New Tesla Model 3 v BYD Seal: Ultimate review!

BYD hit the headlines recently as it overtook Tesla for the most electric cars sold in Q4 2023. The question is, which of these EV manufacturers makes the best electric saloon - Tesla with the Model 3, or BYD with the Seal Well for starters, let’s check out the design. This may be the new Tesla Model 3, but it hasn’t changed a whole lot since the previous edition. There’s a new front & rear bumper, along with a few minor design tweaks, but otherwise, the car looks pretty similar at the front and the rear. Along the side, the car is pretty much identical, apart from a set of new alloy wheel designs! The BYD is also pretty tidy, although we are getting a few Tesla vibes from the design. Creases along the side help it stand out, and there are some pretty smart fins at the bottom of the rear doors. Otherwise, though, both cars are fairly similar when it comes to their look and design. Take a step inside, and you’ll find more of the same! Both cars come with a huge 15-inch screen stuck to the middle of the dash, and these are used to control pretty much all the features in either car! However, there are a few features that differentiate the BYD from the Tesla. Not only does it have a normal drive mode selector, but it also comes with traditional indicator stalks! In the Tesla, you have to select drive mode through the screen, and you need to indicate with buttons on the steering wheel. The BYD is also the only car out of the two to come with both a digital dial and a heads-up display. Everything in the Tesla is housed in the infotainment screen. When it comes to the price, the two are once again pretty evenly matched. The single motor editions of the Tesla and BYD start at around 40, 000 and 45, 000 respectively, but when you look at the dual motor editions, expect to spend around 50, 000 for the Tesla, and just under 49, 000 for the BYD!

If the BYD is able to use the Tesla charging stations like some electric cars and has good dealership services, as well as reliability. Then I'd go for the BYD mainly cause the parking segment showed me that the Gear Selection in the Tesla would eventually make me absolutely HATE driving the Model 3. I don't wanna accidentally rear end someone or drive into them cause the car didn't properly register my gear input for going forward or backwards. On top of that. I don't wanna side eye my mega screen everytime I wanna see how fast I'm going or check on things that should be on the heads up display or driver's gauge cluster.

Great review as always, but not totally fair. Tesla has had several years to correct and build its software, where as BYD is a new car and I am sure they will do major improvements and additions as time goes on and comments from owners. Different tyres make a big difference, both cars should have had the same tyres for the comparison. I am sure the Tesla is a good car, but as other reviews on the new Tesla have pointed out having the indicators as buttons could cause a safety issue like the swipe up and down for forward and reverse as demonstrated in the parking part of the video.

BYD's agressive market strategy is defenitely getting them some attention. Even though they dont have a strong corporate identity, the vehicles offer a lot for the money. Here in Brasil theyre becoming the reference for EV's, while Tesla isnt even available here. Still, im scheptical and dont really fall for these new chinese companies easily, reliability being the biggest concern.

The simple way Tesla handles charging is a big deal. I’ve done a few long distance trips with a byd and most of what I was doing was trying to figure out where to find charging stations. I also had to install 5 apps on my phone to try to get charging networks. There isn’t a unified app with every charging station in Europe.

Very very good observation my 2015 Toyota Prius have a heads up display I don't know why Tesla don't want to put the heads up display and Android auto and apple car play why Mr eleon does it cost more to do so why why Why why let's see licensing that could be it either why why why why don't tell me no lame excuse Mr Elon

Although I'm probably not buying an electric car for a while, owing to the fact I hardly use the one I've got, I take a keen interest. I suspect in 10 years or so these cars will seem pretty primitive, at least in terms of propulsion and especially battery.
I will continue to watch with interest.

As a current M3P owner, i just eagerly await the new version being announced. Could never go back to acceleration beyond low 3s to 60mph. How could i live with being so poor after having such riches etc. come on Elon, give us dual MS Plaid motors, bucket seats and 650 bhp and then take my money!

Parking these looks hell of a scary thing to do, every small inch forward or back seems to be a sudden lurch in either direction compared to a manual ICE car where you can easily move slowly, not sure how it is for auto but I guess the throttle input can be gently managed to.

I don’t understand why cars have to have 500 horsepower. I get it if you want a fast car but anyone wanting a car with 500 horsepower had to buy a sport car or even super car not that long ago. If my mother bought one of these cars she would end up killing herself.

I always wonder why Carwow never talk about charging costs. public charging is so expensive in the UK (Around 85P per KWH) - tesla superchargers cost around 45P Per KWH - this is a massive consideration for any potential EV buyer but never gets a mention

Matt, I think a good review/comparrison for us Yanks (or whatever ya call us) across the pond would be the new rear wheel drive Model 3 vs. a Chevy Bolt because they have a very different price point but are similar when it comes to range and quickness.

nah Tesla should not even be allowed to sell just bcoz they don't have the heads-up speed display. this is a life and death feature. also, the swepe to change gear feature is disgusting. i cannot imagine using that for more than a few days
reply

Who is it these designers use for research. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like having storks for indicating and a normal gear stick. You can’t use your phone in a vehicle but it’s ok to take your eye off the road to change heater settings

The lack of buttons in most cars now means voice control is more of a necessary feature. I use mine in my Volvo in preference to screen buttons.
Matt never seems to even mention this feature. It should IMHO be a standard feature in testing.

give me a pre-facelift model 3 exterior & steering wheel/stalks/gear lever, model 3 highland interior & platform, carplay, alcantara or velour seats, framed windows, model y hatchback, parking assistant and the ability to coast and i’m in.

Tesla is an AI taxi manufacturer that sells cars to the public to develop it's self driving SW. That's why they're so plain with no features inside. The future is no private car ownership, you just summon one via an app when you need one.

Bro i cant believe thats the new tesla model 3. They are joking right It looks like something the biggest average joe in the world would drive in. Looks like an AI generated car. Still no HUD or gauge clusters god what a dull car!

Watching you drive fast around the track in complete silence is super odd. As a viewer, no sense of the speed at all. I have model 3 LR, and it is fantastic, and the speed is awesome. It just does not translate good to the screen.

People testing sound of doors closing will always be funny to me: Are there really people who care about that As long as the rain doesn't get in, I'm good. Same for "quality of materials inside": I want a comfy seat, that's it.

EV can’t be best not even good. It’s a scam and no one is buying it unless u want to sponsor car company development department. Look what Hertz has done. They sold all they EV cars and buying combustion engine cars again.
