With leaves falling along with light rain we set off with No. 9351 and its six carriages along the sinuous, steeply graded single track railway towards Minehead. Such conditions required the locomotive crew to be on top of their game, not once did their engine slip, a real testament to both the crew and the locomotive. The sound of the locomotive working hard as the exhaust beat echoed off the hills made this a trip to remember, along with the autumn colours, moody skies and a locomotive in GWR colours the scene was complete. Our locomotive started life in 1934 as a 5101 class 2-6-2T tank engine numbered 9351, it became a 2-6-0 tender engine numbered 5193 after preservation. For more information

Another wonderful video Tim. I first saw this railway in old Railscene videos in the 1980's and the WSR has certainly matured since those days. In the 80's most services only ran from either Bishops Lydeard to Wilton or Minehead to Wilton. They have a western Hymek on the line D7017 and that could only run on the line once a year due to it's weight. In the 80's it celebrated it's 21st birthday and it ran twice, double it's usual workings. Crowcombe Healthfield station was one track only although the other track was in situ it was used for stock storage. GWR 2-6-2 tank 5572 from Didcot was operating services along with Pannier tank 6412 and (at that time) the recently restored 53808 in BR black livery. In those days ( I don't know if they still do it) but DMU shopper trains were run from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard to allow people in Minehead to shop in Taunton. The rails were still laid to Norton Fitzwarren but only the occasional DMU traversed the line. At that time preserved DMUs and diesels were banned from running on BR. So the DMU on the shopper train couldn't run to Taunton Station.

Nice video. I volunteer on this line, clearing up the leaves and lineide undergrowth between Crowcombe Heathfield and Stogumber. My tip is to get off at Stogumber for a cream tea in the station garden. Lovely!

What a wonderful video. I travelled this line in May 1970 from Taunton to Williton for a Field Study Couse at Nettlecombe Court. In those days it was a DEMU service.
