5 Trucks That Wont Last 100, 000 Miles Gregory Faulkner: Scottys continued railing on downsized GTDI engines, from a pure physics standpoint, makes sense, but in this case especially, his 100% rejection of a full size 1/2-ton pickup with a downsized four cylinder GTDI engine (the latest entry by GM) is based on a flawed premise. Before looking at Scottys flawed premise, it should be noted that this isnt just an old Ecotec designed 4 cylinder mounted in a pickup. It has been carefully and masterfully developed specifically for truck duty. Firstly, it has the same displacement as Fords small twin turbo that has performed and lasted nearly flawlessly in the segment since 2014; secondly, GM spent lots of dollars on this engine making it super strong and to remove many of the pitfalls of a typical 4 cylinder engines. Scotty likely hasnt researched this specific engine. Now for the flawed premises. Premise number one is that GM makes bad 4 cylinder engines. Ive got a 12 year old Saturn Aura 3600 pound car with a 2. 4L Ecotec 3 (really too much car for this 158 ft-lb torque engine, but its got 157, 00 miles and has been flawless and has not lost a bit of performance. Flawed premise number 2. Scotty starts of stating that 1/2-ton trucks are built for and should be purchased for working them hard hauling and towing. Well, that premise is wrong for probably 60% of the drivers who operate them. I have always used my 1/2-ton trucks mostly for the bed capacity, for light hauling of big, bulky and long stuff that a mid size cant do and have never towed with my truck. Heck a truck has a trailer mounted on the frame, so why would I buy a truck and then another bed in the form of a trailer to hook to it to haul stuff. That its a train; not a truck. So where do we see downsized turbo-charged engines in pickup trucks? They are all in the 1/2-ton class. A 1/2 ton is used by many drivers 80% of the time for commuting and errand running. A downsized turbo allows for mpg that a larger engine cannot possibly achieve. A 1996 F150 had a 4. 9L V6 standard engine that had 150 hp and 260 ft lb torque. How much heavy work was that power train supposed to achieve. Certainly a 2. 7L I4 turbo with 310 hp and 348 ft-lb torque at 1500 RPM would work as well as a large NA V6 for many operators who would never come close to keeping that turbo on boost very often. And when the turbo is not on boost, it will save alot of fuel. Ive got an F150 with the 2. 7L twin turbo. Its a regular cab, short bed 2WD with 3. 31 rear axle ratio. It weighs only 4190 pounds full of fuel. I use it for light duty (aka 1/2-ton duty. I have achieved 24 mpg lifetime average. So what is the advantage of my 2. 7 twin turbo V6 over the base 3. 3L NA V6? It is much more refined and no Chevy pickup model can get around me when Im challenged. More importantly, I can cruise right up a 5% grade and itll never downshift to 5th. Try that with the same truck with the NA 3. 3L V6. Its not just about speed; its about refinement, but those few times I need the speed, its there. The new GM 2. 7L I4 makes even more sense, because a large four cylinder turbo mounted in a 1/2-ton for light duty users means that the concept is a much cheaper concept, and the turbo is a great equalizer for two extra cylinders thats lost

Ram trucks are there own band now, no longer Dodge, so they say. Anyway, I have a 2013 Ram 1500 base trim Tradesman truck with 65, 000 miles. Had to take it in for a couple of recalls such as airbag. After 2 years in the middle of summer A/C quit blowing cold air. It took several trips back and forth to the dealership under warranty before they finally got enough stuff replaced and it started working again. But each time they were baffled when I came back. And they would have it for a couple of days at a time. Unless the defrost is turned on warmer or hot it blows out cold air as if its the A/C, dont know what thats about but doesnt really cause a problem as the temperature is always set from warm to hot if the defroster is on anyways. Dont want to take it back to the dealership to mess with it again. No other major problems yet. Shakes and rattles more than when new and it seems like fuel economy is dropping even though all maintenance has been dutifully maintained. Sometimes it feels like theres a popping in the steering column which is unsettling.

