I've always been into cars. Growing up, I remember, whenever I got enough money to buy Autocar magazine or one of the others, one of the biggest complaints of motoring journalists then was too many buttons in cars.
I remember the W220 Mercedes S-Class was especially criticised. It had a complete phone keypad with physical buttons and individual physical buttons for all the other controls (seat adjustment, ESP, ADS, level control, rear seat head restraints, hazards, central locking etc. They called it too cluttered, too distracting, unbecoming of a Mercedes! Japanese looking (Japanese cars were the cheap ones back then. I think the W220 was the 'peak button' era in a car.
Now that manufacturers are doing screens to declutter car interiors, motoring journalists are again complaining. It's interesting to see what the trends will be in the future.

These changes with going electric are just happening because of a group of people called the WEF decided for us that's what they want. I never even elected these people and they're doing everything sneaky behind our backs! At the most I think Hybrid is ok, that makes sense but 100% electric, no thank you! Just look at the Nebraska, huge solar farm destroyed by hail! Imagine this happening, or another solar flare from the sun that screwed up all kinds of things, Quebec Canada got the worst and it induced electricity into the power lines and fried a bunch of things. Something like that can bring the country to a halt! We can't let go of combustion engines. I want them to stop! WEF must stop!

It's already been said in the comments but the lack of buttons and display dials needs to stop, it's honestly dangerous to have a person constantly checking over to the infotainment system for feedback on speed, battery consumption, temperature etc. I'd go so far as to make it a legal requirement on safety grounds. Also, new Model 3 Tesla removing paddles for indicator, wipers etc. is just another level of madness. It completely rules them out as an option for me.

Lack of physical buttons is the worst trend right now and it seems to be getting worse. Cost saving aka penny pinching disguised as cutting edge!
I consider it a safety issue to have to faff around touchscreen menus for important functions that are frequently used. Easy to use buttons and knobs please! And if a manufacturer wants to differentiate they should use premium engineering and materials for the controls instead of getting rid of them altogether.

For some reason some companies feel like less features is better. Like phone companies that don't include the charger in the box but still charge you like if they did.
In terms of performance, well it's the whole benefit of electric cars right? The instant power and torque. The EV6 GT is a performance version, not a base version. But yes, a lot of people should not be allowed to drive a 300HP+ machine when they cant even drive a 75HP version.

Central Speedo not a problem for anyone who learned to drive in an Austin Mini.
Charging access should be behind a hinged rear number plate (like on the old Ford Consul Classic.
I completely agree that electric cars are too fast and too quick. Just imagine what kind of hell will be let loose when all the boy racers buy up cheap used EVs. Also the makers could probably trade a bit of performance for added range and maybe a cost reduction.

The trend I want stopping before it gets too far is light strips on electric cars.
I know technically it takes fuel to charge the battery and put your lights on with a normal car but having extra electric lights on an electric car feels like using oil lamps for headlights for a petrol car, I'd rather have the energy to travel than use it for a mono brow over my boot

Dear Matt you are spot on with this video. I couldn't agree more. I really miss the interiors with a million buttons. I just knew where everything was and what did it do. I also agree with the outrageous horsepower that comes with the electric cars that comes with a lot of energy consumption and battery wear and of course the much higher risk of accident.

Fantastic Matt! You have brought up the exact points, which were burning me down over the last few years. what has gone wrong with the designers? Why can't they design simple elegant looking Dream machines we aspired right from our childhood! Give us back our dreams, aspirations. today we are loosing them over design, technology and choice of fuel.

I like when the car manufacturers give the designers more freedom to work. I believe we should give an opportunity to some bold innovative ideas of design. Yes, many of them will not look good. but we can learn from those mistakes in order to improve.
Chinese industry does that. and they adapt really fast after committing errors.

Screens that protrude out from the dash and have an inch thick bezel around them. To not elegantly incorporate them into the dash and slap a cheap 2010 looking tablet on the dash screams of lazy design! Only BMW can get away with it nowadays. Also I don't need 20 different sensors pinging every 5 seconds to warn me about something.

But there's a catch with those Big Rims. They're just waiting to get damaged one day because they're so close to the ground.
Coupled with some worse performance with stuff like increasing road noise inside the cabin, your fuel/battery efficiency drop, and the ride just won't be as comfortable as those using smaller rims.

While the Polestar 2 has an instrument cluster in front of the driver, they had to place the speedometer in the bottom left. This means that every time you are turning to the right you cannot see what speed you are doing. It is hopeless! Much worse than Model 3/Y have speed in the center where you can always see it.

9: 27 never thought I would agree with this, but those ev's are getting to powerful. I recently drove a mustang mach e gt and that car just had to much power. It was always spinning it front wheels when putting my foot down and the car didn't croner well wich made the amount of power just dangerous.

I agree with Matt, why do family cars/electric cars that are not in the SPORT genre have to have more power than supercars? Why isn't that huge COST used for other car features and equipment?
We buy regular sedans or SUVs or regular electric cars for comfortable city driving, not for speeding

They muffle new cars because studies show noise pollution is another health factor, a social insentive you seemed to overlook whereas drift mode is frowned upon because you can t legally use it anywhere. If loud exhaust isn t comparable to drift mode for that matter, I don t know what is

One mech once said: today you do not need to know how screwdriver works, you need to know computers and walk around with portable one. Modern cars, you can't even see if you need to change the oil without electricity and dashboard that malfunctioning easily.

I remember when EU banned Rolls-Royce having an illuminated Spirit of Ecstasy. Just 3 years ago. All in the name of the light pollution prevention. Seems they have no issue with local and Chinese brands doing crazy stuff now.

6: 20 yesterday I unfortunately overlooked a massive pothole since it was dark and raining. I can thell you that if I were driving a bigger rim that rim would have been toast. Luckily the big sidewall on my tires saved my ass.

Why not integrate the screens into the dash bord? Why touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel? Why so intrusive voice assistance? Dont't forget about the optional IWC digital watch, in the EQE instead of a real watch.
