Toyota C-HR review: The best-looking car of 2024!

Toyota has revamped this small crossover SUV, and Mat’s about to find out if it can compete with class leaders like the Volkswagen T-Roc and Ford Puma. When it comes to the design, the C-HR has had an overhaul and we think it looks great! It now comes with a sporty & futuristic design, from the spoiler effect with the rear lights through to the sleek & slim headlights at the front. The sloping roofline helps add to the sporty looks, and we’re happy to say there aren’t any fake exhausts or vents to be found. Step inside and the high-quality feel continues. There are soft-touch materials high up on the doors and the dash, and it’s also contoured to help it stand out a bit more. All but the entry-level cars get a big infotainment screen, and there’s also a set of digital dials for the driver. We’re also very happy that Toyota has left some physical climate control buttons, rather than including everything on the infotainment screen. There is a choice of two self-charging hybrid C-HRs. One comes with a 1. 8-litre petrol engine that can produce 140hp, and the other comes with a 2-litre petrol engine that can put down 197hp. There’s also a plug-in hybrid model, and this also comes with a 2-litre petrol and it can produce 223hp. The price range kicks off at 31, 000, rising to around 43, 000 for the top-of-the-range C-HR. So is it worth it! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

I thought it was a pretty awesome package I actually considered until I saw the absolute snail pace 0-60. No way I can drive that. It's like 3 times slower than a quick-to-me car. Might as well take a nap before you get ot highway speed. Wow
I know it's that kind of car, but this seems like the Toyota/Lexus theme. It's frustrating because otherwise I would get one. Many of their models look sporty and fast but they're so slow, from Corolla and Camry, Lexus sedans and SUVs, all the way to the LC500.

In America when searching for this car on the Toyota site we get. With 2022 being its last model year, C-HR is now discontinued. To keep you heading toward new adventures, the compact and stylish, similarly sized Corolla Cross offers versatile driving. Meanwhile, the ever-popular RAV4, with its comfortable and nimble sizing, helps you take more trips. As you plot out your next destination, you’ll notice that these agile rides truly provide the total package for your needs.

I havw been driving a 2012 Prius Gen. 3 for 11 1/2 years and the CVT Gear Box has never bothered me.
I haven't driven a newer version of the power train, but people say it has become even way better than before, so it won't bother me in the least!
People seem to think normal non hybrid gas vehicles don't make any sound at all if you accelerate hard.
Great car no doubt, but Toyota needs to come down with the prices if they want to sell any of these!

Sorry, I think it's really ugly - it's such a mess of hard angles and curves, the rear lights are particularly unpleasant. GOOD WORK TOYOTA though on putting proper buttons in for important controls. Not a fan of the bloody great screen sticking up, they should sink them into the dash but everyone is moving away from that and towards 'cheap samsung clone from amiexpress stuck to the dash on a plastic mount'. They're all doing it, please stop: (

You sure need those big 19'' wheels on a car that doesn't even do 100 mph! :) I don't get this type of car. They're neither SUV, neither hatchback; neither fast, but neither fuel efficient (real world mpg on one of these babies will blow your mind); neither practical, but neither stylish. These are cars for people who know nothing about cars, the exact same kind of people that BMW asked when they decided to do the new 1-series with front wheel drive.

We know you don't like CVT Gearboxes, you don't have to keep telling us, nor flooring the accelerator to make the engine rev up and then make a funny face at the camera. I have a CVT on my car and its excellent. If you drive like Stirling Moss then a Toyota is not for you. I find your reviews are getting a tad childish now.

Cute to see toyota try their last tricks before they get utterly destroyed by tesla and BYD
Also the enthusiasm about this car is absolutely fake and paid.
You got to be kidding me to enthusiastically talk about lane keep assist and pretend it is something special.
Not saving settings is absolutely ridiculous.

Why don't car reviewers like Matt or Doug review older cars when there are no new ones. Like in hell with it today we're gonna review a 67 Mustang or a 96 Escort or a 70 Alfa Romeo. I'd love those videos and I know I'm not the only one, plus a ton of people would be willing to give their cars for reviews

One of the first things he said is that it looks sporty. When did the definition of sporty become fat, tall and angular. Modern cars are a total mess design wise and the fundamentals are being lost within the noise of technological advantages. The visual perception of things is now too powerful

Mat sometimes the brakes can feel a bit grabby but not in this car Watson failed to mention the rear window often fills with condensation in these cars even with the climate control and air conditioning on. That CVT moo is beyond irritating and ruins what looks like a great car.
reply

Although might have an interesting design, is a pointless fat car An SUV/crossover where only the front passengers are comfortable. Rented one in Germany and my dearest family members hated it back there, tiny window, dark, tight the boot is also so small for such big footprint.
reply

They really lost me at Crossover with poor boot, lots of livability problems and a rear row reminiscent of a bomb shelter. The price is just an insult on top of all that. Why does this exist when Prius and Corolla already exist And why can a VW Polo fully replace this 40k car
reply

it was interesting how some of camera lenses selected worked for the car, but distorted you face mattwatson. Regarding the car, I like the style, just wish it was a little bigger. Oh, and good idea to have the airbrakes out to steady the car before the 0-60 run; )
reply

I'm tall so those non ergonomic doors and dash did it for me. And even though I wouldn't spent time in the rear, I'm fully aware of back seat comfort. Its just too claustrophobic unless you're single or just graduated college. The I wouldn't mind trading comfort for style.
reply

I was torn between this and a 2nd hand Mercedes GLA. I test-drove both. After some deliberation about build quality, performance, service, parts, and my wants and needs, I ended up choosing the Mercedes. Sorry, Toyota, this isn't worth the money you are asking!
reply

Isn't time to end this CVT transmission rant It's already established in the marked and it will never go away, unless the media people like you are doing it just for fun it's just dumb.
I'm a car guy and this never bothered me and it will never will.

They should have increased the wheelbase on this by 2 inches to improve rear seat space they need to do the same with the next gen RAV4 so the two don’t overlap. The Corolla Cross could have also done with being based on the sedan wheelbase not the hatch
reply

Don’t like the combination of an old-school instrument module and the square screen. One or the other please. How about a small car-version of the Vision Pro that would put needed info in the drivers field of view like on modern fighter aircraft
reply

Has the same flaws as the previous model: looks big, it's actually smaller than the hatchback counterpart. Noone in their right mind would buy one, but then I see a lot of crossovers and SUVs on the streets so people will surely purchase them.
reply

$40K USD for a base model CHR That's a big no-go! Why get the smaller, less horsepower CHR when you can get a RAV4 hybrid for the same or cheaper price
Toyota grossly mispriced the CHR. Another death knell for the poor CHR.
