Here\'s Why the Government is Shutting Down Mechanics john smith: Not in vegas. In fact if anything, the smog laws in this state have made it very lucrative and legal for shops to rip off consumers. There's no state agency overseeing garages. There's no agency to explain the testing and regulations. You have to get an inspection every year and you only find out about it when they send a small postcard 30 days before registration. If it gets lost in the mail, your hosed. You can request a postponement online but that's only good for 10 days and besides you can't register until you have the test done and though the police often won't bother for traffic stops, they have a pit boss mentality about stopping cars and writing tickets for expired registration. This town has a phenomenal number of car lots. Probably more than any other city in the country and I suspect one reason is the idiotic smog laws. I hear stories all the time about people junking their cars and buying another just because of some smog related issue.

I replaced the cat on our 91 gmc sierra 1500 two years ago. The inner honey comb was coming out. This time (which was supposed to be December, I didn't go to the regular mechanic that was doing the smog. He always had to work on the truck to get it to pass. And since the last time truck ran good except it would die at idle. If it idled more than about 40 seconds to a minute or a red light ( but not always. This is after rebuilding the throttle body, new throttle position sensor, IAC valve and temp sending unit for computer. I took truck to smog only place because I was in a hurry, it was past due and running good. I asked smog guy to do a check instead of test in case it didn't pass. He said that was a waste of money. If it doesn't pass he would tell me what was wrong and I could fix it and bring it back and not have to pay again. Well truck failed. He said cat is bad. I told him it was new and to try again. He again said cat was bad. Also, I only ran truck about 10 minutes before. And as soon as he started checking stuff under the hood and plugging in his equipment the truck wouldn't idle at all. I need my truck, it is a spare but I have less than 15, 000 miles on the rebuilt transmission and 700 worth of tires. The smog guy said the state would give me 1500 which is nowhere near enough. In my area (the central valley of California ) these trucks sell for 3500 or more and a decent newer truck (2003-2012) is 15, 000 at the low end. These are not an option. Our other truck is a 2004 gmc sierra 2500hd 4x4 with 311, 000 miles and new transmission and transfer case at 295, 000 miles. We don't get rid of our vehicles. I'm ready to go back to my 1969 1971 chevy trucks because of smog b. s. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all of your tips in your videos.

To the person with the Buick cat converter issue. You need to do some diagnostic work if you wan to fix your car. You almost never replace the cat for a P0420. It means you are getting too much air. For the converter to be the problem, it would need to have restricted flow. In most cases, your car will drive noticeably different, so unless that happens, start with the intake side of the motor. Here's what you can do yourself before you go to a mechanic. P0420 is a bank 1 code, and P0430 is a bank 2 code. Since you have a 420, start by verifying what side of the motor is bank 1. Do a google search to find out the firing order of your engine. You'll have no problem finding some pics. Find the number 1 cylinder. The side of the motor cylinder 1 is on, is bank 1. The side cylinder 2 is on, is bank 2. Get a can of break cleaner and start your car. First listen on the bank one side and see if you hear any hissing, or air noises. If you hear anything, that's your problem. Fix whatever is causing the air leak. If no luck there, spray some break clean at the base of the intake manifold and surrounding area. If you spray an area and the car runs different, that's an air leak, and you need to repair that spot. Its usually an intake manifold gasket. If you don't get results from the above, Check your O2 sensors. Your car should have 4 of them. 2 before the cat, and 2 after. Just swap positions. Left to right and right to left. Check for codes. If you now get a P0430, you have an O2 sensor problem. I you still get the P0420, the sensors are OK. There's no need to swat them back to their original locations. Their the exact same part. Beyond that, you'll need to take it to someone. But I would say about 75% you have an air leak somewhere on the bank 1 side of the motor.

My family owned a recycling yard. They started out with 3 cars selling parts and buying metal(tin, aluminum, copper, ECT) worked very hard for many years building up what was the biggest tin baleing company in 4 states (northwest) but the local government said it was a eyesore to see all those junk cars getting parted out and bailed. They would give giant tax breaks and perks to the much bigger corporate owned recycling center. All while coming up with new ways to nitpick and fine I'm go out of their way to shut down the local business. Good even got to the point that the city moved in massive amounts of dirt to make hills in front of it so that you couldn't see the yard behind. They did it to other parts yards they never did do it in front of the giant Corporation. They got tired of the fights (also other things) and sold out. The city had a success story of hard work and they only wanted to see the much larger Corporation come in. Local government is a joke when they don't care about local problems. Sorry for the book

Scotty, I need your help I have a 2016 VW Passat. These models have Autonomous Braking Systems where the vehicle will stop for you if you get to close to another vehicle. My vehicle brakes on its own without any vehicle or obstacle in front of me Ive had the vehicle to the dealership on four different occasions and theyve not been able to find anything. I just got my car back here this week after the dealership had it for seven weeks. All they did was show me how to turn off the front Assist so that it wont engage. They will not acknowledge that there is a problem with this breaking system. Needless to say the car is a safety issue to me and my family in addition to those who would travel directly behind me when the car decides to stop all of a sudden. The dealership and Volkswagen of America do not want to take responsibility here. What should I do?

No its the government and dealerships trying to control people. My friend here in chicagoland area has a very reputable shop told me he heard something about california trying to make it illegal for people to work on their own cars. Meaning only people with a license can buy parts through a dealer or vendor. Better for shops, sux for DIY'ers. This is dealerships paying off crocked politicians. I remember when it was perfectly fine to post up a for sale sign on your car (early 90's. Now its illegal to do so. At least around here it is. People still sometimes do it, but you can get a ticket. I also just read in the paper their trying to make it that if you privately sell your car, the seller and the buy pay sales tax. This is called dirty politics my friend.

HEY SCOTTY and HYBRID LOVERS/ HATERS. PSA Theres some places that show you how to rebuild with new/ mildly used battery cells, and theres actually some brand new full on replacements for 2-3k and those same places with provide you the equipment to replace it. It cost my mother in law total under 4K to have her son go into those shops and put in her new battery. He knows NOTHING about car mechanics but they have an easy to learn process you pay to learn and then spend like 3-8 hours doing it. Shes now put 6 years and almost 100k miles on the new battery so it can be worth it if youre willing to do the work or have one of those locations. Basically youre screwed if you live on a non coastal state

Talk about the new pending or possible laws passed in California in some counties that makes it difficult or impossible to work on a car in ur own driveway Laws like u can only use common tools ( ) Or has to b fixed in 24 hrs. ? Etc etc etc it really crazy They list what u can do or not but in the usual gov. fashion, ie break out the law books Lol well a tune up is ok? but if said tune up, yadda tadda yadda, necessitate s tools not common to most house holds ( seriously) said repairs, bhla bhla, can t not b done Etc etc

I have a 02 Ford Taurus. Replaced the fuel pump, filter, plug wires, plug, ignition coil. Runs fine but then after it's warm it starts to idle rough. Then it will die while idling and then won't start like it's out of gas. Or won't start after it is shut off like it is out of gas. I have checked and the fuel bar is still getting gas. After given time to cool down it still won't start but if I swap the a. c. relay and fuel pump relay (both new as well) it will not only start but purrs. Getting very frustrated

1. Move away2. Form a coalition of local repairmen. 3. Refuse to repair any cars from cities that do things like this. If you get enough of the repair men in the areas that dont have repair men, the city will eventually grind to a halt. 4. When the residents of the city cant drive any more, they will vote out the politicians, or property prices will go down. 5. When the city asks repairmen to come back, do so under one condition. That the city perform a human sacrifice as penance for their sins.