I bought a Silverado with the 4. 8 in 2009. I drove it about 60, 000 miles and on a very cold day it ate 2 roller lifters. A little internet search revealed that a lot of Chevy Trucks were blowing up like this. There was even a site titled Like a Knock. The Dealership Service Manager claimed it was first he heard of it when he actually had another truck to my left with the same issue. He gave me a price off the top of his head of 2500 dollars to repair it because he claimed that the Warranty had expired, how convenient, huh? Lucky for me Id opted for the bumper to bumper 90-100, 000 mile extended Warranty They cracked the heads off and intake, pulled the Cam and all the Roller Lifters, they replaced the factory valve train with Crower components and the truck now has 138, 000 miles on it and running fine. The Crower stuff was at least 2 times as thick as the Chevy crap as well. Thank God I had the fore sight to buy the Extended Warranty. Good Luck out there friends.

One thing Id point out on Chevy aluminum frame is they used both steel and aluminum. That will be significantly more dangerous in a accident. Steel will tear right through the areas with aluminum. All steel is great for strength, all aluminum is good for a crumple zone for safety. Combo layout like gm means steel panels can come shattering through aluminum at passengers. I was observing the choice layout when they first showed it seems dangerous. look it over. Im not sure about this example but picture a steel fork and aluminum fork. You can imagine grabbing a meatball with it, steel works great, aluminum it will flex, might be challenging, no damage done though. Try steel at the bottom and aluminum at the top its going to crumple and that steel could hurt your hand on impact once aluminum is gone, bends or tears.

Now I know not to watch ur stuff cause I agree the 4 cylinder in the Chevy is no good but them ls motors they come with are the top number one engine a lot of people are using in all types of builds and gm has the best made truck I have 2 silverados z71 and I ever changed it was my fluid filters and on one my transmission but it was my fault cause I was pissed off and abused it ford and dodge are notorious for transmission problems ford for computer problems every junk yard I got to I see whole bunch of fords and dodged still nice probably blown motor or tranny but the Silverado and the gmc are totaled there not one in there with a whole good body and everything still in side cause chevys motors last forever 5. 7 5. 3 6. 0

Have r would GMC trucks. Love both. Will never sell either. The 96 has 270 thousand miles on it. 5. 7 litre. With factory size tires it got 21 miles per gallon on the road and 15 in town. With 373 gears. Things begs to be driven. Know people who have them with over 500 thousands on them. No issues. Only normal wear for any vehicle. 2013 has 115 thousand on it. Runs great. Done nothing to it. 13 rides and drives awsome. Gas milage is 14. 5 but I didnt but it for gas milage. 342 gears. Town or highway. They should have stayed with the 5. 7. The early 2000 model 5. 3 engines are really good engines. Know people with well over 300 thousand on them. They get better fuel milage than the new ones.

Chrysler has gone through the roof in reliability since the fiat merger. You know it, I know it, youre just pissed because its not a Toyota. The ZF8 is one of the best automatic transmissions made. For comparison, my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 has 171, 000 on it. My 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 has 200, 000 on it. (Just three months ago had 194, 000 on it) back then, it was kinda known dodge trucks werent as good as quality as they are now. The new ram 1500 is a great truck. Period.

My 2002 Silverado z71 has 224k with the 5. 3 and its still working like a champ. The major components Ive replaced have been the fuel pump, water pump, and oil pump. All which started to fail right after 150k miles. Why do you hate on GM Scotty? Haha Im not a Ford fan but I do respect Ford for what it is and for simply being American Both GM and Ford have some junk engines and vehicles but at the end whos perfect? Thanks for your videos God Bless You

love my 97 dodge 1500 5. 2 4x4 with the 3500 manual trans. single cab and short bed. 284k miles so far. i always said i would never buy a dodge unless it had a standard. still love my truck and will pass it down to my daughter but only if she helps with the rebuild after that 300k mark. i just hope she appreciates the hard work that is involved in keeping a classic alive. and maybe just maybe it will stay in the family.
