Yaris (SCP10 and NCP13) owner here: Regarding the check engine light, a very common problem with the Yaris (especially with the SZ engines, but NZ don't seem to be immune either) is contamination on the MAF sensor that causes an in-spec failure (i. e. reporting values that are off but not enough for the ECU consider it an error) and usually a lean code (P0171. A bit of MAF/carburetor cleaner usually fixes it. Some people also report ignition coil failures, but those don't seem to be as common.
Also, the real performance version of the second-generation Yaris is the TS with a 1. 8-L 2ZR-FE making 98 kW, although I'm not sure whether those were available in Australia. 2ZR swaps have been done to non-TS Yarii (check out YarisWorld. com, there are threads about this. The 1. 5-L 1NZ-FE (77 to 81 kW depending on the market and year) was in the first-generation TS (also known as Echo RS in Australia, the second and third generations got it in some markets as options (here in CZ we AFAIK only had the 1. 0 1KR-FE and the 1. 3 2SZ-FE. Some markets also got the 1. 3 2NZ-FE and 1NR-FE and the 1. 6 4ZR-FE. One diesel engine was also available, the 1ND-TV (66 kW.
Fun fact: In 1997, Toyota introduced the Prius with the 1NZ-FXE (an Atkinson-cycle version of the 1NZ-FE. Some 22 years later, this engine is apparently STILL being produced and used in the Yaris Hybrid (the brochure doesn't say so, but the displacement, bore and stroke all check out.

In the US these were standard with the 1. 5 liter I own an 09' white 2 door NCP91 model. Still holding onto lots of new never even opened new parts. Best upgrade for the buck. upgrade the wheels to lightweight alloys. Recommend stock size. Second best upgrade lightweight crank pulley our at a minimum remove the rubber from the OEM steel one. Engine is internally balance so the rubber dampener is not needed. One of the parts I'm holding is a brand new TRD Limited slip differential for that transmission. We'd need to check fitment for right hand versus left hand drive. Best upgrade installed is a mid chassis brace. It removes 95% of body flex. Also 91 octane is a 3 to 5 HP gain. As always these motors run better with upgraded air box, true header verses stock manifold. And a TRD performance exhaust. (made by Borla if you were unaware. As my wife is drive that car now it has been removed. there were lots of lower kits back in the day. I went with D spec racing. fully adjustable in height and stock rebound. Oh! and check out the Yaris Cup videos. Yes this car had its own racing circuit for a few years until they moved over the rally circuit.

After watching the latest vid, I wanted to come back to check the price, currently in my local area on Kijiji (Canadian eBay Classifieds/Gumtree) the cheapest Yaris is a 2007 4 door manual trans hatch with 281k km for 2400 (about 1, 823. 04 USD/2, 632. 17 AUD) or best offer, the 2nd cheapest is a 2007 2 door manual trans base hatch with 235531km from a dealership & certified for 2998 (about 2, 277. 22 USD/3, 287. 31 AUD)+ tax (13%, only the 1. 5L 1NZ-FE was available here. Keep in mind though that the Yaris name wasn't used for the 1st gen (XP10, it was called the Echo. Cheapest Echo is a 2003 4 door manual trans sedan with 360k mostly highway km for 900 (about 683. 46 USD/986. 62 AUD) or best offer & needs rear subframe section as support rusted for rear axle bushings, next cheapest is a 2003 4 door auto trans sedan with 400k km for double the (1800(about 1368 USD/1, 972. 80 AUD) or best offer) & needs some work such as new gas tank installed & engine light on for minor stuff.

We bought the wrong shit! Hahahahaha
Yamaha 1000cc superbike engine in a Yaris! Huh?
Obviously easier said than done but what about using a Miata drivetrain (make it RWD, turn the engine/transmission 90degrees (could use the stock motorcycle fuel tank/fuel pump too, custom motorcycle adapter/drive shaft yoke (or something) utilizing the motorcycle transmission output shaft rather than a gear. Figure out a cable/or solid beam shifting system to utilize the manual lever action inside the cabin. Use the Miata brakes and so on, smaller wheels and tires for better acceleration.
IDK whaddya think? Madder than the mad hatter?

I'm so excited about this project. I have a 2008 Yaris hatchback 1. 5l and I've managed to convince my coworkers that it's cool, somehow. The best word to describe driving a yaris is hilarious. I have done a cold air intake, header, cat delete, 2 custom stainless exhaust and front and rear strut bars, so far. The looks people give me when they see this little shit box just take off and roar is so funny. I can't wait to see what you guys do to this car. They have some hidden potential.

The TS (SR) model doesn't exist in Aus? I live in Europe and I own one. It's 1. 8l dual vvti 135hp and its not the fastest car in the world but I love how it handles. It came with 17 alloys, it sist 8mm lower, a bit stiffer, a more direct steering, sporty seats and of course, a bodykit. Anyway idk why you guys hate the yaris so much, mine chopped a few bmw, especially on curvy roads

Similar platform a few other Toyota. One of them I have is Prius C which I've modified the handling bits. If you need advise on handling/chassis mods just drop a message! Only uploaded my n00b driving for the recent track day I went in Sepang Malaysia. Have better driving video but unfortunately not on my RaceChrono Pro. No more understeering & nose dive braking!

I have a 02 Yaris Verso (Funcargo) 1. 3L as a daily, I put 215 width 16 Falkens on it, and I smile way too much in that car while maintaining speed in roundabouts and intersections Also it's very easy to upset the chassi, which makes it hilarious in snow!
It's only feature is that it can be converted to a van in 1 minute.

Don't understand where all the Yaris hate is coming from. Anything from GM, FCA or even Ford I'd understand, but the Yaris is 100% nugget material. Large-ish nugget for sure, but still a nugget. I owned a four-door hatch back in 2003 and it was super fun smoking all the riced-out Civics.

I have a soul-sucking Yaris.
The check engine light is 9/10 excessive lean fuel trim from dirty throttle body (SHE WAS RUNNING LEAN, you could have owned that race.
The model has a reputation for it, and
theres not really anything else on it to go wrong lol.
