Howdy folks, Welcome to this new trip report onboard the Amtrak Sunset Limited service #1 between New Orleans, LA and Los Angeles, CA. A two day journey across the swamp of Louisiana and Texas desert! Oh and also. TRADITIONAL DINING SERVICE IS BACK! - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN DECEMBER 2021 Railroad company: Amtrak Train type: P42s and Superliner From: New Orleans to Los Angeles Time: Around 46 hours Price: Around 700$ with the split ticket
Date: 2024-01-09

I took this train on my recent multi-train trip, and I also had a downstairs roomette, which meant much less passing foot traffic and easier access to the bathrooms! Unfortunately, we were 3 hours late leaving New Orleans because the inbound train had been late, and it got worse from there: we arrived in L. A. at 12: 30, which is SEVEN hours late! And the dining car menu had been changed, with 3 new appetizers that all were inferior to the 3 on your menu (why, Amtrak. But the flatiron steak was excellent, and so was the salmon, though I would have preferred a slice of lemon and some tartar sauce. The carrot cake on the menu had been replaced by lemon cake, which was fine, but they ran out on the second day and substituted - carrot cake!

As airplane travel becomes even more unbearable (unruly passengers, squeezing ourselves into smaller and smaller seats, and remote work becoming more common, train travel in The United States could see a resurgence. I hope so! I love traveling by train. So relaxing and comfortable. There-s room to spread out and the view is more interesting than the view from an airplane. I am crossing my fingers that Americans will support a more robust train system in this country.

I have yet to find a sleeping car which has two beds at lower level. My wife and I love train travel, but we're in our 80s and neither of us can climb into an upper bunk. In all night trains we've seen we have to book two rooms, which means we can't be together. We have given up train travel since 2019 because if this issue. I'm sure many older folks would love two same level beds in one compartment. An actual queen-sized bed would be great for all couples!

The only thing I dislike about Amtrak's booking system is, you cannot specify a trip from one city through other cities, to a specific destination. For example, there is absolutely no way to research booking a train from Jacksonville, Florida to say, Chicago, Illinois. You have to book EACH LEG of the trip separately, otherwise the website will tell you that it -cannot find a train- for that trip. I know, I've tried.

Amazing video! Thanks for doing it for us to see. I'm pleasantly surprised in the portions served for each meal. I think the horn and stops at night would definitely wake me up. I did that on the Via Rail Vancouver to Banff. Or maybe it was the movement. I'm a light sleeper.
I live in Houston and have always wondered about training to New Orleans. I hate the drive and flying is such a hassle now.

Enjoyed the video. Huey P. Long had a VERY checkered past in Louisiana to say the least. The people of the state seem to never make a even half-way decent choice in electing politicians thru out the entire history of the state, take for example Edwin Edwards who was well known for being corrupt, but the people voted him Governor four, yes four times and they got what they deserved later.

The Huey P. Long Bridge - if only Southern Pacific and Santa Fe had built a bridge just like that across the San Francisco Bay so that the Capitol Corridor, Coast Starlight, California Zephyr and San Joaquin trains could go directly to SF and have a big -SF Union Station-, which would be a lot more convenient for SF-bound travelers

Looking at the scenery which is great, I still noticed vehicles passing the train. It is a shame SlamtraK can't get the railroads to upgrade the track to allow faster speeds. Again it is why Europe is so far ahead of us. Great video again, really enjoyed. This is my third viewing of it and I see new things with each viewing!

now that Biden is President AMTRAK has actual help now, so they are cleaning up the train interiors with new ones and getting new cars. I just wish the freight companies would pay for rail upkeep so that the ride was less violent. Things are cleaning up and getting better for Amtrak. at least for the next 3 years.

I-ll be taking this trip from NOLA to El Paso with an overnight in EP, TX Christmas night this year combined with a return trip back to NOLA the following day thus completing my first solo train trip. 58 plus hours of pure fun-possibly I-ll report back sometime late December 2022

Awesome video! And yet another Sunset Limited video that fails to mention or show the short stop in my town Benson, Arizona. My house on a ridge overlooks the tracks where I watch both the Sunset Limited #1 and #2 go by, and endless UP trains daily. -

just moved to the US and didn't event know they had passenger trains in that part of the country (Arizona/Texas! When you got to Houston, did you have to re-check your baggage since you had different reservations? Or can they keep em all the way to LA?
reply

A coach seat might be the cheapest way to go cross country, but that doesn't mean that you'll get to your destination clean and non-smelly since you have no access to any showers. You might want to think about that when you are reporting this trip.

All due respect to the video. Very nice but I gotta say, hanging out the door window is not only dangerous, it-s definitively not allowed and in most cases enough to have the offender removed from the train at the next stop- FYI

Roomette 11 did you wake up to the train stopped at a street intersection with people looking in your windows, I was on the Capital limited sleeping with the outside curtains open, woke up to 4 people looking in the window.

One -excellent- item that happens in -Simply Railway' that I have never seen on any other video 'system' of either trains or planes, is the 2nd person-supplied video of the train the video is about, very neat', thanks. JMS

I've done this route 3 times. Its my favorite cross country route. You have to stay overnight in New Orleans because Sunset Limited departs 3 times a week in each direction.
Glad traditional dining is back!

I'll be taking this very train in September, when more daylight should mean more scenery. I'm glad the traditional dining car service is back. I just wish the sleeping car wasn't directly behind the engine! Thank you.

I think that most people who travel have no need for an electric plug outlet I found this gadget on amazon a battery charger that pluuuugs into a usb port This gadget has 4 USB ports So it just what I need

The cousin of Huey P. Long bridge is the Stanton S-curve bridge in Stanton city, Pensylvania. They both have the same layout but the Stanton S-curve bridge has no Highway running parallel with it.

Just wondering if anyone has done a round trip starting in N. O? Looks like the train sits most of the day in L. A, do you have to disembark or allowed to stay onboard?
reply

In my books when even I take this train if your 40 minutes delayed that-s good in my books. Because I was stuck In El Paso for almost 3 hole hours! Thanks UP!
reply

Really enjoy the tours through the country with you. You are one of the few that focus on the landscape and provide information on what we are seeing.
reply

I am going to ask a weird question. The windows were gross when they started. Did you clean them for your video? They look so much better: )
reply

Love your videos. Years ago use to take Amtrak from Battle Creek Michigan to Toronto Canada. Cross over into Canada from Port Huron. -
reply

So, let me get this straight-When the train arrives in Los Angeles at 5: 30 am, everyone has to get off then? Wow, that-s early!
reply

This would be awesome if there was commentary. I like to watch while doing crafts and can-t sit and read the comments. Bummer
reply

I'm an hour out of N. O. and I keep saying I'm going to ride that train there one day just for the H. P. Long bridge part.
reply

I hate Coach Class. No way I'll take it for more than a short excursion or commute. Like 2 hours each way, at most.
reply

Just finished watching this great video again! I will be travelling on it in July of 3 months! I can't wait! :): ): )
reply

Thank you for a great video, it's refreshing to see a rail trip with the focus on the journey not the vlogger.
reply

So I'm think I'm about doing this. so what if I wanted to stay in California for a few days will the train come back
reply

Can someone suggest a link to a good video about Amtrak? I'd like to learn what it's like.
reply

I really enjoyed no talking and just taking in the sights and reading the captions. Thanks much.
reply

I wouldn't wanna do it over multiple nights, but nobody does coach better than Amtrak does coach!
