Electronic fold down seating a gimmick too as I fold the seats down about once a month max. Would be much more useful to have an electronic, handsfree self closing tailgate like better VW rival.

A good 7 seat MPV should be ideally capable of taking 7 adults in reasonable comfort and still have room for their things behind the third row. This Grand Scenic isn't worthy of that requirement, as it can't comfortably accommodate adults third row. When Renault first introduced the Grand Espace in Mk2 and Mk3 guise, it was perfectly capable of taking adults in third row and it still had good room for carrying things. Since the new model in 2003 and upwards, things haven't kept that to that essential practicality need in the Renault Grand Espace and Renault Grand Scenic which improved the Mk 2 and Mk 3 Grand Espace.

The interior look is great to my eyes. It is annoying that the glove drawer isn't present in uk spec though. It also probably needs a more powerful petrol option than the 1. 2 for the Grand version. I applaud Renault for caring about styling: these things matter every bit as much as prosaic functionality to people who can only afford one car. VW Touran gets praised by lazy journalists who'd never buy one for themselves in a million years, I suspect

So is this the future? Unsporty small cars being fitted with range rover sized wheels in an attempt to make them look cooler? How long until you can get 20 inch rims on a Kia ceed or Fiat Panda?
Ironically I think that my Golf would have been better with smaller 17 inch wheels rather than the 18 inch ones it comes with as standard. Giant over compensating wheels for giant over compensating cars makes more sense.

I kind of like it although compared to a Grand C4 it's a bit safe inside - better storage by the looks of it though. A 60: 40 seat split in an MPV from the company that pretty much invented the idea of 3 separate 2 row seats? That's an odd design choice. Also annoying for people with 3 small kids and needing to fit car seats. I mean who else is this car for exactly?

Great video as always, Mat. I must be a snob because I would never buy a French MPV for my kids. Touran/Sharan for the budget option (and really for a 5+ family they're all the car you'll ever need, or XC90/Model X in case I win the lotto. Or even the derpy yet lovable BMW X5 - actually, what do you think about it as a 7-seater?

leather steering wheel only on the signature option? cup holders small and can't be used when console fully forward. the glove 'drawer' box has a narrow opening and the 60/40 split means moving two seats to access the back row. No full curtain airbags and it's 5- NCAP. Expensive too

The glove compartment is huge because it is a LHD model. Will it be the same for RHD cars too? It is never understood why only French made cars still stubbornly refused to relocate the fuseboxes for RHD models to make the glove compartment the same size as LHD ones.

As you may expect my Renault has had ongoing -electrical issues-
Took it to Renault dealer who said they would not look at electrical problems on cars over 10yrs old even though it is their own car. I will never buy a Renault again - ever!
