Well I have a base (S) 2017 VW Jetta sedan (manual transmision) that Ive racked up almost 70, 000 miles on. Obviously those are mostly highway miles as my commute was 65 miles each way for 17 months. It was made in Mexico. I bought the car on my brothers advice (hes an engineer at Intel & he & his peers are particular about cars. I knew Id blow thru the factory warranty but it came with a lifetime power train warranty supplied by the dealer - which is one of the reasons I bought it. It also had 38 inches of leg room in the back seat, got well over 40mpg on the highway (important because of my commute) yet went from 0 to 60 in less than 8 seconds. I have had no mechanical problems with the car as of yet. So far its been a truly great car. I hope that continues. VW has had quality problems in the past and thats why they have to have robust warranties. I didnt have time to test drive a bunch of cars - but I feel like I got a car with the economy of a subcompact, the room of a midsize, and the performance of a V-6. At some point the turbo will be an issue as they are complex & have a lot of moving parts, but so far the car has been really good. I cant imagine anything better - in fact the new one has slightly less leg room, doesnt have independent rear wheels, and isnt as good looking in my eyes - but if it otherwise runs as well as mine, Id probably still buy one if I was in the market now but preferably only after I had looked at everyone elses first.

A lot of vehicle longevity has to do with driving habits and quality of the build from the initial manufacturing process in my opinion. I had a 85 BMW 3 series with the 3. 0 inline six paired with 5speed manual paid 500 for it in Europe and drove it for 3+ years in the service. No rust. Good wheel alignment and so forth. Did my own oil changes, etc. I currently have a 2019 Honda, which I believe, will be a good vehicle as well. Now I will say though, I recently purchased the honda on a trade of my 2010 Dodge RAM, I serviced that vehicle just as I do any other previous models I have had historically. After transmission solenoid replacement, wheehub, CV shaft, fuel pump and computer replacement I finally gave up on the thing. At 109, 000 miles. My 2003 Pontiac vibe I had only needed a set if tires and a 14 hub in the 114, 000 miles I drove clocking it in at 204, 000 miles when I sold. Like Scotty says sometimes you just have to let go of a product if it isnt reliable. I dont mind Japanese products and I think GM makes decent products, although I am not a fan of their recent plant closings.

But I wish people would listen to the first sentence that came out of this mans mouth in this video. Warm the car up in both cold and hot weather. Most people dont do that and I am guilty of this as well. I see it all the time people start the engine and off they go. The same issue goes for when starting up the A/C or heater. Dont start the heater or A/C as soon as one gets in the car. Ruins the fan. Let the car engine run for a tad bit then put the setting on low first wait a minute or so and then adjust to desired temperatur setting. This model does have problems I am not disagreeing with that, but many of us do not follow proper techniques and blame the car when something goes wrong.

My 2017 Honda CRV 1. 5T also has the oil dilution problem. 2018s without the fix same thing. Learned about it when mine started to misfire at -30C because the oil level in the pan was 34mm above full. Engine just doesnt warm up fast enough and too much fuel. Took months of them giving no information and the dealer doing free oil changes before Honda Canada finally had any official information towards a fix. So far so good here in Winnipeg with the reprogramming and changed climate control module but Ive heard others still have mixed results. I think the fix is rolling out in the US also to coldest areas first and then to the south.

Hey Scotty my foreign cars are not very good reliable like American cars they dont last as long can you answer the question and their crash ratings are terrible why the American Car survive I think Im going back to American cars quality they are better quality and I get better gas mileage I think Im going to buy their electric cars as they come out the Chevy Volt supposed to go a million miles or better I know friends that have them and they have no issues except for changing tires and oil are any other fluids as recommended GM cars I have seen them going for a thousands of miles especially when people take care of them

Scotty, you should be experienced mechanic but you share such a bad advice. 10 minutes driving to the work may nor enough to heat the engine completely. The best advice should be to drive longer distance or buy hybrid and use only electric motor for such short distance. White smoke can have same problem, not enough driving distance. All the condensate be collected to muffler and it just can not get easily out. All that smoke can be only the water. Why not on park, easy - not enough air flow. The best thief protection on mickey land are manual transmission.

Hi Scotty I have a 2012 Fiat 500 sport. ( I know I know) it was a good deal and I needed a small car. In the cold weather the battery light came on and I had no power steering. I thought the belt broke, but nope The power steering motor freezes and after warming up it came back on. My mech friend here in NYC says this happens to alot of newer cars especially at Kennedy Airport where we are near. have you ever heard of this happening? What to do besides warming up tje car till it comes back? THANKSBarry in NYC

Hi Scotty, sorry but you are mistaken here about Honda 1. 5 turbocharged engine This particular engine was introduced back in2017 and installed on Honda Civic and CR-V and have been reporting issues with stalling and reduced power output and the problem appears to stem from the fuel finding its way into the engine lubrication system This issue is common at the temperatures -4 farenhight and below. Engine warm up wouldnt help Honda is recalling thousands of cars in China due to this issue

The oil dilution isnt limited to 10th gen Civic. Honda is betting big on the Earth Dreams (Nightmares) 1. 5T, slapping it on 5th gen CR-V and most recently 10th gen Accord. Thats a lot of 1. 5Ts sold. expect this issue to blow up even more. The turbos exacerbate both oil dilution and carbon buildup. Toyota was very smart to stick with NA and direct/port dual injection. Honda used to be amazing but are quickly on the way to becoming the Japanese Chrysler. if they arent already.
