I watch your blogs all the time. I grew up working around cars with my older brothers in the late 60's. You make a lot of sense I agree with a lot of your comments and, listen to your advice. I have a 2001 Yukon XL that I bought brand new back in November of 2000. 160, 000 miles. Still clean runs great. Only problem is that the batteries don't hold up. three days and the battery is drained. Took it to the dealer and some other mechanics that I had a lot of faith in with no results. I did a parasitic draw test removing each fuse individually. Disconnected the radio. Still had the same problem. Had to buy the wife a new car because the Yukon was not reliable. Once it starts it runs fine. I could drive it across country with confidence. Just cant let it sit for too long or, use it for short runs to the store on a daily basis. My wife says I have attachment issues and should get rid of the Yukon. I love that SUV & plan to keep it for a long time. I only wish I could figure out why the batteries don't hold up.

If you want all kinds of quirky electronics issues and the degrading quality beyond the early 2000s my 2004 GMC Envoy was honestly such a beautiful car when it came to how reliable and smooth it drove plus the extra torque with the inline 6 only issues with it are doing anything on the sixth cylinder area, when I replaced my plugs it was a pita It came from Plano, Texas where my step father lived until he moved to Ohio then he passed it down to me wish it had 4X4 though but Texas ended up sliding into a ditch in the snow since it was on ice. Watch out for that 4L60E and any of those transmissions replace that fluid My step dad didnt until it was over 130k miles so when I received it the trans are its 3rd gear under 15k miles after.

I had a 2002 chevy Silverado 5. 3 V-8 regular cab short bed 2wd it was probably the best vehicle l ever had ran great minimal problems almost none now have a 2009 Tahoe 5. 3 V-8 2wd police interceptor and only time will tell it is solid smooth and has decent power for a big truck the doors are big and heavy on both with a very solid sound when opened or closed it has 3. 73 gears and accelerates well from a dead stop or entering on expressways ramps gas mileage is 14 city 20 highway averages 16 if you keep tach under 3000rpm through the gears these engines will last 300, 000 plus miles with regular maintenance and oil changes seen them still running well with this mileage

MIL had a 95 2dr w/ standard transmission. Clutch was hell in traffic, quintessential gas guzzler, but was built like a tank. I was sitting in the passenger seat when some guy in a new model Pontiac back in 2011 slammed into the front of it. Front end of the Pontiac exploded in plastic and Styrofoam, and not a scratch on the Tahoe except it bent the passenger side of the front bumper onto the tire. Tow driver who showed up was able to bend it back in place and we were on our way. The guy in the Pontiac was fine, his car crumbled to absorb the shock, us in the Tahoe did feel it and had some soreness the next day. Different way of building things back then.

I have a 2000 suburban with 230k. Its huge. Just heard some rumbling yesterday so its crazy you posted this today. First my driver side front brake was smoking when I stopped. And the smell was that burnt rubber. Then today rumbling was bad. It rumbles when I brake. Also, when I accelerate again or take my foot off the pedal. It stops when I get passed 25-30. My back rotors were really hot and covered in brake dust. Before yesterday. For about a month my brake pedal would be hard sometimes and normal sometimes. It was weird. Can you help me? Any ideas?

Hello Scotty I have a 2001 Honda HR-V with 145000km, problem is that while I was driving the dash cluster stopped working and after awhile the car died because the alternator died. My mechanic changed the alternator but it died too after a short distance. The mechanic changed the battery (for the possibility of a bad cell) and he drove the thing, after awhile it happened again. Do you have any ideas what it is? Thank you (My mechanic is an old trustworthy mechanic, specialized in Hondas - he says its his first time with this problem)

I agree Scotty. I bought a 2006 Chevy Impala in 2007 and paid 12, 000 for it. It was a lease vehicle and had 30, 000 mikes on it. It still had 6, 000 miles left on the warranty. It has the V6 automatic and currently has 160, 000 miles on it. I gave it to my son 4 years ago for college. The only repair that has been made on the vehicle was a power steering hose. It has had regular maintenance including shocks and tires. It regularly gets 30 mpg and has a smooth, quiet ride.

You know what else is nice, parts are interchangeable between those GM models. My S10 had that style radio with a cassette, now I have the CD player radio like that and a separate cassette deck down below and I can hook my phone in using the adapter and my foam steering wheel was all torn up, so I took a nice leather wrapped one like that one from a salvage yard, 20, because its the same wheel and it was simple to remove/install.

We have a 2001 Yukon XL with 240k miles, pretty much the same as a Tahoe, right? We bought it 3 years ago for 3500 with 220000 miles. Engine runs perfectly, transmission is still shifting smoothly and the car is very easy to work on. Paint is solid around the body, although has some spotty chipped paint in the front from all the stuff that it's been hit by on the road. GM made good stuff back then. Very sad it's not true today.
