BMW iX3 2021 review - a German Tesla Model Y?

This is BMW-s all-new, all-electric SUV, the iX3! Excited already? Well, you-ll have to hold your horses - it-s not going to be available until Summer 2021! However, we-ve been lucky enough to get our hands on a press car to show you just what you can expect from BMW-s all-new EV. When it comes to the design, you won-t be surprised to hear it doesn-t veer too far away from the regular X3. There are smatterings of blue across both the interior & exterior, along with a new grille (no need for the regular vents, after all) and a new bumper at the rear. On the inside, you-ll be glad to hear not too much has changed - a good thing, given how popular the regular X3 is! However, being a new car, it-s also been updated with the latest BMW infotainment system. In terms of performance, the iX3 is powered by a single, rear-mounted motor (that can produce 236hp and 400Nm of torque, along with an 80kWh battery pack. But can it outperform class-leaders like the Mercedes EQC & Audi e-tron?

Love this reviewers car reviews. He-s very funny and the humour throws light on many of the cars design faults with some perceptive comments. I hope Carwow are giving him a nice pay packet and perks. He-s doing a great job. BMW build excellent cars and don-t overlook the drive, comfort and handling, which BMW concentrates on perfecting in every vehicle they make. The problems for me are: 2 wheel drive which for the price should be all wheel drive, blue highlights which can be done away with, the empty space under the hood (which might be reserved for an all wheel drive later on, but for this model why not put a removable plastic container there for additional luggage) and the granny rocking chair noise when jumping the car with fast braking, and perhaps we don-t need the Interstellar movie reference interior sound effects. I won-t buy an electric car until they-re capable of going 1500km on single power up. I-m not joking! This must be achieved and when it happens, it-s goodbye finally to the petrol and diesel motor car.

Another good test from Matt. I think he takes things as they come unlike others who have very preconceived ideas such as What Car for example who see the BMW badge and decide its wonderful before they drive it.
This shows where the BMW guys do not understand electric cars. This seems like a horseless carriage -its a petrol car adapted to an electric motor like a carriage without a horse. Tesla and Jaguar have got the idea -EVs are different animals and you have to redesign the car to fit. This means not shoehorning an electric motor into a petrol car. It will end up like the -horseless carriage- on the wrong side of history. In the meantime get a Model 3 or an I Pace -streets ahead.
Electric motors mean you can create a four wheel drive so much more effectively and yet they don't -oh dear oh dear. Back to the drawing board I suggest!

I'm quite disappointed by this iX3 to be honest. It's way down on power and range compared to the EQC and e-tron and it's not even offering AWD. Why didn't BMW use the space in the front to install a second motor (and / or more batteries) to offer AWD and more range? At least as an option, that would've been nice.
The only good thing is it's price. Over here in Germany, it's pretty much fully loaded as standard. Quite the opposite for the EQC and even more so for the e-tron. Spec up an e-tron and you're looking at a 100k price-tag easily. That's -30k more than you'll have to pay for this iX3 and -20k more than an EQC.

-carwow Early days when Auto start and stop was introduced on cars they affixed a green eco car sticker on the back of the car. This was to make sure people do not honk drivers when their car is starting. Now all cars have start / stop this logo has disappeared. Similarly the blue colors are to let other drivers know that they are responsible to the environment and to show that they care for the environment. This will go away in few years time when more and more car users change to electric.

I don-t think there is any comparison, the only selling point of a Tesla is the 0-60, and this is what they always push to sell their vehicles. The BMW is quite clearly a well built and proper piece of engineering with decades of knowledge experience behind the company. It-s quite clear with the arrival of electric cars from already well established brands, Tesla will more than likely not be the electric car of choice long term.

If/when I buy an electric car, it-ll be a car that has been designed and built from the ground up as- an electric car. It won-t be a car that was originally designed as a combustion engined vehicle. The front wasted space in this ix3 is just an example of the -forced issue- of -let-s make our cars electric! - I currently have the M40d X3 but there-s no way I-d entertain this half hearted concoction.

BMW did a mercedes. Just that this is even worse than the EQC, the EQC was atleast halfways thought out before they made it and is just -bad- as a BEV this thing is freakin horrible in every way imaginable. Hopefully it will be a colossal failure, the ID4, Model Y, Mach E, EQC (which isnt even a X3 competitor, its a X5 competitor) ETC are so much better than this and most of them are also cheaper.

I just test drove the ix3, and wt. The handling was crap, from 45-50 mph in felt unsafe like it was loosing traction. Felt like a Dacia Sandero. The normal X3 I would easily drive 120 mph on the same ride without being scared. Anyone else have this experience? I was so surprised, BMW is handling but the Ix3 handling was -.

Jonny Smith did a really great review of this and posed an interesting point; that BMW had an opportunity here to totally redefine the X platform for the electric era and didn-t. So this will be dated at launch compared to rival brands. Go watch that for a more well-rounded view on this new car.

I'd normally agree that the shoutiness of the blue is unecessary and I do feel that way for the interior, but I think it is necessary to do it on the outside to help bring that cool factor that tesla had cornered at the moment
