BTW the M5 had a MK3 navsystem. The E46 could have had a 16: 1 radio head unit like the M5 but somebody cheaped out on this option. There was a later model called MK4 which worked with CDs and DVDs as well and it could display the track in a more modern TomTom way and not just a 2D top view only. You could also throw out the CD changer and put any MP3 adapter instead of it into the system while maintaining all MFL and radio controls intact not even knowing you had changed something thus keeping everything still looking and working OEM. Nowadays you can also change the whole old radio in both cars for a newer android one which again will add more features and extras to your central unit while still maintaining all the MFL and other controls leaving it still in OEM look and feel. Both models were a perfect pinnacle of an era and since the design pretty much does not age at all (or just very slowly) you can add a small bit here and there each time you want to fresh up the look of your car. or leave it like it is. Both will work great. And they both will eat your shoes in terms of maintenance, but the M5 will eat even your socks: D

Ive had an idea of making a car brand that would make simple, yet fun and reliable cars since ive gotten into cars a bit more. Most of todays cars are oriented towars being as safe, electronic, fuel efficient and high tech as possible. but that takes away quite a lot of fun for drivers that want their car to be fun in the way they want it to be, by that i mean they would control it and feel in controll instead of some electronic components taking controll. I would make a car that would have a manual transmition, a handbrake that would require some strenght to be activated (like the ones in the good olden days, a steering wheel, directly connected to the wheels and simply being easy to work on without needing a car specific mechanic to do it. Hell, it might even have the steelies instead of some special, exotic looking wheels. This is what i would be keen on to own

Doug, youre getting way too carried away with your narcissism and generalizations of E46 M3 owners. You keep mentioning those who nodded them, ruined them because they would mod them cheaply and not put any money towards maintenance. I dont know how many E46 M3 owners you have known/met, but I know a lot of them. Most of them have theirs modded, and most of them also run very good and are super clean. I disagree with your analysis of a bone stock E46 M3 being its best version. You havent ridden in a clean modded one then, because when modded right, it makes the E46 M3 waaaaaaay better in every single way. Mod it right, keep up with maintenance, and its an incredible car.

last 15 years has brought to cars more electronics in handling, many many gimmics, some enhanced security features and mainly economy. Suspension and chassis wise I think we will not see anything better anymore than the 2000-2010 cars since now you have electronics to do all the job that the suspension would. Finally all cars from our age will not leave for 15 or 20 years. I dont think that any electronic device will live for that long, and now a new car without the screens and electronics is almost unusable.

The top of the range cars always go up in value. Just like the Mercedes Benz S Class 500. 10 years ago they were like 1000, - to 6000, - Nowadays they dont go for under 25000, - But remember these kind of cars also need the best maintenance. And for a masserati 3200GT one trip to the dealership for maintenance will set you back 30000, - easy. So if you buy a Masserati 3200GT for only 30000, - which already is a lot of money of course then you still need to afford the maintenance.

I own a clean stock 2003 E46 M3 coupe SMG that I bought for 8. 5k. And I have a clean stock E39 525i with the M sport package that I grabbed for a little high price at 4k. The 5 series runs and drives perfect with it just finishing a 2k+ road trip down to Florida and back with no issues. My M3 is undergoing control arm replacements cause one of the bushings is toast. Still just a wear and tear item and the car runs perfect for a high mileage example. I just hope It'll stay like that.

I love the E39 M5 and always wanted one. I used to own an E39 335i (in manual too) and it was amazing. But the E46 M3 is one of the most amazing looking saloons/sedans ever. And as an owner of an E46 M3, they are so much more fun to drive on UK/EU roads. Lively cars. And the M5 ricing scene is just as big (percentage wise. They might not have been riced like US stereotypes suited to Fast & Furious films, but they all got fat wheels, rolled arches and go to stance meets.

They still make a car like these. A car where you can touch the passenger side door from the driver's seat, exterior dimensions are nice and small and horsepower is strong, but not insane and unusable. They just aren't M cars. It's the M235i/M240i. That machine performs like the older M cars. You only have to put up with modern technology, i. e. too much technology in my opinion.

They still make a car like these. I agree with you about the increasing value of the e46 m3. The 6 speed manual is far more desirable than the automatic SMG transmission. Yes it's a bit expensive to maintain however it's well worth keeping in pristine condition. The main reason I do not want to trade up is that this model does not have the multitude of chimes, warnings, and other idiot reminders all new cars have.

Dough you are very right in saying this. Here in South Africa old BMW performance cars are getting really expensive. For example we didn't get the E30 M3 but we got a custom 325is and 333i which was released to our market and 1 or 2 countries in Europe. Those cars are now ridiculously expensive if you can find them in the original condition they came out in.
