As far as the fuel economy goes. A lot of it has to do with -engine break in period- when new from the factory. There's two methods to break in a reciprocating engine. There's the -Hard Break in method- and the -easy break in method-. The Hard Break in is a lot easier to do and doesn't take as long however you will get bad fuel economy for the life of the engine. The easy break in takes a lot longer, more miles, more effort, skill and knowledge however you will get the best possible gas mileage for the life of the engine given that all your oil changes are on time. The down side to the easy break in method is that every once in a long while this type of break in will cause the brand new engine to suffer catastrophic mechanical failure if it wasn't made right at the factory. Which is all covered under the factory warranty anyway. My point is that this particular VW UP that Matt is test driving in this video might of got the -hard break in method- and that's why the fuel economy isn't as good. It's possible since it is a turbocharged engine and maybe the first ones who drove it before Matt had a lead foot from the excitement of trying it out

42 miles per gallon is rubbish. You weren't even trying to get good milage then.
I am currently trading in an Up! Highline from 2013 and my daily commute is 37 miles to and from work with 95% highway.
I can manage to do a-by-system-indicated 4. 4l/100km as a tank average, which I believes translates to 66mpg. Sure don't drive at 80mph, but I can still manage this while driving 70mph.
I manage between 700-800km's on a single 35 litre tank.
This translates to 430 - 500 miles on a 9. 24 gallon tank.
I did the calculation myself instead of letting the slightly optimistic tripcomputer doing it.
My last result was 738km's on 35 litre tank, I pretty much drained it fully. It took 34. 80 liters to fill it again.
That works down to 4. 7 liters per 100km or. EXACTLY 60mpg haha!
Pretty economical.

I like your Car Wow tests apart from this. They say I should get X MPH but I am actually getting Y MPG.
But why do you often look at the computer's fuel usage just after doing an acceleration test or driving quite hard? That is not how people drive if they are looking for economy in real life! I can easily get an indicated 60 MPG driving carefully or an indicated 25 MPG if I put my foot down in the same car. I think you need to do better in this respect i. e. report on economy when driving 'normally' Vs driving economically Vs driving hard. Is that not fair?

Best car I ever owned.
Tuned the 60HP version to 75HP and it revs very enthusiastic in the limiter at 60MPH. Still prefer free revving NA engines.
EIBACH springs, less flexible rubber (Audi TT) in the steering, 195 sport tires, Focal Combo speakers, and you really have a fantastic little car. Drove 148. 000km's now. Maintenance: -600. In total, excluding a set of tires and brake disks (unbalance) of -80, - and half an hour of work and tuning of course. Roundabout fast car killer. Almost as much fun as my MX5, nothing beats RWD. More fun than my Golf GTI.

The Up (and its sisters) are head and shoulders above any other car in the class when it comes to build quality and drive. The 75ps engine pulls great in this little car and the 90ps gets it really shifting. The suspension and steering are far more refined than you'd expect. I bought a top spec one for my daughter and I used to nick it for any short journey. Funky, cleverly designed, well built. Even giving it a bit. it always returned around 50mpg on short journeys. Brilliant little car.

I've had an up! about a year. Love it! (it has stop/start) Very Eco, and for its size very practical. When we camp as a family we take both cars as have a new shape polo too. All the camping stuff for 5 goes into the UP! with the seats down! (large 6 man tent and poles, all chairs, sleeping bags, blow up beds, cookers and gas and 2 tables. It's also great fun to drive. We are so happy with it on many levels.

My new 2018 Move Up 59hp, is the first petrol driven vehicle ive owned, where its possible to achieve the claimed fuel efficiency figures claimed by Volkswagen in everyday normal driving.
VW claim my car can achieve around 64mpg on the combined sycle, well i have achieved that figure, and even improved on it as well.
The car is superb on long journey's and is a great car to own,

It-s quite an expensive way to get a VW badge on the front of your car, you can buy a low mileage v10 turbo diesel phaeton with massaging front and rear seats for less, or a v8 Touareg or a v10 Touareg which will be dependable for years to come, is more luxurious and better in every way

About to go abroad and looking to book a car for 8 days. For 39 quid I have the option of a two door up or the two door seat Mii. For an extra Dover I Gould have a fiat 500. Bit I quite like the idea of having a tiny mother for a few days, and tear it around Tenerife.

6: 15 ''you can't get stop start with a 1 litre turbo engine'' Someone please explain this as I know nothing about cars and am worried I have to turn the engine off and on if I'm in slow moving traffic. Sorry if I sound like an idiot
