Great video! Thello is definitely my go-to choice for heading to Venice, I've taken it 3 times since 2013. The quality of the trains has really improved over the years though some things never change - I remember being late into Venezia Santa Lucia on my first journey! Didn't bother me much as I could reach my hotel by the time check-in was open. But better communication about the delay reasons would be appreciated. Train crew are always a laugh, usually hanging out in the restaurant car in the middle of the night and pleasant to chat to. I think the best piece of advice I got about Thello was to go in with reasonable expectations - and to not assume that an overnight train from Paris to Venice is going to be the Venice-Simplon Orient Express!

I believe some Eastern European sleepers book singles that are the same gender in a 4-bed compartment like yours, or two couples.
You're young enough to be able to sleep on a hard bed that is too short, but I'd be better off in a seat that reclined a bit.
It's nice to have the restaurant car, but that meal was perhaps five times its supermarket retail cost. I suppose you were paying for your share of having a restaurant car rather than having it part of the ticket price.
Still, you can walk around more on a train than a plane, and there's often something to see when you look out the window. You aren't crammed in with 200 other people, and the pace is more relaxing. There IS a place for these overnight trains.

All of Europe-s a night-train/And all the men and women merely passengers/They have their Brexits and their Schengen Areas/And one man in his couchette smells many farts/His trips covering different gauges/At first the teenager/Hungover and puking in his best mate-s arms/And then the whining young man, with rucksack/And bleary morning face/And then the husband/Sighing with sternness/And a where-s my passport? /Made to his wife-s eyeball/The Spanish gauge shifts into green and considered Irun/The spectacle of those/With Euros well saved/Last train of all/That bookends this changing, scentful mystery/Is second-class and near-Bolivian/Sans tea, sans pies, sans haste, sans air spring -

At 500 odd miles THAT train trip will be more environmentally friendly than flying. but once it gets above 700 miles apparently its a wash. Those calculations are however also apparently based solely on the fuel use/carbon footprint of train vs aircraft. what I'd like to see included is the environmental impact of the BUILDING OF THE RAILWAY! That would absolutely NOT be -neutral- or -free- in environmental terms! How could it be? In fairness one must then also include the impact of airport building. but how we can promote Rail as -Green- if ignoring the environmental cost of track laying and so on?

I enjoyed seeing your overnight rail experience. I did 3 trips to Europe with a daughter as her travel companion per request from my wife and had my best trips ever. We frequently rode the rails and we have been to Gare de Lyon for a trip to NICE. In 2016 my daughter and I did an overnight German train from Munich to Amsterdam for the start of a day there, but I happened to read it had been discontinued a few months after our trip due to high speed rail getting you to places in Europe so fast. I enjoyed seeing your video. From St. Louis

Interesting video. Your logo is probably way too big and you should be a bit less shy about filming some parts of the train, like in the restaurant. just look at what most vloggers do, they film without really caring and in a sense it's the best for us viewers if we want to -feel- the experience, taking a shy 2 secondes shot of that restaurant car wasn't really cool. Check for example the videos of -Bald and Bankrupt- and how he deals about filming in public.
But anyway, nice video! :)

Last time I took an overnight train from Paris to Venice. It was boarded at Gare de Bercy, the train was late( I never knew train could be late, silly me)for more than six hours. We have no info about what time the train will arrive dare not to go out of the freezing station. A double room(back in 2002) was like 190Euro per person back then, It's nearly christmas the heat was turned up so high that it's suffocating. But I like night trains and enjoy the ride a lot other than the delay.

Greece had also a night train with number 504/505. It was running between Athens (capital) and Thessaloniki (Greece's second biggest city. The distance is 504 km and the journey was about 6 to 7 hours. Also in the end of the train was the car wagons so you could take your car with you. Unfortunately that train was cancelled in 2011 due to economical crisis. Today 504/505 has replaced by 600/601 which is a simple train.

-3: 30 regarding the car numbers: in Europe overnight trains often exchange through coaches to offer direct connections between multiple cities. Thus, the coach numbers have to be unique between all the corresponding trains.
Also the trains dont run in the same configuration every day; there might be groups of coaches that e. g. only run on weekends - those will often get a separate block of numbers as well.

This route was one of the many I traveled back in the early 90's, when it was a shared service operated by SNCF and FS. I seem to remember, on those bottom bunks, if you put your hand underneath the back and pull it forwards, and then push back - and the back rest drops back out of the way - to give more space on the lower bunk: ) Handy for you to know if you ever find yourself finding that train again!

Thanks for your videos I do find them very useful. I normally travel with a bicycle for cycle camping. When you do a train walk through and find some bicycle storage places would you include them in your video please. Its very useful for cyclists to understand what type of bike storage facilities are available before boarding. Thanks and keep up the good work, Tim cyclist from Ireland.

I took the train in 2017. Paid for the premium 2-bed sleeper with en suite toilet and shower, but got a regular one when boarding the train. Wasn't informed of the change. The train suffered a massive 6-hour delay. Emailed the customer service immediately after the trip and received a 44 Euro refund which I believe doesn't even make up the price difference.

Great video. Love overnight trains but sharing a room would be a massive turnoff for me against flying. But a tip; review your videos before posting but after editing. White subtitles on a white or light background - useless and you can't read the information which is a pity as they were comments you made that looked interesting but couldn't totally see

The Thello sleepers have become very expensive and for some reason the other Lake Garda Desenzano stop has been done away with, the rolling stock seems to have improved slightly from when they took the route over. I would like to try the cabins with loo and shower but not at the price they are asking.

Lovely Paris-Lyon terminal station, with a clock tower was the model for all other stations with clock tower in Europe or North America, for example here in Barcelona small Magoria station in Gran Via boulevard, Catalan Modernist style building today a civic center.

Took this train back in June 2019 on my trip to Europe with the travel company Explorica with some friends of mine in my history class, it was definitely cramped in our 6 berth couchette but it was a very nice ride; we only took the train to Milan though.

I being from North America privacy is a must, if you are travelling alone you have to sleep in a couchette with strangers. Unless you are in a room with your family or very close friends, you cannot get comfortable, example putting on your jammies, etc.

Couchettes seem to be similar to roomettes on Amtrak trains in the US, except on Amtrak you never share one with a stranger. Do any European trains have the equivalent of an Amtrak roomette (smaller than a bedroom, suitable for one person?

Unless you-re on a very tight schedule I personally don-t care about perhaps an hours delay but any longer then you should be compensated with either a partial refund or money off a further trip on the train

We stayed in the exact same type of couchette last night. Overall, our experience was pretty good. Despite the mattresses being rock hard and the sink room having no water, we liked it very much

One thing I love about the german train Operator DB is that they print the platform number already on the ticket. You can even see the right number in the internet one year before departure

5: 50 I remember as a small child of around 4 years I was so damn scared of the space between wagons. I would refuse to walk through it and my father had to carry me over.

I-m confused though, if you have the lower bunk but everyone uses the lower bunks to sit, does the mean you-d have to tell everyone to move because you wanna lay down?

The thing I love about these old coaches is the sound. They create a very special and very soporiphic feeling, and sound waaaay faster than they actually are!

It looks like they had gotten carriages from multiple train sets and combine them all in one. Not a single carriage is the same as another.
