What Its Like to Own an Old Corvette

What Its Like to Own an Old Corvette never stop fighting: I had an 89. Vette was a dream car. Bought at 25 years of age. I was so pumped, till i owned it for a few years and learned a thing or 2 about a thing or 2. As a stock set up, they were dogs. All the plastic trim was cheap junk. I wanted to redo some of the car, but realized it was a slow, cheaply made vehicle, with overpriced parts. Decided to park it after an electrical problem. At a rummage sale a guy offered a few thousand so i said good riddance. Otherwise i couldnt give the thing away. So glad i got rid of it. That plastic midline body trim/ body panel divider drove me nuts. Thought it was an awful engineering idea that ruined the whole flow of the body. Hate to say it, but i think the 84 to 90s body style is now the most hated body style, which was held by the 70s vettes, which are now seen as unique looking machines. What hurt these vettes and many years after, is they look like cheap plastic bodies. Also these vettes were so flimsy you have to park on a pretty flat surface to take the top off, and to definitely put it in. The whole car flexes and the bolts dont line up for crap otherwise.

Dont do it, seriously. My dad is a Corvette nut. He knows a lot about Vettes, I built one for him(82 Stingray, and has owned enough to not buy another one. The 76 Vette has the softest frame of any Vette made. The 82 & 84 Vettes had boat anchors for motors, crossfire injection garbage. Then you have to really spend money on a good solid 4 bolt main 350. Believe it or not, most Vettes have 2 bolt mains. Then comes the fiberglass flex on the older Vettes. Ive had to strip paint and apply a fresh gel coat (in & out, then repaint. Vettes are Not worth the hassle. I know where I can buy 4 84-87 Vettes right now for under 5k for all 4. They are garbageI beat one of my dads Vettes that had a 355, stage 3 chip & a shift kit with my wifes (mildly tuned) 94 Accord EX, through the mountains where a Vette is supposed to be good at handling corners. A 5. 7L got SPANKED by a 2. 0L. Yes, my dad sold that Vette after that race. Garbage guys, stay far away from a Corvette. ( & I love pre-93 Camaros )

cobrapub here, I presently own 1994 corvette but in 2018 I had a a nasty turn on I -10 with a tornado and a 18 wheeler semi with my 1995 that I bought in 2000 to replace my transamThe cost of old used corvettes are relatively cheep, so I bought an 1986 corvette for my mom, she loved itI was shocked at the reliability of the L-88 corvette, where the biggest problem was the transaxle bearings it ran cheaper than my 1995 LT1corvette which was a problem in high water and in summer heat wavesBe warned the LT1 distributer is located below the middle of the engine front face under the waterpump, cost of fixing the either is over 1500, the L-88 distributer is on to of the motor in the rearIf you are thinking of buying a old corvette LT1 I suggest having the cooling fan relays bypassed so the run all the time when the car is on

I have a 95 with 46, 000 miles on it. You have obviously spent a lot of TLC and thats great. It is your car to do with as you please but I dont understand why the engine modification, why not keep it original and full Corvette. I think your engine originally was an LS-1. That was a darn good one, I had an 86. Why not spend the money/effort in to restoring what the car came with? Just my opinion.

The auxiliary cable wasnt stock, There was no airbag in the breadbox, and the motor is probably a 383 and not a 303 as stated. The 4 + 3 was a terrible transmission, I had one. They got rid of the clamshell hood for insurance reasons. It was an expensive and large piece to replace, but yeah, it was cool.

Had a Camaro from around these years growing up, as a kid I wasnt so into it because to me I wanted one car that was fast and daily driveable but as I get older the more I like vettes. Great entry level car and the motor is tunable and swappable with an LS which is probably how Id go

You give us all a WEALTH of practical / valuable knowledge of car ownership, Scotty. But heres an example of so many passionate motorheads who love their cars, despite flaws. (The C-4s had some teething problems 1st years) They deal, fix, modify and enjoy. IE - All the passionate commenters.

Very nice. I had a 89. Put about 6k into the motor. Total top end. Never went into the bottom end. With 3: 73 gears I put down 380WHP. The only problem I ever had was the display on the dash went out. Loved the car but being it was my only car I needed more room. Sadly I had to sell it.

the c4 is the most under rated corvette on the market today, world class Ferrari like handling for its day the mid 80s. these cars can be had for a song. the c4 is next in line to through the roof in collector car markets. buy now while you still can, soon these will be untouchable.

When was the years that the cam lobes on the back of the engine went bad? 1976-9 350 cc? I remember putting in cam & lifters in when I worked at a GM dealer in the 70s and my son bought a low mileage Corvette that vibrates on acceleration and has exhaust sputter at idle.
