If You Buy These Car Parts Youre Stupid Steve Smekar: Scotty, brutha man, I gotta take you task on tires. I am the grandmaster of cheapass. When I bought tires for both my Mitsu Mirage and my ladyfriend's Saturn, I was all about buying the cheapest rubber I could get away with. I even bought a set of Bridgestones for my car and they turned out to be crap, out of round, wearing unevenly, etc. Never got 40 k miles out of any of them for 10 years. I recently had a flat tire on my Merc Sable and the salesman asked what I wanted to do. All the other tires were original equipment, over 10 yrs old. I bit the bullet and said give me new set of original equipment. I paid 600 for a set of four, more than I ever paid for a set of tires in my life. Continentals, these are great tires, smooth riding, 90 k warranty, handle like a dream. Never going back to cheap tires.

I agree with you nearly all the time, but if you buy the better grade gas, especially when own a V 8 engine, well mine have always ran better and gotten a little better gas mileage. Road trip testing i used reg and then when about empty I used Good High test, Got a little over 2 miles per gallon in a 6. 2 V 8 GMC. Doesn't sound like much but with a V 8 struggling to get nearly 20 mpg on hwy you'll be happy to get it. That is with Royal Purple Synthetic oil and K & N filters My wife's 1999 Wrangler does like anything but high test. Engine Light comes on if she runs the lower grades. Told her to only put high test in it and for well over two years now no more engine light showing up. ( I know probably needs to do a 02 senor replacement and I will ) I also saw a study about the effects on the Catalytic converter, test shows they do last as longer if not burning the cheapest gas. Mid to high test showed to not load up and prevented excessive back pressure Maybe newer Catalytic converters are made different but this study was done in the earlier 2000 and they cut them open and showed the different.

I agree with the tire thing too, esp getting the proper rated tires isnt always necessary l, just cause u drive a bmw 330 doesnt mean u will ever drive ur car 125 mph let alone 149 or whatever the rated tires are. So a big name place will always try to rip u off n sell u the most expensive tires u dont need always. Buy em from tire rack or tire discount n get em mounted a good used tire place. U will thank me. They have the same machines as the dealers generally speaking n change more tires than dealers generally speaking. They will actually replace valve stems but only when u need em so on. U will save so much in the end doing it this way. Also of u have run flats but a spare wheel cheap as jack n buy five tires n u will never worry about that ever again either. N u will save a min of the cost of all mentioned above to pay for itself.

Gotta disagree with some of his recommendations. I always buy a 'Top Tier gasoline. Yeah, the additive package does have an affect. I have several vehicles and the gas mileage is greater, just to name one benefit. Also, about 12 years ago I bought my first set of Michelin tires. They are the only tires I've ever owned that outlasted the tread wear warranty. And, they are safer than any other tire I own. I live in the mountains of WV and I've had to emergency brake for deer and bear numerous times. Still have full control and significantly shorter stopping distance. The LTX tires I run are as good as any other with chains. Cornering? My vehicle feels like a Ferrari.

Btw I just had the worst experience at my local Toyota dealership (Eddy's Toyota) in Wichita KS, but anyways, Scotty what do think about those new kia and Hyundai, Telluride and Pallasade, I think they have the same engine not just the size but same factory, do you think they can last for at least 10 years and or 200k miles? Also I have this vw routan same thing as the grand caravan, I've replaced all pads and rotors and master cylinder, bleeded the breaks through all 4 calipers, and my break pedal still goes down to the bottom, I have to start breaking a mile away, I would hate to keep replacing parts, unless it's something easy and cheap

I disagree about getting the battery with the higher CCA. Cars today should need less than 250 CCA to crank the starter, even up north in the winter. The balance in the battery construction is the higher CCA means more surface area for the lead/acid reactions, usually by squeezing in more plates but that means they are thinner and might be flimsier. Also it takes away volume where you could otherwise have more acid which means it can crank LONGER. Get decent quality (I like Interstate personally, the largest case you can fit in your car and you should be all set.

Scotty, Ive hauled gasoline to the stations for over six years and VERY MUCH AGREE with sticking to getting the gas from the big stations. As a tanker hauler we carried a drop sheet that once signed absolved us from putting the wrong grade gas into the wrong tanks. The liability falls then on the station owner and we couldnt tell anyone due to the privacy clause on the form. And you can guess which station owners would always do this to make money (Indian. Just never buy gas from a north Georgia dealer along I-75

Part of my washing routine on my car is to do a final tire dressing with a rubber/vinyl protectant that cleans and revitalizes the rubber sidewalls. Those are expensive Bridgestone Potenza high-performance tires out of which I want to squeeze every possible mile. A good resource for judging the suitability of an oil for an engine is to consult used oil analyses(UOAs) that are available on the internet. The oil gets chemically analyzed for wear particles, contaminants and remaining additive concentrations.

Concerning gasoline: the Toyota manual for my car suggests 5% ethanol. a 10% ethanol mix has caused me problems, thus I get real gasoline. NOW, recently my gas station has started carrying diesel, which has eliminated the non-ethanol gasoline so my only choice is ethanol mix and the super duper gasoline which is a waste. When I get my gasoline on the first of October, I need to find a gas station that either doesn't use diesel or a pure gasoline but no super duper gasoline. BLAH.

I'd argue that you should spend a little more on quality tires and not just because they are known to last longer, but they are much better at keeping grip no matter the condition. It's more of a matter of safety. Your tires are just as important as your brakes with stopping you. So make sure you buy quality tires. You don't need to buy the most expensive tire, but buying from premium brands such as Michelin or Continental is usually the best options out there.
