Volvo is the best looker by far. Cheap plastics as ever in the Merc, come on. Volvo has shot itself in the foot though, least practical:
Lowest payload weight
Lowest litre storage
No 40/20/40 split seats which the V70 had, strangely.
Sloping boot door, the V70 was vertical, better for storage and Volvos have always been famous for this.
No load cover storage.
In the US, the Merc comes standard with the 3rd row bench that Volvo was once famous for.
And I bet. no telescopic sunvisor when the sun is on your left flank which the V70 did not have either, come on Volvo.
That said, the Volvo is on another level first impressions and design wise. The Merc and 5 series are both based on 10+ year old core designs. The Volvo is a breath of fresh air.

The Volvo simply looks great - no question about it. I was recently faced with exactly this choice and, after a test drive, decided on the Mercedes.
I usually drive long distances (Autobahn) and the Volvo's engine is a cramp. Not only does it consume a good 2 litres more, the car just doesn't want to get going. The mediocre sound insulation didn't inspire enthusiasm either and the pointless touch controls ruled me out completely.
The BMW was too cramped and so I was fortunately stuck with the Mercedes.
I still find it strange that the E-Class with 340 hp consumes 2 litres less than the Volvo with its tortured 235 hp. In countries with speed limits it probably looks different, but even at low speeds the Volvo is just no fun.

I was actually test driving Volvo and BMW - the two are not comparable. Volvo is soft and slow, swings on corners. Its autonomous system (pilot) works only up to 140 km/h while bmws up to 210! Also BMW system works while Volvo bounces off the lines several times and falls out into neighbouring line and probably crashes into a rail by the road.
Also - you could get 550d with 400 hp and 760 nm and dynamic drive system removing all that fluffy feeling on the corners. night drive, laser beams and several other fantastic and unique solutions. I bought one and will get it soon.
The merc is bigger but I get one when I retire (providing they do sth with the dials)

Maybe the volvo gearbox is a bit slower to respond on everyday cars but I think it might be a good thing. If you not having a race car you really dont need a super kickdown gearbox. Its Quick enough. And because it slower it is smother and not a instant pressure on the gearbox which make them last incredible long. Many cars need to change their gearbox after a time, but I know lots of volvo cars that have driven over 400 000 km (216 000 miles)
Of course other cars can go that long with the same gearbox but I feel its more common for volvo. Mercedes is also long lasting cars althoug have falled back a little the past decade.

BMW looks good but it's built quality isn't quite as good as the other two competitors. Mercedes' quality is excellent but it looks quite conservative and the rear seems absolutely dull and unsophisticated. I recon Volvo's a kind of mix from the two other competitors, it looks beautiful and even more, it's well known as safe and reliable car brand. That's why I'd probably choose the V90.

I think the Mercedes has more control options than the BMW but the BMW gets commended for it?
Touchpad, scroll wheel, voice, trackpad. Just no touch controls. And the entire infotainment can be controlled hands on wheel
Im in the market for a E400 though so I might be partial?

I really don't understand why this type and exist tbh they are look ugly front and back look like not so proportional and what is the sense of extra Boot they ruined sedan look.
Either buy E class sedan or GLE what is this e terrain neither suv neither sedan its ugly i feel.

Mercedes is a very well built car, BMW and Audi are good too. But Volvo towers over German competitors in terms of longevity, seat comfort, ride quality, overall reliability, safety and technological features. Germany is strong, but not exactly Sweden.

Looking to buy between merc e350d and BMW 535d. 2014-2016. After driving both still can't decide which one. I was looking at Volvo XC70 also. Probably the most comfortable of all 3. But heard it has problems with electrics. So it was written off.

I just bought an E450 estate here in the US. I'd have gone for the BMW 5-series if they sold them here in the US. I love the E450 though. Tons of space and nice driving dynamics as long as one doesn't push it too much.
