The Thaya Valley Railway is a disused and already partially demolished railway line from Schwarzenau in Lower Austria to Slavonice in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Today, the track bed beyond Waidhofen an der Thaya to Slavonice has been turned into a cycle path forming part of the 111km Thaya Circuit Cycle Trail. We join Locomotive No. 92. 2271 and its train of period four wheeled carriages for a ride along the remaining section of the line to Waidhofen an der Thaya, passing through attractive countryside, following the course of the Thaya (river. The tracks were very rusty, indicating many months, maybe years since a train last used the line. Please join me for this very rare opportunity to take a train through the Thaya Valley. Hmm. applying my very poor attempt at translation and my very sketchy knowledge of German, I'm guessing that the name of the first town translates to -black gold- (which is an expression used to refer to crude oil since it's so valuable. I'm basing that on the assumption that Schwarz is German for black, the AU at the end is an abbreviation for the Latin word for gold and -en- is just a concatenating word.
Of course, I could be totally wrong. It's happened before, believe it or not. ;)
Anyway, this is a pleasant journey which you've recorded and I'm grateful to you for posting it. :)

I've passed the junction a couple of times on the way to/from Gmund, but missed the opportunity to ride up the branch when the diesel units were still operating up there. This is a marvellous substitute for the real thing and I'm really pleased to have been able to share your experience in such clarity. Thanks.

22: 37 The landscape here reminds me a bit of the Liverpool Plains, just over the Liverpool Ranges that separate the Hunter Valley from the New England region of New South Wales, here in Australia.

The advertising sign at right of the train (freeze frame at 31: 27, second from bottom, -C & A-, I wonder if that's the Australian firm, Coal & Allied, as the trademark is VERY similar.

Great journey on a classic rural branch line railway, with a magnificently maintained steam locomotive. Once i am allowed to leave the UK, i would like to visit.

A very interesting journey, hopefully this branch line ( like many others world wide ), could serve as an example for the foreseeable future?
