welcome to this trip report bound to Zagreb (Croatia) with OBB Eurocity. I know the European train trip isn't in the right order but there are reasons. I'll explain why on IG - TRIP INFORMATION - Railway company: OBB Eurocity Train type: Bmz + Bpmz From: Wien Hauptbahnhof to Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor N° of train: EC1259 Duration: 6h53 Price: 59, 90
Date: 2024-01-09

once again a very nice video, i'd love to travel with the OBB one day. and i totally agree that the compartiment carriage, as much of a dying breed as it is, should be kept since its what it makes railway travel unique. i even think that high speed trains should have some in this format, but its unfourtunate how the railway industry prefers open coaches, similar to airline seating, theres not much privacy, its not even that amazing, it just makes the train travel experience less interesting (granted they are sometimes comfortable though. also motorrail trains could be useful in the future as they would do great to reduce congestion on the roads.
i'll keep watching the videos, they seem awesome.

This is a really nice video, it brings back memories of when I visited Vienna a few years ago.
Some small notes, though:
You didn't cross any of the Dinaric Alps. Zagreb is on the same side of them as Vienna.
You say that a small part of the journey is through Slovenia, but that section is longer than the part through Croatia.
You say that the Slovenian locomotives are different to Western European ones, but the one that pulled your train is made in Italy.
I hope you had a great time in Croatia. If you ever plan on coming again, I recommend taking the train between Rijeka and Zagreb for some nice views. I particularly like the rear view as the train leaves Rijeka.

OBB is fine-as long as nothing goes wrong. Their behavior is more like a charter company, good luck getting anything resolved.
Our sleeper room already had a family sleeping in it, they were occupying every bed.
The company agents simply said -It-s not our fault-. I asked them what they intended on doing with this situation, I mean-other than nothing? The 3 OBB kids (they all seemed about 20 years old) said there was nothing they could do. They said we could write the main office for a refund.
OBB can keep my money. That-s all they will ever get from me. This is a HORRIBLE national train company!

So memories. I remember my first time in Europe and in Eastern block (communists) countries. That was 1988.
At that time, you could have strong remarks if you wear shorts in the train stations or trains, even by very hot temperature. It was true in Paris, Vienna, Bratislava, Prague, Budapest or Dresden (at that time in East Germany) and even Franckfort. At that time, in Europe, wearing shorts for a 30 years old man was a no-no. It's clear now that Europe has lost its inhibition in this matter.

Beautiful station in Vienna and then you came to Zagreb and see that ugly old station. Oh how many times i traveled from that station and ask myself, when the hell will they demolish that and build new one, larger and better. Well, that wont happen hehe. We have one of worst railways system in Europe (in Croatia. It almost never go on time, and always is late to destination. We have plenty of such coaches but most of them are old, overally bad.

-8: 50 in this type of car the 4-seat groups have outlets underneath the small tables by the window, but unfortunately not all of the 2-seat rows have them (they were retrofitted in the early 2000s and I guess the construction of the car didn't allow to install sockets easily at every row. But usually it's no problem to ask the person in the row in front of you if you can use their socket and route the cable underneath the seat. :-)

So Vienna to Zagreb is about 270 mi. The train trip takes four and a half hours and let's say a half an hour at either end to get to your actual destination plus half an hour in the train station at Vienna So that would be four and a half plus an hour and a half you're talking 6 hours. Okay in the US I could drive that easily in 4 hours in the comfort of my own car with the stereo blasting. So what's the point?

why do we have to inspect closely every toilet in europe? these little videos would be nice except for the constant disgusting toilets. a toilet is a toilet and on european trains it can be assumed that 90% or more are basically clean and functional. the whole trip is ruined by looking at toilets and toilets and toilets. and on non-european trains looking at toilets is much much worse

The compartment is just like the earlier express train parts of the Deutsche Bundesbahn: All 6 seats can be pulled out and form 3 lying areas, each seat in the aisle has a small table that can be pulled out, the narrow mirrors above the headrests create endless reflections. In the past, every seat had a pull-out ashtray in the armrest. - Cheers, Heinz

5: 38 If you slide the seat down and on the in front, they join in the middle and becomes a bed. It's very useful in night trains, and if you are backpacking. BTW, you should mention these are Eurofima coaches. Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and other countries used to have these coaches. They are awesome.

Makes me sick every time I view what progress the European countries like Austria are making in promoting rail travel, while in Britain, where we invented the passenger railway, privatisation puts profits before provision of service on most of our now-fragmented and overcrowded railway.

Thanks for this very interesting video, I'll be taking the very same train on January 1st so this was really useful to watch. :-) However, being such a big railway fan, you should definitely think about getting a Mondaine watch, it would be a lovely addition to these vids. ;-)

I would actually like the video much more if you'd narrate your text yourself instead of using subs. The subs just detract from the video: .
Still, nice trip. I lived in Austria before moving back to germany. And the landscape is just amazing!

The folding out seats were standard in Germany in the 1980s. It was great. If you had a rail pass you didn't pay extra to book a couchette and if you were in luck you got to sleep the whole night through. A nights accomodation saved: )!

some captions are fine but some disappear all too quickly. this tends to add pressure for the viewers as they can't tell before hand which way it is going to turn out. cause many viewers to miss the visual content as well.

Can you do the leman express that goes into service on December 15th and I would like to know if you could explain in French what you say in your videos so pos
Otherwise your videos are fine

5: 39 I went in Vienna several years ago with two friends of mine and when we came back in Italy we just joined all our seats like that to sleep- we almost didn't remember to wake up- ahahah!

Simply Railways, does the nighttrain to Split wait at Zagreb if the Eurocity is delayed? Because im not sure if its possible to do this journey otherwise (Wien - Zagreb - Split)

The problem with the shops in a railway station is that they are more expensive just like in an airport! If you travel on a budget then you can-t afford much there! :)

Just love your train videos. I notice we caught a glimpse of you - I would very much appreciate knowing what type of gimbal you have attached to your cell phone?

This kind of compartement coaches and seats were common for German ICs and other long distance trains until everything was taken over by the ICEs. Very sad.
reply

I think OBB has most beutiful coaches.
I did hunted broken Bmz yesterday on freight train. At 2: 44 are you sure they are builded by Siemens?

reply

It's so great that you covered this route! I take it at least once a month to visit my family in Slovenia. I live ten minutes away from the station!
reply

The reservation says -ZA DAME- which means -FOR LADIES- altho I don't understand why there needs to be a special reservation for ladies

I took the First class on this train several days ago, Coach 412, and it was an absolut disaster! Such a bad 1. class with so small pitch!

I love train videos. It's amazing that you can get almost anywhere in Europe on the train, and a lot faster than on Amtrak.
reply

Hello from Croatia! Did you make a video from Zagreb to Belgrade? I'd love to see how you reviewed Croatian Railways: )
reply

I'm so curious why didn't they take the ES64U4 loco of Slovenske Zeleznice, which could ride all over these countries.
reply

These seats are so much more comfy than the one in railjet and if it-s empty that you can pull them out and make a bed -
reply

they used to run these coaches within austria too where they now use the railjets, I liked the old ones better
reply

That first class private coach is beautiful, along with the rear view that we got this time this was awesome.
reply

High speed train isn't above 300, but 200. You are following your country speed limits, and that's incorrect
