Also love my 1997 BMW Z3, a recent aquisition, but I do all my own maintenance and repairs. I initially learned on a slant 6 1970 dart how to do all this but have been gradually working my way almost to this century. It currently looks a true beater, but as an art car aficianado that is part of the future fun of it. German parts are more expensive but dxxm well worth it on reliability. less expensive in the long run. He is right about the cooling though. You can just replace it all with full metal parts now though and ditch the plastic. Good seat covers are your friend as well. I go with the real sheepskin thats fitted. looks decent and comfy.

I think the problems with BMWs when you dont do your own maintenance, is when you walk into an autoshop they have a perception of We can charge this guy more. My brother took his 3 series into a shop with his own wheel bearing provided and they charged him 500 for labor and 90 for a new nut on the axel. I dont agree with the way he went about it but he was frustrated and sold the car soon after due to maintenance cost ripoffs To this day he still misses the car though and the power compared to his current underpowered mazda that will probably last a long time because you cant drive it hard even if you wanted to.

E36s in general seem pretty good in terms of engine and transmission. I had friends ( ok, 2) that had them but when I looked for one I backed out of the deal. The last one has moisture in the engine and sludge-like oil. When I used to work in an oil change place I realized the few BMW E36s that came in had the same thing. I think its the crankshaft ventilation system. I would get one if I knew more about fixing cars. Driving BMW is the whole point of owning one. Its why people have put up with the things that go wrong with them.

Not a fan of BMWs, BUT, This video is something else That guys honesty and understanding of the car, is very refreshing. He nailed it even made me appreciate the car more and identified what i disliked about it. So, respect to you dude ( I think BMW should consider him as a spokesman). And congrats to Scotty, who shows all that even if youre not fund of a perticular brand of cars. well. when someone realy gets the thing and what it is made for. well Scotty shared it with everyone. GOOD JOB to YOU BOTH; )

I love the e36 I had a 98 328i white on black w/ aftermarket staggered 18s. Drove like a champ & always got compliments on her. Ended up selling because a 9 oil filter housing gasket that needed to be replaced was gonna cost me 900 in labor But I just bought a 02 325i 5-speed with 227k miles for 800. CEL is on & she needs some detailing. But drives amazing. It just isnt smogged yet, but I got the 30-day TOP, so Im on the road I really enjoyed this review. Kudos to Scotty & the proud owner of that high mileage e36.

Why do people abuse their cars like this? I had a 1994 325i that I put 290, 000 miles on and I only put a thermostat, water pump, and 4 wheel bearings during the time I owned it. I sold it to a friend and he put another 150, 000 miles on it with another t-stat and water pump. Do your regular maintenance with high quality fluids and these car will last forever. My friend only sold the car because he started a family and needed an bigger car. it was still pristine inside and out at 450, 000 miles

Im sure you can buy metal impeller water pumps, Metal thermostat housing, and metal viscous fan so its not crappy brittle plastic. I owned a E36 328i with 147k on it. I paid 400 for it on ebay and that thing drove awesome but the body was dented and front seats were cracked badly. Why it was so cheap. Anyways I drove that thing like I stole it every day and it never missed a beat but I did crash it and nearly kill myself, if it wasnt a BMW like mine then I probably would have died. Lol

Its interesting, i love BMWs, but my JDM Toyota Premio is turning 20 years old this year and has over 230, 000 kms. Its interior is spot on, no saggy panels, no creaks and no rattles. I dont know what the Germans were smoking in the 90s all their car interiors fall apart with door cards falling off and roof lining sagging. Especially BMW, Audi and Volkswagen That been said, im glad this old Beemer is still running around. And its for sure a ton more fun to drive than my boring Toyota.
