Here's Why Everyone Loves the Jeep Cherokee XJ

The Jeep Cherokee XJ is loved by car and SUV enthusiasts -- and everyone else. Today I'm reviewing a 2001 Jeep Cherokee to show you why the XJ Cherokee is so well-loved. largol33t1: True story: the Jeep 6 cylinder was so reliable that it would outlast supporting components. I had coolant system failure in mine after 11 years. Yes, 11 years. I've had a Dodge that couldn't even last half as long. Then an electrical component failed a few months later. I had a chat with the mechanic and he told me this was normal. Most of the stuff supplementing the engine will fail BEFORE the engine fails When I traded my Jeep in, I realized it had never gone to the shop for an engine repair. Not once in the 13 years it was in the family. We held on to the Jeep longer than any vehicle we owned or currently own. And not one but TWO Hondas owned by cousins have run into so many problems that they got rid of them. They didn't have the Hondas longer than 5-6 years My Jeep only let me down once and that was when the cooling system failed. But the mechanics told me I had missed a required overhaul for it anyway so I guess that barely counts. Other than that, the Jeep was much more reliable than any Honda or Toyota my family ever owned and we're talking newer models that came out after 1991The model you got your hands on is a heavily UPDATED version of the Cherokee Classic. Mine was the model before this so it had a push button to release the tailgate and the left stalk on the steering wheel was verry complicated as it also had the cruise control buttons and switches. It also had the interesting concave window sills, they looked like they had been stamped in with a huge metal press. And the hazard light switch was a KNOB located under the steering wheel at the 5: 00 position You pull it out to switch the hazards on. It looked ugly and stuck out like a bruised thumb.

Bs u can pull the ashtrays out if u have the pice that pops out that one is either missing it or the 2000 and 2001s dont have them but out of that body style XJ CHEROKEE 97to99 is the best years in that body style because the 00-01s have coil packs and bull shit low pinion front axels almost all 97to99s Ive owned have the 8. 25 rearend and high pinion dana30 so rides better with high pinions and the 4. 0 high outputs are the shit they get it on good for a suv Ive owned over 30plus Xjs I refuse to buy 2000/2001s they are junk and if u get a xj Cherokee classic there loaded leather seats heated seats overhead head unit with gas mileage compass garage door opener holder sunglasses holder they are the overall best suv made in lots of peoples opinions but if ur thinking bout buying one buy 97-99 body style if u want a little newer interior look and there the bestyears of that style and if u want the little older style Id stick with 94-96 personally I just like the 96s in those years cuz last of the body and they are built a lot better

Interesting fact: this is the more modern version of the XJ. I had a similar XJ but the dashobard was even more boxy, way more simpler and the shift stick was straight, not slightly bend towards the back. It also had chrome buttons for window control etcetcetc. so there is an even simpler XJ available: ) btw it was really tough. I bouht it used with 1 00 000 miles (US version in EU) and it was thirsty. 45L/100km just when using it as a regular city car. Offroad even more. We later figured out that a simple small fix in the engine (can't remember what it was today) made a significant change to 14L/100km without any sacrifice on power etc. We sold it only because we had no real use for the car in urban conditions and someone came along offering us a ridiculous ammount of money for it. It was fun back then and it was so simple that everything made fully sense. If I would have to get one again I would probably go for the V8 version since it would be a fun vehicle only.

Doug, you're WRONG about the gauges. What's unusual that they're actually better. Most cars today have no gauges for battery charge, engine temperature or oil pressure. I find that ridiculous because if the engine is about to overheat, you won't know until it's too late. I've seen the interior of a Ford Mustang and all it had was rpm, MPH and fuel level. That was it. Good luck trying to find out if you're overheating. PS, this vehicle is more common worldwide than you think. Need to brush up on your research. My Jeep was loaded with French-sourced parts. Looking in the engine bay, just about half of the warning and maintenance stickers were in English AND French. Most of the time, when I bought parts for it, the box said Made in France. And these Jeeps were found in Western Europe and Australia in the early 2000s so they're NOT as rare outside US shores as you think.

Doug, it irritates me a little that you obviously know quite a bit about the cars you review, but for some reason, you just don't mention it. All the way through this review, there were obvious answers to a lot of the things you said I don't know why. or they went cheap. You actually barely touch on any of the reasons you promise in the title. The attack angles front and rear which is why you don't have a huge compartment under the rear floor. The huge wheel wells that allow for nice big off-road wheels. The extreme flexing abilities. The ride height, and ground clearance. etc. You seem to know all these, your scores reflect it, as well as many of your small comments. Obviously the car was tuned for slow movement, and early power, for off-road use. Anyways, glad to see it still got a decent score - I love the XJ. A shame you couldn't take it off-road. :)

So I just got my XJ after looking for one in good shape for years. I was passing by my neighbors garage and there was always a covered car in his garage, well a few days ago the wind was crazy and it uncovered the beauty, a 1996 Jeep cherokee with 120k miles, him being the only owner and it was there because it wouldnt start. I told him if he was willing to sell it and he said, how much you got, I said i only have like a thousand, i was just kidding I had no shit. And he said, let me get the title, I had to get a loan to buy it lol, I pushed to my house, ( this vehicles are not heavy) I got it in, called a friend, turns out it was only the crankshaft sensor, It costs 60 bucks, i bought my friend a 6 pack. Now I have a really nice, impeccable jeep cherokee.

Had a 4. 0 L 2 doors for a while. Fun SUV. with pathetic brakes. The discs, only on the front were the size of a small European city car, drums on the back. At every service, I had to replace the brake discs as they were warped. A thing that I really liked was the Power switch, making the Jeep quite quick when racing other vehicles from standstills. Was good in sticky mud, with the right tyres, of course. In Belgium, it was also offered with a dramatically underpowered 2. 1L turbo diesel from Renault and that thing was slooooooww. A friend had one like that. an horror to drive

I gave this video a thumbs up during the video. Then I gave it a thumbs down after he started to rate it. I dont need this kind of negativity in my life. About 3/4 of my child hood my parents owned Jeep Cherokees and I absolutely loved them. My father and I even had a fatal crash in one and it saved our lives. I want to own one myself soon. Ive had a 2013 wrangler. It was cool, but I just always had a soft spot for these XJs.

My first new car was a '95 Cherokee Sport with a manual transmission. That thing could climb a wall. I drove it for 9 years, and about 180, 000 miles before I gave it to my little brother. I think it had about 250, 000 when he traded it in. It wasn't the most refined ride on the road, but it never left me stranded, and I never got it stuck. And It would literally plow snow with the front bumper.

You left off the fact that the car does a self diagnostics check, no need to take it to a shop to get scanned. Turn the key to on 3 times and leave it in the on position. The 10k price was wrong also. You can get those in good shape for 4500 bucks all day. I have had the 03 WJ for many years and it has outlasted my newer cars so I am still driving it and only it as of now. No need for anything else.
