Time Travel with the South Devon Railway

Let the South Devon Railway take you back to a time when life was more relaxed and people had time to simply say -Hello-. The nearby Devon Expressway makes an interesting comparison, the railway blends in with its surroundings whereas the expressway is an unsightly scar on the beautiful Devon landscape. The stations on the line are kept in pristine condition, complete with all the paraphernalia, such as trolleys, suitcases and milk churns that would have adorned a West Country station in the 1940-s. We start at Buckfastleigh station where there is a large free car park, miniature railways offering rides on selected dates, workshops to look around, a museum, a caf- and for the railway modeller there is a well-stocked model shop. The friendly volunteers and staff on the line will happily look after you and answer any questions you may have about the railway and its locomotives. Looking very smart in Great Western colours is our locomotive, GWR 2-6-2T small -Prairie- No. 5542 at the head of a rake of chocolate and cream carriages. The guard blows his whistle, the engine gives a toot and we are off, shortly after leaving the station we cross Nursery Pool Bridge over the River Dart, the rest of the journey passes through attractive rolling farmland, the railway is never far from the river, running along its banks for much of the trip, we pause at Staverton, one of the prettiest stations to be found anywhere in the UK. The other end of the line is Totnes Riverside station a short walk away from the mainline station and town. For younger travellers there is the Rare Breeds Farm. I highly recommend a joint ticket for families with children combining a ride on the Railway, Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies along with a visit to the Rare Breeds Farm. You may even get a chance to compare the GWR of yesterday with the GWR of today if one of the modern Intercity Express Trains speeds past on the mainline. The railway is a standard gauge line, (1, 435 mm - 4 ft 8 1-2 in) located in the South, West of England, easily accessible from the A38 Devon Expressway or by main-line GWR trains from London and the West Country, regular CrossCountry trains from the North and Midlands also serve Totnes. The best. Steam engine with the sound and the natural beauty, rivers excellent. Treat to eyes. Don't understand in Totnes station steam is replaced by another steam on reverse. Interior of trains and people relaxing. Wonderful. Would love to see the railway station in full the booking counters parking waiting halls etc, Thanks for sharing

Tim, another masterful presentation. I suppose there was a bit of artistic licence in the closing soundtrack, the birdsong sounded so prominent. Amazing, given the proximity of the Devon Expressway (A38) to Buckfastleigh station. But magical, all the same. Peter

Suuuupeeer video! Frumoasa calatorie cu trenul! Pacat ca in Romania nu mai avem locomotive cu abur in presiune, doar Mocanitele. Big LIKE
