Doing This Will Make Your Engine Run Better #4 Driving at high speed for a while worked for me and my engine It was running kinda poor at times due to very much short distance-driving and low speed driving. So, I went from Norway where I live, to Poland (for vacation) thru German Autobahn Started out with going at speeds from 120 km/h - 140 km/h for about 1-2 hours. Then I took it a step further and ran it up to 150- 180 km/h for 30 min or so, before going over 200 km/h for a bit This really helped and now my engine runs a lot better. No more slugging and not wanting to give all the power it had. Just a tip, if you have been running your car at low speeds for a long time and drove short distances, dont go from there to top speed right away Take it step by step so your engine can run in and get used to the higher RPMs

Talk about an Italian tuneup I just took my 2009 Lexus IS250 with 136, 500 miles and went through the Scotty teaches how to clean the Intake Valves on your GDI engine to heart. After performing this task with the CRC intake valve and tuneup cleaner, (11 oz. can) and after the 1 hour heat sink into the engine I backed out of the driveway and the engine stalled a bit. It did restart immediately and 300 yards up the road the highway begins. I pulled out on the highway and stepped on the gas and WOWOWOW All of a sudden there was a lurching, knocking and groaning and I left 300 yards of soot, gray and black dust, out the tailpipes and behind me in the road. I would bet that several people thought my engine had caught fire After spewing all of this crapola into the air the engine really came to life. It has never run this good and seems like it has more vitality. It also idles far better than it did before as my idle used to be around 1000 amp and now its down around 700. And the engine is much quieter at idle also. And the pickup? WOW Runs like a scalded cat Strangely enough I never got any check engine light or anything on the dash which is OK with me Since I have a GDI engine and since they are notorious for building up carbon around their intake areas, I intend to perform this operation at every other oil change. If you have a GDI engine and are concerned about this, try it out. I was amazed at the results and am a happy driver Thanks Scotty

I use Shell gas with full synthetic, and I do drive somewhat fast. Vehicle is a 2000 Toyota Tacoma 3. 4. Runs great and only gets 18 MPG. I got off-road tires, a shell, and only has 136k miles. I drove it from Tucson to Phoenix and back (200 miles) with 2 bottles of Techron in the tank. It didn't do anything. Still gets 18 MPG and runs the same. This means that always using Shell gas and allowing an MPI engine to have its exercise keeps it running almost like new. GDI engines are another story. Intake valves get nasty no matter what you do. 2000 mile road trip? All it does is make them worse. You'd have to get them cleaned like every 30k by letting a good mechanic perform an intake system cleaning to get most of the junk off the valves.

Brings back memories from the early 80's. Friends & I used to blow out the carbon on Saturday nights when we were done cruising Central (around 10-11pm) in Phoenix. We'd get on the 17 and go north to Black Canyon City or Flagstaff if we wanted an early breakfast. Back then, the speed limit was 55 or 65. There wasn't a need for me to go any faster. With 4. 57: 1 differential gears; my 460 ran at 4000+ RPM at 60mph. Only downside was I used 20 of the 26 gallons in the tank one way (150 miles) to Flagstaff. But, it was a lot of fun and worth it.

I once got pulled over by a Mountie (Canadian eh) for going 20 km/h over the limit on the Trans-Canada Hwy (Hwy No. 1. He asked me why I was speeding, I told him I was trying to blow the carbon out of the engine. He said, that's inventive, never heard that before. He the told me to slow down (no ticket) and the suggested that if I wanted to get the RPM's up, just pull it down into 2nd gear and I'd get the same RPM within the speed limit without breaking the law. It was a fun stop with a great and smart cop.

In the old days when carburetors were popular we would take the windshield washer hose and run it over to the carb. Periodically shoot a shot of water into the carb. Water will make the carbon deposits just melt away and blow through the muffler but that has been years ago. Ever seen a engine where the head gasket was leaking water or coolant into the cylinder, the cylinder will be clean of all carbon deposits. But yes run your engine up to high rpm's to keep the carbon blowed out. It works.

Great tips with this one, Scotty. In summer, I'm on the freeway back and forth to the boat for hours and hours at high speed non-stop in my '03 Volvo V40. When Lake Ontario freezes up, though, it's around-town, short hops for the winter. I've always been concerned about not 'blowin' out the carbon'that's my 1960's Canadian memory of your 1960's 'Italian tune-up'. But I especially like your tip to use a lower gear sometimes to increase RPM. I'm gonna try that one for sure. Thanks.

I have a 04 dakota with the 3. 7 magnum V6 with 178, 000 miles and the 4 speed automatic if Im in the city I run it in 2nd gear and if Im the highway I run it on overdrive for about 5-10 miles and do a couple 70-90 pulls that usually does the job with cleaning those deposits and another thing I do is put a can of Lucas oil fuel injector cleaner every once in a while but do it when you got low gas It mixes better

WOW, Scotty Highlighted my 98 Supercharged Jaguar XjR last year and I do not drive it hard or fast. I have been told to keep the transmission in sport mode for higher RPM, well I never thought of this because I drive it slow and easy. I will now put it in sport mode and run it like it should be ran, It is a powerful car so I guess that is a sign it needs to be ran hard at times.
