I worked at a tire store during the Firestone recall. People were told to get a new set of tires no matter how worn they were. People were flooding the shop with explorers to replace the Firestones. I never saw one defective tire while I was replacing them. Even ones with hardly any tread left. This was one of the biggest political corporation battles ever. If you inflated your tires to 26 psi now your tire pressure monitoring systems would be screaming at you. This was the ultimate show of who put more money into propaganda. well besides that Adolf A-hole. I would buy a firestone tire any day before the explorer of that generation. Im glad I worked in the industry during this period, it was so interesting to watch the progression of the recall and the implementation of it. I really believe Firestone/Bridgestone got completely screwed on this one. They make some of the best tires on the market.

I'm really glad you guys brought up the Ford and Firestone debacle, such a huge part of the Explorer's history. Ford really screwed overr Firestone who was truly innocent in the whole matter. I had those same Firestone Wilderness tires on my Tahoe and never had an issue. In fact, no other vehicle was having tread separation with the exact same tire that the Explorer was running. That's what happens when you constantly run low tire pressure from day one and image when you start off with low tire pressure to begin with, then let your tires naturally go lower before you notice to fill it. And with lower pressure you have more friction which adds more heat, essentially cooking the tires to the point of failure. Poor Firestone.

I myself own a 1997 ford explorer sport 2 Door. Father owns a 2002 ford explorer sport Trac. 4. 0L V6 in the 1997. Same engine but with a turbo In the 2002. My baby survived so many different types of abuse over the years including the engine running without coolant for half an hour (at least) in the winter when the antifreeze valve blew. (Battery died, got it boosted, left it running when my father (when he owned her) went in to do about 1 hour of paperwork. Came out to a smoking engine) Engine survived with minimal damage (as what can be expected) and is still running strong today on the same engine. I love her so much. She ain't much, she's got her flaws, but she's mine. I've been waiting for this.

The Explorer exposed the SUV audience for what they were. Instead of making an off-road truck that could be used as a suburban vehicle, Ford essentially put a Country Squire body on an Aerostar van chassis and pretended it was a truck. And they sold millions, because soccer moms wanted to pretend they weren't soccer moms and gas was cheap. The same crew is still around today and still spending billions on millions of pretend off-roaders. Our local Jeep lot can't keep Trailhawk Cherokees and Renegades in stock because, hey it snows more than 3 inches once a year here on average But women buy them right and left because they may decide to conquer the Rubicon one day in a FIAT Panda with red tow hooks

God I miss my explorer. 1997 5. 0L ford explorer xlt, it had leather seats and it was mint which says a lot because it was a daily driver and I live up north. It didn't stick out but it was an off road beast and compared to other explorers up here, it was the nicest explore you would see in years. to bad I rolled it several times. My dumb ass didn't even reach 160, 000 miles; . The worst part was I didnt even get to keep the suv, the body was Fubar but the engine was okay and I could have sold the parts to a foxbody owner and paid off the tow cost. Some day I'll get another dark red 97 explorer xlt, just not anytime soon.

When I was in high school I had a 2001 jeep Cherokee with the 4. 0 straight 6 and a 4 speed automatic it wasn't especially fast but when I was 16 I thought it was the fastest thing in the world and a kid I knew had a 4. 0 5 speed 2 door explorer he thought it was the fastest thing ever and towards the end of the 11th grade we finally raced and my jeep destroyed the explorer basically because my jeep had 30 more hp and was 1, 000lbs lighter but a few months later he wrecked his explorer and I bought the 3. 73 posi rear end out of it high school was fun and I still have my Cherokee

I drive a 99 Eddie Bauer Explorer and it makes total sense now why my dad told me years ago to be gentle with it. He told me it will flip and roll and I was like Yea maybe on ice or snow or lots of water, but it's fine. It started to feel a little flippy a couple years ago, enough for me to take it more gently, but now I'm definitely gonna be a lot more gentle. I had no idea that the 2nd gen explorers had widespread issues of flipping and rolling. Good to know, thanks Donut

Makes you think, how many people suck at driving? I bet if people paid attention, used common sense, and didn't drive at unreasonable speeds, there would have been only a fraction of the rollovers. I wouldnt be so quick to blame Ford, because normally people dont slalom their family SUV'S on a typical commute, nothing is rollover proof. Have you seen today's Ford Econoline, and Sprinter Van's and other similar vehicles? They're way taller and skinnier.

i dont really like how he says the 3rd and 4th gen explorers were basic when the 5th gen was literally a car lmao. it wasnt even an suv anymore let alone a real explorer. the 4th gen v8 has about 300hp and 300lb-ft of torque, it moves pretty damn well. and sounds amazing when you put your foot into it. i have one and id definitely rather have a real truck then a tall car lol

Ford explorer: First 4 door family suv with offroad capabilities? IH Travel-all and Jeep Grand Wagoneer for starters. Maybe we throw the Land Rover and Land Cruiser, since they dwarf the explorer in sales and longevity. So, perhaps you should state that the explorer was the most recent game changer. except that it's not. Land Cruiser and Land Rover are still around.
