Now if the car only smokes blue at start up its the valve stem seals are going out. Oil is slowly dripping into the combustion chamber when it sits overnight. On push rod engines you can change them out easy in most cases. Which you remove the rocker arm cover. Use compressed air in the cylinder your working on or put some rope into the cylinder and bring piston to TDC or close to TDC. Remove rocker arm bolts for that cylinder. Remove the keepers and pull the spring assembly off. Grab the junk seal with pilers pull it off and lube up new one and install it with a deep well socket and light taps. Put it back together and torque rocker bolts to spec or use feeler gauge and set the gap for rocker to valve. But overhead cam setups require some more effort.

Let me correct you. Tata is not only popular in India, but is also one of the biggest, if not the biggest, contributor for Indias GDP. Although its size, its still owned and managed by the Tata family. Is not only a car manufacturer and a brand. It also makes buses, locomotives, trucks, military equipment, aviation equipment, detergents, cooking oil. Also it gives back a lot to the community. As far as I know (Im not from India) Tata is very considered by the population. Yes, they make crappy cars (for western stardards. But for the Indian market its the correct aproach. They motorized the country. There will be a time when people will demand more quality, and Im sure they will be there for the job.

I will disagree wuth you scotty regarding tata. I live in India. They are a pretty popular company in India. They manufacture passenger as well as commercial vehicles. You will find more tatas on Indian roads than toyotas. Tatas main focus is on the budget cars. And as far as ive heard from the people who own them they are pretty good cars. Also suzuki cars are very popular in India. They have partnered with an Indian company maruti and they sell their cars under the name maruti suzuki. They are also pretty good cars. The Indian car market is very different than the usa car market in terms of the brands that are popular.

My 1980 LeSabre Ltds 3. 8L has eaten 2 sets of valve seals--original & rebuilt. Since the 1989 rebuild, shes gone past 200, 000 miles & total miles near 330, 000. She only smokes at startup, uses 1 qt between oil changes & otherwise is a phenomenal runner. Im her once & forever owner. My mechanic hubby wants to install a 3rd set of seals but Im worried she will only eat those (within 25, 000 miles) yet again. Seems many 3. 8Ls, not just old GMs, have this identical issue. Are there any hi-perf seals available that would be a plausible choice? Like material tested on NASAs new rocket engines LOL? Youre the man, Scotty

Blue smoke could be valve stem oil seals. Used to have a car that burnt oil like this and did 110, 000+ miles with it and no problems with the engine and did upto 200, 000 miles with it and still excellent high oil pressure. I sold it due to the clutch that had worn out. I used to top up with castrol gtx mineral oil using 5 litres of oil every 1500 miles and used redex to clear up the thick carbon on top of the pistons every few thousand miles. At least its getting fresh oil all of the time which is a good thing.

My absolutely gorgeous 68 mustang that Ive owned since 1977 is smoking bad on start up, and almost every takeoff fro a stop. 289 v8, original engine, never been touched. Runs great, good oil pressure. And runs nice and cool. Ive been told its the valve guide seals, but it has a lot of blow by thats quite smoky. I hate to tear apart this old engine since its never been touched. Could repairing the valve guide seals really help, or be a waste of time and money, otherwise the car needs nothing else.

Hey Scotty, I have a 2001 Saturn L300 V6, my car started stalling whilst driving a couple weeks ago. The CEL is on, and the scan tool reports p0335 and p0341 for cam and crank sensor issues. I tried your tapping technique but both seem fine when I tap and move them around as much as I can while the car is on, but randomly when Im driving the car will stall. Is it possible for the issue to really be the sensors? I dont have a way to probe these wires without piercing them so its hard to test the voltage.

Many times when a vehicle is using oil, piston rings are stuck in carbon. The rings or not popping back open to match the cylinder walls, put about 2 ounces of liquid wrench in each cylinder and let it soak for a few days, crank the engine over with the spark plugs out to get rid of anyting left. Then start it up and take it out and beat on it for a little while and see if they unstick. Many engines i replaced the rings were just stuck,

Hi Scotty What is your opinion of the 2008 Toyota 4runner v6 2wd auto? Mine has 88k and the first owner took excellent care of it. The only issue I am having right now is a slight knock in the steering at low speeds when going over small bumps. If there are any known issues that you could share, I would really appreciate it. I also wanted to thank you for your videos I really enjoy them and how informative they are. Jack
